Part 3
The first month was very difficult to adapt. Sephora and Nefataria were not used to hunting in the forest. The giants usually provided meals for the dragons, so now they had to do it for themselves. Lamashi taught them how to hunt and fish and for that first month, he helped them out although not all of the time because he needed them to learn on their own. There were days when both dragons didn't eat and they felt the hardship of their bellies grumble. Lamashi didn't really focus much on discovering Nefataria's uniqueness. He simply wanted to observe her and he noticed many things. She was kind and generous, but she was also a bit impulsive. She wasn't scared though, she was actually brave and her connection with her mother was deep. Her mother was kind like her, but she was a bit anxious. She meant no harm for her daughter. She wanted her daughter to do and be well, but sometimes her own anxiety made her daughter anxious. So, for the next few months Lamashi would have to teach both of them how to be calm.
Once they practiced calmness, Nefataria would be more herself and he would be able to discover he uniqueness. After the month, both dragons mastered hunting and after four months, they began to behave calmly. When this happened both dragons expressed themselves more freely and they seemed a lot more happier. One night while Nefataria was asleep, Sephora and Lamashi spoke in front of a fire camp.
"I must thank you, for teaching us all of these things. Is this why you are far away from our community? Because of the calmness?" Sephora asked.
"The community is not bad per-se, but I cannot focus on myself if I live with them. I cannot be me due to their demands. When I lived among them, I could not fit in. I tried to have a family, but the female dragons would not accept me. They would only accept a child and so I served as such," Lamashi said.
"But... you are a such a handsome dragon," Sephora said and Lamashi couldn't help, but giggle deeply.
"Maybe. But I was too strange. Like Nefataria, I thought something was wrong with me, so I left into the forest to live by myself. It was here when I discovered that I was special and unique. I was different from the community. The place brought me the peace and the joy the community did not offer to me, so I stayed. I learned that it was okay to be me and I've lived her by myself for many years. However, it's been good to have some company. Thank you," Lamashi said. Sephora laid in front of the fire next to Lamashi and then she fell asleep. Lamashi covered Sephora with leaves and he left her to go to his sleeping area. Lamashi didn't sleep in a hole like the rest of the dragons. He slept in a cave. The night was peaceful, but Sephora moved her tail. It was just by impulse, but one of the leaves caught fire. The fire extended and when Sephora felt the flames on her scales, she wailed in pain. She had fallen asleep and hadn't realized that half her tail had caught fire. The fire was growing and her scream woke up both Lamashi and her daughter. Nefataria jerked and woke up. She immediately flew to her mother to try to help her. Lamashi didn't know what to do. Desperate, Nefataria decided to blow on her mother's tail and then suddenly, something amazing happened. Nefataria spit out water. It was an amazing amount, enough to put out the fire on her mother's tail.
"Water?" Lamashi said and his jaw dropped. Sephora didn't care. She was so happy to have been saved by the scorching fire that she hugged her daughter with her wings.
"She spits water! That is her gift," Lamashi said. Sephora was happy, but Nefataria wasn't so happy.
"We can go home now," Sephora said, but Nefataria didn't want to return.
"You must go back. Your gift will be needed," Lamashi said. So, the following day with a heavy heart, both female dragons, Sephora and Nefataria said their goodbyes to Lamashi.
"Remember what you have learned," Lamashi said. Both dragons made a nod.
"Won't you come with us? You can visit the community and teach others too," Nefataria said, but Lamashi shook his head.
"No, I cannot. This is my home. I won't go back," Lamashi said. They hugged the white dragon before they were gone. Sephora and Nefataria flew back to the community, but everything was different. The community hadn't changed, but Sephora and Nefataria had certainly changed. Both the dragons and the giants greeted them back and made a last minute homecoming celebration. They asked many things, how they were, what happened and how was Lamashi like.
"Is it true that he's crazy?" A red-scaled younger dragon asked.
"Dathos, don't say that," his father, Salatath, the leader of the community said.
"No. He's very wise," Sephora said.
"So, can Nefataria spit fire now?" Dathos asked. Sephora and Nefataria were now on the spotlight.
"Not exactly, but we can talk about it tomorrow," Sephora said.
"So, wait a minute, you went all that way for nothing?" Dathos asked.
"Dathos! My apologies," his father, Salatath said.
"It's okay. No Dathos, we didn't go all that way for nothing. Goodnight," Sephora said and her daughter followed along.
"Mom, why didn't you just tell him?" Nefataria asked her.
"Because I'm tired and I want to sleep. Lamashi was right. The community has high expectations and it's exhausting. I already want to go back to the forest," Sephora confessed.
"Then, why don't we? I want to go back too," Nefataria said.
"We can't. Lamashi said that your gift would be needed here. Tomorrow we will tell them and you will show them your gift," Sephora said.
"Do you think they'll accept me?" Nefataria said. Sephora gave her a smirk.
"I don't know and honestly, I don't care. Whatever happens, I want you to know that I love you and that I love your gift," her mother told her. Nefataria smiled.
