Part 5

It was strange to live among giants. Some of them were kind, but those that were not, simply kept to their business. The fire spitting competition began, but Fabinacco couldn't team up with Sephora or Nefataria, so he had decided to go there, but only as a spectator.

Many new participants were there, including Dathos, Salatath's son. The giants participating were signing up. This year prizes included not only the medal and the trophy, but also one hundred pounds of silver, so that was sweet. From all of the dragons, Dathos was the favorite one.

Spectators all had their bets on him. Fabinacco came by, said hello and brought both dragons with him. There were wooden bleachers for the spectators to sit down and watch. It was obvious that the two dragons wouldn't be able to sit on the top bleachers, so Fabinacco decided to sit on the ground level. Despite Sephora and Nefataria's rejection from the dragon community, the giant community were glad to see them there.

Some giants thought that the dragons were being ridiculous, others thought that they didn't really understand the rejection and other giants didn't really know or care much about the drama.

As soon as all of the giants signed in with the names of their partners, they all started to be placed. The idea was to chop up the most wood possible for the dragons to spit fire on it. There were various things to consider, first how much wood had been consumed, which burned faster and how cool the dragon looked when they spit their fire.

Before the competition, the teams had to present themselves briefly. Sometimes, if the teams were creative, they would get extra points, like if they sang something or if the dragon did some tricks or if they had made some artistic thing for example. One team came up with matching clothes. Another one, the dragon flew in circles. Some teams just walked in, but they didn't really do anything and then Dathos with Horduck sang briefly and they got like 2 points extra for that.

The crowds obviously loved the show. Nefataria and Sephora didn't really care. When they came in, the dragons had totally ignored them as if they didn't even exist. They had come here in courtesy to keep Fabinacco company, but they didn't really care about these competitions. After the introductions, the rules were read aloud, even though everyone knew the rules by heart, but this was just part of the whole thing. Then there would be a brief song, mostly about dragons and giants. After that, they actually mentioned and commemorated both Fabinacco and Sephora's participation during the years of the competition. There were thanks and Fabinacco and Sephora were told to come up and say something briefly.

The dragon community treated this as indifferent and Sephora hesitated, but she decided to speak briefly, talk about her accomplishments and say thanks to the organizers of the competition.

"May the competition begin!" Said the announcer who was a giant. The sand timer was placed and the competition began. The giants had to hack trees and chop off wood and leave it on the designated spot. They had to chop as much wood as possible before their time ended. There were seven rounds and for the first round, the timer was turned six times. Then after the timer was turned seven times, the giants had to stop what they were doing and it was time for the dragons to spit their fire. On the first round, the dragons were very near the wood, but as the competition continued, the dragons had to back up and on the sixth round, the dragons left had to fly on midair and burn the wood which was no easy task.

These competitions lasted for three days. Mostly because they didn't want the giants or the dragons to wear out. They also took long breaks to cool down and the last three rounds were done at night, so the first day they would do two rounds. There would be breaks and then there was a betting period, an evaluation period and a purchase of merchandise period. Then, on the third day, to make it more exciting, they did the competition during the night.

The first two days went well and many dragons and giants had been eliminated. Most participants took the elimination process well, some didn't. Some protested, some said that the competition was bought, that they were cheated on or that they should have a second chance. On some occasions the participants could have a second chance, but that was unusual and usually done when there was doubt about the evaluating process.

Dragons and giants were a part of the judges, although the public's opinion was also taken into consideration, so after each team played, there would be a vote. If you liked the performance, you raised your hand, if you didn't, then you didn't raise it. The hands were counted and taken into consideration, but they did not determine an elimination.

After the first round, they took a long break. The giants drank water and rested their arms. The dragons stretched their jaws and took deep breaths. All of this took time which was why the competition lasted so long. Then, after the competition there was lunch, bets and purchases of items that had to do with the competition.

It was on the last round, when it was dark that something that shouldn't have happened, occurred.

Dathos was the favorite one and in his last participation, he spit fire, but there was a problem. Horduck, the giant who was Dathos' teammate had chopped off wood from the wrong type of tree, a Cidiatric tree. Now the problem with the Cidiatric tree was that there was a dry liquid inside of them that made the tree extremely flammable. This liquid melted and spreaded, making it very dangerous to ignite. Cidiatric trees weren't allowed to be used in the competition, but for unknown reasons Horduck chopped off, not one, but three of these trees and then he mixed them with regular ones. So when Dathos spit on the pile, it created a disaster. The liquid melted like lava and it burned the entire area.

The giants and the dragons panicked. The fire was spreading and losing control. It was heading straight to the village of the giants. Women screamed and ran and some giants headed for the Weeping River, but it was dangerous for them to seek water there. This had happened while Nefataria had decided to stay home. She didn't want anything to do with the competition and she had been there the first day, but she didn't want to return, so she was sleeping profoundly. She was snoring and she didn't even hear the screams. It wasn't until her mother flew to where she was and screamed right at her ears that she finally woke up.

"Nefataria, the village is burning. We must leave," Sephora said. Nefataria yawned and felt lost, but once she was up, she decided to see the fire.

"I can stop it," Nefataria said.

"It's too big. We have to go," Sephora said, but Nefataria ignored her mother and she flew into the sky and began to spit water onto the fire. The water fell on the fire like a huge waterfall. It was impressive to see Nefataria fighting this fire, but it was a huge fire indeed.

Nefataria had to go to the Weeping River to drink some water.

"No!" Sephora screamed. She didn't want to lose her daughter to the River.

"I have no choice," Nefataria said and she drank the water. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't amazing either. Nefataria was so busy with duty that when the spirits of the water tried to spread their sadness onto her, she didn't even feel it. She was too preoccupied with the fire. Nefataria flew around and spit the waterfalls and the fire was dying out. She spit wherever she could and as fast as she could, but the smoke provoked her to cough and so she had to fly up and down to fight this fire.

After what seemed a long time, Nefataria had put out the fire which was both spreading into the giant and the dragon community. She had saved everyone. She flew next to her mother and her mother attended her cough. The next day Nefataria woke up as if nothing had happened, but to her surprise everyone, both giants and dragons were cheering at her and screaming her name. Nefataria became famous and the dragon community were both apologetic and grateful to Nefataria. No other dragon in the history of Wastilia had ever been born with this special gift and as the years became decades and the decades became centuries, Nefataria became a legend in and of herself. For years her story was repeated over and over again both by the dragons and the giants of the lands. There were songs and poems of her and for years many female dragons and even some female giants were named after her.
