Part 1
Wastilia covered all the lands of men, wizards, fairies and many other magical and magnificent creatures. Most of these lands were surrounded by the Diamerald Ocean with rivers like The Espanto, The Bikemor river and The Weeping River which is the river that is near the Bridge of Boserton, the place where this story sets.
In the lands of Wastilia, there were many legends about wizards and kings who were mighty and fearless, but this isn't a story about the wizards of Malpestra or the kings of Falsebor nor is it the story about the Elves in Elka Lika or the Fairies in Acalixtor.
This is the story about a dragon who lived in the forest of Boserton, where now gnomes live. However, this story happened a very, very long time ago when giants lived there.
Before the wizards of Malpestra had conquered the dragons and turned them into their pets, dragons used to live wild and free next to the giants of those lands. The giants built houses in giant shaped trees. The houses only had a bed to sleep in because the space there was too small for them to have other rooms, so they created communal spaces where they ate and did other activities. Some of these customs were later adapted by the gnomes and it may not be a coincidence, that werewolves and gnomes live together as well, but this too is for another story.
Unless it was a rainy day, the giants pretty much lived with the dragons. They played with them and when they wanted to be entertained, they chopped tons of wood for the dragons to burn. This was their entertainment and for this they even held competitions every year as to which dragon burned the most wood. They formed teams because the giants had to chop tons of wood and make sure that they were placed in their designated place to avoid a forest fire. The winning team would win a great big trophy and a medal. The medal was for the dragon and the trophy for the giant.
Sephora had won the competition for years. She was the most admired dragon of all dragons, but that one specific year, the year of the Apple Tree, Sephora could not participate because she had put an egg. It was strange for a dragon to put lay one single egg because dragons used to lay from four to at least two eggs, but Sephora didn't mind.
Sephora could no longer participate in the competitions because she had to be a mother now according to the laws of the dragons, but there were high expectations for this new baby dragon. The giants thought that this new dragon would spit fire as huge as an explosion. Most of the other competitors were nervous about it, but they pretended that it didn't really bother them. Sephora always teamed up with Fabinacco, spelled Fabinacho.
Anyway, Fabinacco was excited about Sephora and he couldn't wait to team up with the dragon, although he would have to wait for a year when it finally became a teen. Small dragons were forbidden to participate in the competition. They could go out and play in the forest or practice their fire spit or flying. So, one warm morning, Sephora's egg hatched. The egg had made some popping sounds and the egg little by little started to crack open. First by segments and then completely and out came a dragon who seemed to be covered with syrup.
Sephora's instinct immediately came in and she began to lick the strange liquid off the dragon's body until it was basically gone.
"How beautiful! Is it a boy or a girl?" Fabinacco asked as he looked at the baby dragon in awe.
"It's a girl and I will call her Nefataria," Sephora said.
"Nefataria! What a beautiful name,"Fabinacco said. Dragons used to speak in these old days. Their language was as sophisticated as a humanoid, but the wizards of Malpestria cast a spell on them to turn them all mute, but this is another story.
Fabinacco laughed and clapped his hands as he saw the baby dragon. She had green and blue scales, just like her mother. Her feet were flat and she barely had any sharpness to her claws. Her jaw was still small as her wings, but she was adorable and everyone who met her loved her. She had great black eyes.
Nefataria grew up to be a beautiful dragon, but there was one problem. When it was her time to spit fire. She couldn't do it. She could walk well, talk well, fly well, but she couldn't spit fire. At first, Sephora wasn't concerned because she thought that Nefataria was probably a late bloomer, but when she saw that time passed and that all of Nefataria's friends could spit out fire, but she couldn't, she realized that something was wrong.
Sephora took Nefataria to a healer. This giant, took a look at her and said that maybe honey could help her spit fire.
"Give her three gulps of honey every morning for seven days and let's see what happens," the healer said and so Sephora fetched for honey for her daughter and she fed her the three gulps every morning for seven days, but the honey didn't work and Nefataria still couldn't spit out fire.
"What is wrong with that dragon?" The other dragons said. The community of dragons began to suspect that there was something wrong with Nefataria. This made Sephora worry to the point that she could not sleep. One night as she tucked Nefataria in her hole with fallen leaves, she remembered the great wise dragon, Lamashi. Lamashi, did not live with the community per-se. It was said that he lived deep in the forest, alone, where he learned about the universe of Wastilia or so they said.
That night, Sephora decided that Lamashi might have some answers for her daughter. It was the first time she could sleep after many nights of insomnia. The very next day before the two suns even came out, Sephora woke her daughter up and told her that they were leaving the community to talk to the wisest dragon of all.
"Lamashi? What a weird name," Nefataria said.
"Yes, I know, but don't say that. He is very wise. If someone will know what is going on, it is him. He will have the answer. Let us fly together my sweet daughter," Sephora said and so they flapped open their wings, they made a squat and then pushed themselves up with their legs and flapped their wings.
Zoom, zoom, zoom.
"Mom... what if I can't spit out fire?" Nefataria asked her mother worried.
"Don't be silly. Of course, you can," Sephora said.
"But mom, what if I can't? Will you still love me?" Nefataria asked her mother. Her mother didn't even realize that this was Nefataria's true concern.
"Of course, I'll love you. I love you now even though you're not spitting fire, but I believe that you will," Sephora said, but she wasn't so sure. What if Nefataria couldn't spit out fire?
