Fireworks

I sighed and slumped myself onto the bench. The sky looked like a painting, the bluish black of the night accented by the beautiful full moon. The stars were dim, almost invisible - in that way, I guess we could relate.

The pier was illuminated by the bright lights of the carnival. The huge Ferris wheel shone its lights onto the sea, rippling waves eating up the beauty of the lights, then crashing down and allowing them to shine once again. But, every time, they seemed to get weaker...

Pursing my lips to hold back tears, I observed all of the lovesick couples gathered around. Most were passionately holding hands, staring into each other's eyes with a look that could melt your insides. But my insides didn't melt. Instead, I was filled was a new kind of sorrow that I'd never felt before.

Why would I come here alone at night? Honestly, I had no idea. It was too late to back out now, anyway, because I could see them prepping the fireworks. Folding my arms, I leaned back, ready for the show to begin.

Suddenly, my gaze fell upon the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. Long, fawn-brown hair curled down her back and mocha-brown eyes stared at someone I had never seen before. My mouth instantly dried and I could feel my face pale.

That's when it hit me. I could see the lust in her eyes as she wrapped her arms around the man's neck, pulling him into a kiss. It looked just like a scene from a rom-com. Fireworks exploded in the distance, and my hands balled into fists, tears glazing in my eyes.

She was still the most beautiful girl I had ever laid eyes on. She was completely stunning. She used to be mine, and I don't know why it pains me so much to see her with another man. However, I did spot something that I had never had the privilege of seeing on her.

She was sporting a perfect smile. For some reason, that made me smile, too. It was at that moment that I realised that I didn't need her to be satisfied. I just needed her to be happy without me.

And she looked happier.

Annika looked happier.
