Then

"Alright, you're doing good Ronnie. One more push and that should do it!" the nurse who was holding my hand said. I gritted my teeth and pushed as hard as I could and suddenly the pain was gone. I heard the most beautiful cry ever. My world felt like it stopped for a minute.

"You did it Ronnie!" the nurse said while rubbing my back. The tears flowed down my face instantly. "Oh honey, don't cry," she said which made me cry harder. A little pink bundle was placed in my arms. She was so tiny but everything about her was perfect.

I didn't even notice anyone else in the room anymore. My eyes were focused on the baby in my arms. "Charlie," I whispered before placing a soft kiss on her forehead. I knew from this moment that my world was about to turn completely upside down.

~~

Now

"Can you watch Charlie for me?" I asked Brittany over the phone while I looked in the mirror one last time. "I thought you were off today? Why do you need me to watch her?" Brittany asked, I sighed, "I am off. I just have to do something," I said.

"You got a hot date I don't know about?" she asked. I put on my shoes and ushered Charlie out the door. "No, I don't have a date. I'm just going to see a certain someone," I said as I looked in the rearview mirror at Charlie who seemed like she didn't care where we were going.

"Oh, I know who you're going to see. It's about time you pulled your head out of your ass," Brittany said. I rolled my eyes. "Whatever I'm pulling into your driveway. I'm hanging up," I said while putting the car in park. I got out and grabbed Charlie and quickly helped her to the front door where Brittany was already waiting.

"Are you sure you're ready for this?" she asked as Charlie gave me a hug before running off to play with her cousins. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. "I don't know. I think so," I said. Brittany smiled softly. "Just be honest, don't be a bitch," she said,

I rolled my eyes and waved bye as I made my way back to my car. The ride to Jeffrey's was quiet. It left me alone with my thoughts. I didn't know how to feel about all of it. I was pulling down the long gravel drive of Jeffrey's farm quicker than what I was wanting too.

I shut off the car and slowly got out. I felt my car keys trembling in my hands. I quickly tucked my hands in my pockets and made my way up the small set of stairs to his front door. My hands were sweating. What was I going to say to him? The nerves started to overtake my body.

My hand got a mind of it's own and knocked on the door. "Shit," I mumbled while tucking my hand back in my pocket. I turned my back to the door and looked out over the property. I instantly loved how quiet and private it was. I turned my head up to the sky as a warm breeze blew through the air.

The door squeaking open interrupted my thoughts. I didn't dare turn around just yet. "Ronnie?" Jeff's voice asked quietly. I breathed out a sigh before slowly turning around. His eyes were full of confusion. "Hi," I whispered softly. I shifted from side to side nervously.

"What are you doing here?" he asked me. I ran my hand through my hair. "I was, uh, hoping we could talk," I said slowly. He crossed his arms lightly over his chest. "You could've called," he said. I bit my lip. "I know, I was going too, but I figured I would get scared and not show up last minute. I didn't want you mad at me," I said looking at my feet.

Jeff sighed and uncrossed his arms. "Let me grab some shoes," he said before making his way into the house. I stood awkwardly on the front porch. It didn't take long for him to join me. I looked him up and down to see he was clad in a hoodie, sweatpants, and muddy work boots.

I cocked an eyebrow at his choice of footwear. "With all these animals you never know what you'll step in. So, watch out," he said while leading the way down the stairs. I followed close behind not sure where we were headed. "So what made you decide to buy this farm?" I asked him out of curiosity and trying to break the awkward silence between us.

Jeffrey barely glanced at me out of the corner of his eye. "Once people started realizing who I was I wanted privacy. I figured buying 65 acres would do just that," he said. I nodded not really knowing what to say. Finally, we came to a huge clearing with a fence.

Jeffrey hopped up on the fence and tucked his hands in the front pocket of his hoodie. I stood there awkwardly. "You can sit. I won't bite," he said softly. I slowly made my way to the fence and hopped up beside him. "So talk," he said not even bothering to look over at me.

I sighed and ran a hand through my hair feeling really nervous all of the sudden. After what felt like forever I finally spoke. "I'm sorry," came the whisper. I looked over at Jeff to see what he was thinking. By the expression on his face I couldn't tell exactly what was going through his mind.

The laugh that erupted from his chest confused me even more. "What's so funny?"  I asked. Jeffrey jumped down form the fence still laughing. "We haven't seen or spoke to each other in five years and all you have to say is I'm sorry?" he asked me. I felt my head lower as I now felt embarrassed.

"What else do you want me to say?" I asked him. He turned to face me. The look on his face was not friendly. Jeff ran his hand through his hair. "You're kidding me right? How about a little more than I'm sorry? How about some sort of explanation!" he said.

Jeffrey turned his back to me and I sighed. "Where do you want me to start? I asked him not really knowing where to begin. Jeffrey laughed a sarcastic laugh. "How about from the time you decided that it was a fucking fantastic idea to up and leave me with no explanation except for a measly letter!"  he said throwing his hands in the air.

"I don't want to argue. I just want to talk," I said not wanting a screaming match. Jeffery tucked his hands in his pockets. "Then talk, Veronica. For Christ's sake, what happened?" he asked, his voice becoming quieter at the end. It hurt to hear my full name.

I had only known of one other time he had called me that and that was years ago when we had first met. I felt myself suck in a shaky sigh. "I don't know why I did it," I said. Jeffrey laughed again. "Bullshit, try again," he said. I tugged on the ends of my hair.

"Fine! You know what? I couldn't stand you being away. I hated coming home every day to an empty house. I hated you not greeting me as I walked through the door. I hated not hearing your laugh over something stupid on the T.V. I hated going to bed every night, alone, without your arms around me, to hold me and to protect me!"

Now I had jumped off of the fence at this point and was facing Jeffrey's back. He refused to turn around. I wanted to reach out and touch his back gently, but everything in my body was fighting me. "I didn't want to leave you. Please believe me. I just hated being alone," I said.

Jeffrey scoffed. "And leaving me made you less lonely?" he asked me. I felt a frown forming. "It didn't. I hated every minute of it. I wanted to come back but the thought of staying home while you went off on new adventures sucked," I said. "You could've went with me!" he said.

"You never offered!" I said. He had yet to turn around. "I shouldn't have had to offer. You were my girlfriend. You could've just said so!" he said in a low growl. I felt my frown deepening. I took a timid step forward and grabbed Jeffrey's arm gently.

"Jeff I-," but I was cut off by Jeffrey swinging around and shaking my hand off. "I loved you! Don't you get that! You threw away a five year relationship like it meant absolutely nothing to you!" he said. His voice was angry, but his eyes told a different story. Tears were slowly forming.

"I don't know what to say," I whispered. Jeffrey cleared his throat and shook his head. "You don't have to say anything, Ronnie. It's clear that feelings weren't the same," I stood there helpless and frozen. How dare he question my feelings for him. Jeffrey shook his head again and waved me off.

"Just get out of here, Ronnie. Get out of here and don't bother coming back," he said before turning his back to me and looking out over the pasture. My feet carried me quickly. I didn't want to be there a minute longer. Shaking off the feeling that Jeffrey was watching me, I promised I wouldn't let a tear fall until I got to the car.

Well that hurt. It hurt a lot.

Oh how the tables have turned. So do you think Jeffrey was being too harsh? Or do you think he was in the right? Do you think Ronnie's excuses for leaving were good enough?
