Ch.12 Promises

Meiko: You're being granted off campus permission for two hours.

Shingo: Really? What for?

Meiko: You've done a good job. Enjoy yourself.

........

Hachime: You guys ready?!

Softball Player: Yeah we're good to go!

Hachime nodded and began lightly hitting the softballs towards the basemen as they efficiently scooped up the balls and threw them to their respective places. After a couple more rounds of practice, Hachime ordered a water break. Hana approached the boy as he intensely stared at a clipboard.

Hana: Hey Hachime, what're you doing?

Hachime: Oh, I'm helping the girls with their softball practice. The coach asked if I could teach them for today. I'm not necessarily professional, but the girls insisted saying that they wanted an outside opinion on their playing style.

Hana: Oh my, you've become quite popular.

Hachime: Haha! Please, you flatter me. What were you up to?

Hana: Just taking a walk around. I have the day off from U.S.C duties. How are you adjusting to school life here?

Hachime: I'm doing okay. It took a day or so to remember everything but I think I got it down now. Hey, have you ever played Softball or Baseball?

Hana: Nope. Haven't a clue on how it's played.

Hachime: Really? How about I teach you? That way, if you come to my games, you'll know what's going on!

Hana: You just want me to get into baseball huh?

Hachime: Nothing wrong with that, right?

Hana: Nope. I'm down to learn it.

Hachime: Awesome! I'll teach you after practice.

Hana sat on the bleachers as Hachime talked with the softball team before running through more drills.

Hachime: That's all I can teach you all. I hope it helped.

Softball Coach: I'm sure it did. Make sure you all thank Mr. Ryouta for taking time out of his day to practice with you.

The Softball team bowed and thanked Hachime for the time as everyone began to pack up their things. Hana hopped off the bleachers and approached Hachime who was taking a sip from his water bottle.

Hachime: So, after watching the practice, what do you think?

Hana: It looks fun.

Hachime:  Okay, let's start by just playing catch.

Hachime handed Hana a baseball glove. After a little trouble, she put it on and Hachime put his on. Hachime grabbed a baseball and threw it into his glove the two stood across from each other about five yards apart.

Hachime: Okay, the rules are pretty simple. There are three bases and home plate. You score a point by running and touching all three bases and reaching home plate after hitting the ball with a bat. You're out if you get tagged with the ball, the player gets the ball and tags first base before you can reach it, or if you can't reach the next base and you can't go back to the previous base because of a teammate. As long as you're on a base, you can't be tagged out if you're on a base but that depends on the situation. After three outs the teams switch and the ones guarding the bases are gonna be batting. Simple enough right?

Hana: I think I got the jist of it.

Hachime: Of course there's more to it but that's the basic knowledge of the rules. But we're gonna just throw the baseball back and forth. Now my old coach made me picture a windshield wiper when catching the ball. You always wanna try and catch the ball with your glove. Anyways, you ready?

Hana: Yeah!

Hachime: Okay!

Hachime lobbed a ball towards Hana who raised her glove and awkwardly caught it. Hana threw the ball watching Hachime catch the ball casually and tossing it back to her. This repetitive process continued with Hana getting a better feel for on how to catch the ball.

Hana: This is oddly relaxing.

Hachime: Yeah, it clears my mind but unfortunately doing it yourself is not as good as doing it with someone.

Hana: I see....

The two continued playing catch until they decided it late enough to head back.

...........

Mari sat on Y/N's bed to which he sat down next to her.

Mari: How long have you known?

Y/N: Not long. At first, it was more just suspicion. It grew when I took Meiko out for lunch when she was trailing me. Meiko has changed a lot since I last saw her. Never thought she'd be more confident in her body. I was not sure if I should ask you if you remembered me because of your new ideal.

Mari: What do you mean?

Y/N: Come on, Mari. It's obvious that you have a extreme distaste for men.

Mari:........

Y/N: You probably think all men are trash huh?

Mari:........

Y/N: Well, what brought about this change?

Mari stared at the floor. Y/N waited patiently for her answer as he stared at the posters on his wall.

Mari: You were the reason.

Y/N: Huh? How's that work?

Mari: They're were two men I held in high regard. You and my father. You left us so it was just my father. Then I find out, my father is just a giant pervert for a woman's rear. I tried to see if I could find someone like you but I couldn't. So, I decided to believe that all men are trash. But you......you're different. You may be quiet and blunt but...I can't help but find myself accepting of you. I wasn't sure it was you when I first saw you. Even after I read your file, I needed to know if it was still you. The same one that I met back in elementary and middle school. So that's when I did all those indecent acts on you. I needed to see if you could be easily swayed. You will probably be the only boy I can ever accept.

Y/N: You're lucky. People change. But it seems that I haven't all that much.

Mari: Yes. For that, I'm glad. I know my reason is childish but it's how I feel. And that's why.......

Mari trailed off before looking at Y/N.

Mari: I'm having you resign from your position in the U.S.C.

Y/N: I see.....well it was a....interesting experience to say the least.

Mari: That is all i'd like to talk about for now. If you ever need help with your studies, Meiko and I would be happy to tutor you. And also, feel free to join us for tea time. Hana has been furously working on a new brew from what I've heard.

Mari stood up and approached the door.

Y/N: Mari.

Mari: Yes?

Y/N: I want to not believe that you're not planning something for the boys....but, I'll just say this, don't do anything reckless.

Mari smiled at the boy.

Mari: Nothing is happening. I assure you.

Mari left the room leaving Y/N by himself as he stared out his dorm window glancing at the prison.

Y/N: Stay strong guys.
