CHAPTER 9 - THE WAR OF DEATH AND BLOOD

"She's coming with a storm of dragoncats." Turbulence whispered.

They hid behind a hill, watching Pendant's every move. Behind her, dragoncats flew in a formation, following their glorious leader. "We'd better warn the next wave. For now, send in the first." Breeze said. Turbulence nodded.

"Wait– if... if we win this fight, I would like you to be one of my generals." Breeze gently nudged her friend. Turbulence's eyes brimmed with happiness.

"I'd be honoured. But let's save sappy stuff for later." Turbulence grinned. With a battle yowl, she led the first patrol of dragoncats to battle Pendant. Immediately, some of Pendant's army tore away and clashed with the first wave.

All together, Breeze had managed seven waves, the last the biggest. Hopefully it will be able to win the war.

As dragoncats fought, large, thick vines erupted from the ground, strangling some of the first wave. Hissing, Breeze ran to find Vine. He had agreed to join, because apparently, he had sent a spy scout to the Sky Kingdom.

"Send in the second wave." Breeze ordered. He nodded. The second wave consisted of mainly Earth Elements, which will be able to hold the vines back, or even better, turn them against the summoner. The second wave flew into battle behind General Daisy, yowls of anger, rage and pain exploding around.

The vines double back, starting to strangle Pendant's army. In the heart of the battle, Breeze spied Pendant, huge and muscular, killing every dragoncat in her path. Her hazel eyes burned with rage as she whacked dragoncats out of the sky. Breeze's army was falling apart.

"Third wave!" Breeze yelled as loud as she could. General Stingray led her wave smashing into battle.

"Send reinforcements!" Pendant's angry cry could be heard everywhere. Three soldiers tore apart from the rest, winging back to the Royal Palace. The fourth wave was led by Lord Vine himself. He paced to and fro, his tail lashing.

"I'm going." he told Breeze. She nodded.

"Fourth wave! Attack!" The three soldiers who had been ordered to bring reinforcements were back in a flash, leading another army of dragoncats. Breeze flew close to the three soldiers, staying out of sight.

"That's the rest of Her Wondrous Majesty's army."

Breeze heard one whisper. A wide smile spread across her face. "We're going to win this." she hissed, flying back to her army. "The rest of the waves!" she yowled. "Attack full speed ahead!"

As dragoncats flew into battle, Pendant hissed with fury. Sky Elements bombed down claws and teeth upon her and Earth Elements sent hurricanes of vines. "She's mine!" Breeze snarled. As she wrapped her claws around Pendant's neck, the queen screamed with rage and wriggled out of Breeze's grasp.

"I knew you were trouble!" she hissed, "I wanted to kill you the moment you were born! I knew you were going to be a threat! I knew you were going to challenge upon my throne! Upon my reign!" She slashed out with a claw at Breeze's muzzle, catching her off-guard. "You tried to kill me!" Breeze spat.

"You made my mother hide my identity! That's why I only knew Elder Moon for about a day before she died!" Breeze hissed.

"Her death's not exactly your fault, but this is for my mother!"

Breeze lunged at Pendant. Pendant dodged neatly to the side but Breeze predicted her move and felt her claws dig into warm flesh. Sticky blood began to pour out of Pendant's throat, and suddenly her fury turned into fear as her wings stopped holding her up, and she plummeted to the ground.

Breeze knew that even though Pendant was ruthless and mean, she didn't deserve her body crashing to the ground to be picked clean by scavengers.

"Pendant's dead!" Breeze yelled before chasing after Pendant's lifeless body.

"Her Wondrous Majesty's dead!" the echo shrieked.

"Retreat!" Breeze saw Jabez flick his armoured tail in rage, guilt and annoyance. The two sides separated, clear that Pendant's team couldn't have won even if she'd survived. The remainder of Breeze's army was cut down to about half the original amount.

Bodies of all Elements and soldiers littered the ground.

Angling her wings so that Breeze could catch Pendant, she swooped down and clutched the queen's lifeless body in her claws. Flying down to the ground below the battlegrounds, Breeze laid Pendant down.

She surveyed the scene, her heart pounding as she searched for Ember and Turbulence's pelt. Relief washed over her as she realised that they weren't among the dead dragoncats, but her relief was short-lived.

General Cloud lay bleeding from several wounds. He wasn't breathing. He wasn't alive.
