I walked out of the building and onto the sidewalk. The group was waiting there for me, chatting amongst themselves.
"Are you good, Kat?" Abby asked when she saw me.
I nodded. "Yeah, I'm alright. Where are the Chariots?"
"That one guard left them in his tower." Mastermind rubbed his head. "I kinda regret leaving our precious transportation with strangers, to be honest."
"Then we should head over," J said with a nonchalant shrug.
We started walking down the street, but realized we could use boats like before. So we found another boat shop, and made our way down the canals. There wasn't much talking.
Eventually we made it to the other boat shop, then walked through the garden, and finally to the wall.
There was a guard standing there, but not the same one. When Mastermind asked for the Chariots, he seemed hesitant to give them to us, as if we were stealing them. Infinity got up in the guard's face and asked him if he seriously thought anyone else knew about or had made flying transportation nicknamed 'Chariots'. He gave them back to us.
Mastermind and Yuri pulled out the Chariot and went to the other side of the moat, where we were waiting.
"Come on, peasants!" Yuri called.
People walked around saying their goodbyes, mostly just handshakes and fist bumps. Infinity hugged Abby and I, and punched Gordon in the shoulder in an affectionate way. Abby and Gordon did a quick hug and Jazz tackled Ash and Scarlet. Jona and Skye were men, so of course their hug was manly.
"Hey." I walked up to J.
"Hi..." He looked around, looking slightly worried.
"Relax, I'm cool with you." I held out my hand. "I just wanted to say thanks. And good luck."
He looked at my hand, then back at me. He gave a small smile, and accepted my handshake. "I'll make sure they all come back."
"You'd better." I smiled back.
I made eye contact with Scarlet. Her and I didn't approach each other, but I gave her a nod, which she returned.
"I'm gonna miss you all!" Gordon jokingly cried, having both Elly and Rein in a headlock in each arm.
"Thank you... Gordon..." Rein patted his arm, trying to cheer him up so he could release them.
"Kat." Yuri called to me. "Do not forget what we discussed."
"There's our mysterious Yuri." Gordon laughed, letting go of the two girls.
I smiled, and gave Yuri a shrug. "We'll see what happens."
He grumbled something, obviously displeased. Then, he said in a louder voice, "Let's get this show on the road!"
We all climbed onto our Chariots. When Infinity got onto Yuri's, she crafted the eyes of ender.
"So I just chuck one in the air?" She called out to Abby.
Abby climbed onto Mastermind's Chariot. "Yep! Make sure you do it straight up, though!"
Infinity looked up, then tossed one up with a hearty "YEET!". The eye of ender stayed straight in the air for a millisecond, but then shifted its course to the west. It travelled about twelve blocks before falling to the ground.
"Okay, that's pretty cool." Infinity stared at the eye of ender on the ground. "Gordon, get that."
Gordon sighed, then climbed out of the Chariot. We all watched with amused looks as he slowly walked over and picked it up.
"Onward!" Yuri moved the Chariot and turned it so it went along the right side of the wall, and headed west.
"Whoa!" Gordon ran forward, and grabbed Glitch's outstretched hand from the moving vehicle. He climbed over, falling on the floor of the Chariot and disappearing from sight.
As they continued on, everyone waved bye to us, including Gordon when he got up. We waved back until they were too far away.
"Alright." Mastermind started turning our Chariot. "Nathan said east, right? Then let's go punch the sun in the face."
★ ☆ ★ ☆ ★
We did not punch the sun in the face.
In fact, it was almost as if the sun was punching us. With mechanical problems, though, instead of heat.
There was only smooth sailing as we glided across the rest of the plains, but once we went over a forest, things started getting wonky.
The first thing that happened was the entire back of the Chariot moving to the right abruptly, as if something hit into it. That happened a few times over a few hours before it started moving to the left. We had to stop so Mastermind could check underneath, but he noticed nothing.
The next thing was the fireworks disappearing. We started lowering to the ground, as if we were running out of power. When Mastermind checked again, all of the fireworks in one of the dispensers were gone. Luckily we had plenty of extras, but it was still concerning.
Finally, when we continued after dinner and over another plains, it started shifting up, right, and left randomly.
We had tried staying positive by passing the time with games. I Spy wasn't a good one, since it was either trees or clouds. We tried Charades, but everything was pretty easy to guess. Well, besides the time Jazz tried to be tall grass.
"Why would you even be that?" Elly exclaimed.
"Because you couldn't guess it." Jazz proudly proclaimed. To that, Elly shoved him over.
We also did karaoke without music. Jona and I didn't though, because he was too shy (or as he put it, 'too cool'), and me because I didn't know any songs. Rein and Abby did a killer run on Mine Diamonds, though. It hurt our ears afterward, which means they rocked it.
Eventually, though, throats were hurting, and we all got bored again.
"How far is this minecart factory?" Elly groaned. "We've been driving all day."
"We?" Mastermind asked incredulously.
"Nathan did say it took him about a week to get there." I reminded them. "Then again, he was walking, so we'll get there more quickly."
"We better get there soon." Abby sighed, tapping the railing blocks. "I don't know how much longer the Chariot can go on for."
"Don't you question her." Mastermind turned around to point to her accusingly, then went back to driving.
Abby stuck her tongue at him behind his back, and I chuckled. Mastermind wasn't in a good mood because of all the troubles.
"It is directly east, right? Because it seems like you have been deviating a little bit to the left," Jona noted.
"Would you like to drive?" Mastermind snapped.
"Okay!" Rein stood up. "I think we're getting tired. We've been flying all day. It's dark, we should sleep." She turned to Mastermind. "All of us."
Mastermind stared straight ahead, then sighed. He flipped a lever, and the Chariot started slowing down. "Abby, I can hover it for a little bit, but can you build a platform? The leaves aren't strong enough to hold its weight."
"I'm on it." Once the Chariot slowed down, she hopped out and started making a wood platform on the trees. When it was big enough, she placed down torches in the corners to light it all up. "Alright!"
Mastermind gently set the Chariot on the wood. He climbed down and stomped over to the underside, then broke a block and crawled under.
I sighed. "Poor guy."
"He worked so hard on this," Elly added, pity on her face.
"If it stops working, we're going to lose a lot of time." Jona put up his hood and started leaning back. Abby hit his arm, and he jerked up, adding, "But of course he will fix it!" He looked at Abby, who nodded in approval, and then he laid down.
I looked at the others, who were starting to find comfy areas. Then, I climbed over the side, and walked to Mastermind. Only his legs were sticking out, and he was mumbling incoherently.
"Is there anything I could do to help?" I asked.
His legs stopped moving. Then, in a muffled and low voice, he answered, "You could check around the wings. Make sure there aren't tears or loose parts."
I nodded, even though he didn't see me, and walked around, inspecting the fabric of the wings. I tugged at parts, but everything was in tiptop shape.
"Everything's all good." I reported back to the cyborg.
He sighed, and crawled out from under the Chariot, leaning against it. His hair was tousled and his one human eye had bags under it. He looked exhausted.
I sat next to him without saying anything.
"I just don't get it." He pressed his head against the terracotta. "I don't understand why it isn't working. Nothing is missing, nothing is loose, it's all perfect. It should be perfect."
"I'm sorry." I rested my hand on his shoulder. "I know you worked hard on it."
"Making these Chariots was my proudest moment. I know Yuri has been trying to take credit for everything, but I came up with the concept for it. I just..." He sighed again, and lightly hit his head against the wall in frustration. "This was supposed to be my greatest achievement."
"It hasn't broken yet," I reminded him, "there's just a few mishaps. It'll fix itself soon."
"And if it doesn't? I would screw us over because of my shoddy designing."
"Mastermind." I sternly said, putting my hand on his other shoulder and turning him toward me. "The Chariot has worked perfectly so far. I don't know what's happening now, but you will fix it. Maybe it just needs time to cool down. If it doesn't work, it's not the end of the world. We will still make it to the factory, and you will be able to make another model in the future if you want to keep going. No matter what, this has been amazing and has worked, and you should feel proud of that."
He looked at the ground in despair. "Everyone automatically assumes I'm amazing at engineering because of my... condition. And yeah, I love redstone and engineering, and I want to do it for a living, but I just want to be good enough, you know?"
"You feel like you have a reputation to live up to because you're part machine?"
He nodded. "I know it's stupid, but it's not like I can hide what I look like."
I looked at him, trying to figure out how I could make him feel better. "Sure you can. Just grow out your hair over your one eye to hide it, and wear long sleeves."
He stared at me, and I saw a small smile forming. "I would look emo."
"I don't!" I exclaimed. Then, with a whisper, I added, "Do I?"
His smile grew. "Nah. Your bright highlights cancel it out."
I patted the parts of my hair that came out of my hood. "Why, thank you. I tried my best."
Finally he chuckled, and I smiled too.
"And if it makes you feel any better, I know exactly what you're going through." I continued, leaning against the Chariot. "People expect me to be amazing at, like, everything because I'm a demigod. I have huge expectations to live up to. But I dunno, I think maybe someday I'll decide to give people whatever I want to give them and just be myself. Forget what they think, you know? It'll be hard, but... the right people will be okay with me once I'm ready."
Mastermind looked at me with his lips pressed in a straight smile, then sighed once again, but this time it didn't seem as distressed. "Yeah, they will be. You're right. Maybe it does need the night to calm down. I'm sorry I dumped all that on you."
"Hey man, we're friends. We dump stuff on each other. It's what we do." I realized I was being kind of hypocritical saying that since I had a lot of secrets I kept, but oh well. I needed to console the guy.
"Right." He laughed. "Well hey, if you ever need to talk to someone, let me know. I owe you now."
Sure, bud. Sure.
"Thanks." I grinned.
We both got up, and got into the Chariot.
"You doin' alright?" Abby asked Mastermind. "Is everything okay?"
He nodded. "Yeah, we're good. We're gonna let it cool down for the night. Get some rest; I'll take the first wa-"
"I'll take the first watch." I cut him off. "You need sleep. You look awful."
"Okay, ouch." He smiled. "Okay, fine. I won't fight. But only for a couple of hours."
"We'll see." I smiled back and winked.
He glared at me, then laid down by the helm, facing away.
I kicked his foot teasingly, and he jutted it back out blindly without looking. With a quick look around, I saw everyone else either sleeping or shifting around to sleep.
Then, I climbed up to the top deck and sat on the edge, surveying the area. The forest around us was pretty flat, so I didn't have to worry about mobs getting on the leaves. And skeletons couldn't shoot us from the open areas around the trees. The only thing I'd really have to worry about were spiders randomly wandering up there.
I sighed, swinging my legs. Being on watch was always boring, especially when I wasn't trying to think about anything. I had too many emotional experiences the past two days, and I couldn't risk much more.
But still... I was bored.
I searched my inventory for something to do. My flame sword, my bow, arrows, armor, food, blocks...
There were also the two books I had. The one about gold that Steve wrote, and the one about Herobrine.
I pulled out the one about Herobrine. It was titled 'The Fall', and was a maroon color, with glowing white eyes under the title. The eyes were eerily real; it was like they were staring into my soul.
At first I was thinking about reading it, but I felt too alone, too vulnerable. And I was still hesitant about knowing Herobrine as a human. So I put it away, and started star-gazing.
About half an hour later, I heard a noise. Leaves were rustling in a specific area not too far from where we were. I ignored it for a little while, but when it started getting louder, I was worried it would wake everyone up. So I hopped off the Chariot, pulled out my sword, and jumped onto the ground.
It was pretty dark, so I lit up my sword. Luckily, there were no mobs around to ambush me. I headed toward the rustling sound, which was still continuing. It was from the leaves of a larger tree, but I couldn't see what was causing it yet.
I walked up to the tree, looking up in the branches. I circled around, and moved my sword up high, expecting a spider.
However, when I waved it on a specific branch, I found a completely different mob.
An enderman was in the tree, clinging to a branch and moving the leaves around. He stopped and looked at me.
I was startled, but quickly looked away so he didn't attack me, but it was too late. He leapt down on top of me, pushing me to the ground and knocking my sword out of my hand. It extinguished as it hit the grass.
Before he could do anything else, I kicked one of his skinny legs and it collapsed under him. I then kicked his chest and knocked him away from me. I grabbed my sword and lit it up again, and stabbed the enderman. He disintegrated without a scream.
I didn't have time to do anything else, because another grabbed my arm. I swung at him, and he backed away, and then something shoved me from behind. My fall to the ground transformed into a well-timed roll, and I stabbed another enderman. As he disintegrated, I was attacked yet again.
This kept going on for too long. I was able to fight them off for a good amount of time because of my nighttime strength, but I was still losing. I wanted to get under the trees and to a safer spot, but I was trapped. More kept coming. Finally, a swarm came, and my sword was knocked out of my hand once again. Both of my arms were held back by different endermen, and I was shoved to my knees.
"H-" I tried to shout, but fabric was tied around my mouth.
I struggled, tugging and pulling. I expected them to start hurting me, but nothing was happening, like they were only trying to keep me powerless. The extras that were surrounding me were circling and moving around like wild animals, but they didn't make any noise. The whole experience was quiet.
Suddenly, they straightened, and all stood still simultaneously. The ones in front of me parted, and a taller enderman walked through. His hands were behind his back, and his long, slow strides radiated calmness and regalness.
"That was easier than I thought." General Enderman tilted his head. "I suppose I overprepared."
I wanted to speak, but I couldn't, so I simply growled at him.
He bent over and gently grabbed my chin, tilting my head up. "Hm. I heard you changed your look, but I hadn't seen it for myself. The hood was a nice touch."
I jerked my head out of his grip, and he straightened and turned around. The endermen had built a nether portal while he spoke to me. It was lit by one, and the purple glow shimmered. My eyes widened, and I started feeling panicked.
"Come now." General Enderman walked forward. "Your father wishes to see you."
I struggled and pulled, my screams muffled through the thick fabric. I ripped my arm out of an enderman's grip, and punched the other one in the gut. It let go as it doubled over. Another grabbed my one arm, but my other was still free. I was about to tear the fabric away to scream for help, but General Enderman appeared right in front of me and grabbed my arm swiftly with ease. He held it with no problem despite me trying to move it with all my might. That only made me even more scared.
"You seem tired." He said in his low, soothing voice. He lifted his other hand, which had a dim purple glow to it, and touched my forehead gently.
I kept trying to move around and jerk my arms free. However, the feeling relaxed my head, and made me drowsy. I tried to fight it off, but my eyes didn't want to stay open.
I collapsed, my last thought being of my hope that my friends would live.

Abby
I woke up from someone shaking me.
It's a shame, too, because I was dreaming of building the tallest skyscraper in the world, all the way above the clouds. It was sick.
Shame, though, because the height I was achieving was too high for a normal person to survive at for so long. Alas, some dreams are only meant to be dreams.
Oh right, waking up.
"Abby." They hissed. "Abby!"
I jerked up, hitting something metal.
"Ow..." I rubbed my head. My vision cleared up, and Mastermind was rubbing his head as well. "What is it? Do you need me to take watch?"
"What?" He asked in a whisper, confused. "No. Kat's gone."
"What?" I looked around. From the light of the torches, I could tell Kat was indeed not on the Chariot. I rubbed my eyes. "You checked the top deck?"
"Yes. I also was going to search around the forest, but when I went up top, I found this note." He handed me a paper.
I walked over toward the light of a torch, and read it.
I had to check on something. Don't worry, I'm fine. Be back soon. Go on without me. - Kat
I reread the note, over and over.
"Does she usually just... disappear?" Mastermind asked.
I sighed. "I mean, she likes to do things on her own, yeah. But I never would've thought she would just leave us. To just up and head out without an explanation? I mean, why didn't she tell us? Or give a reason? We deserve to know!"
"Shhh..." Mastermind tapped his mouth, and pointed to Jona, who snored once, then turned over. He gave me a pitied look. "I'm sorry. Are you okay?"
I gave a frustrated huff. "We've been through so much together, but then he just leaves me."
"He?" Mastermind asked.
"I said she."
"You said he," he corrected me. "This isn't just about Kat, is it? Are you also talking about Gordon?"
"I--" I bit my lip, then exhaled, sliding down the wall. "I'm sorry."
Mastermind sat next to me. "Why are you sorry?"
"I don't know. I just feel so dramatic. This stuff isn't important. We should be discussing Kat."
"How you feel is important." He assured me. "Kat's gone now; it's okay that we talk. She actually let me rant about my feelings earlier, so I guess it's our turn."
I smiled, then it faded. "I just... we both admitted we liked each other--"
"Finally." Mastermind groaned.
"Shut up." I scolded him. "Anyway, we said we liked each other, and we unloaded some of our insecurities. Then we promised we'd be together after this whole war is over."
"Finally."
I glared at him, and he mouthed an apology.
"Anyway, again, I just felt really hurt when he left. Someone else could've volunteered to take Jazz's place. He seemed like he jumped on the End bandwagon way too quickly."
"So you think he didn't do it for Jazz, but did it to get away from you?"
"No! He wouldn't... I don't know." I rubbed the side of my face. "I'm thinking he did it because he thinks he's just ordinary, and this adventure into the unknown will make him feel better about himself. But that's stupid!"
"Abby," Mastermind whispered. "Do we need to go somewhere further so you don't have to whisper? Because you seem very passionate right now."
"No, I-- I'm sorry. But it's just stupid that he would leave me for that. We said we were going to help each other."
He stayed silent for a few seconds, his expression showing he was trying to think of what to say. "Well, we know Gordon is an idiot. No offense."
"None taken at all."
"He does some things that we don't really understand. But he's still a good guy with a great heart, he's shown us that many times. Whatever his reason was for leaving, I'm sure he didn't mean to hurt you."
"I know." I sighed. "He's not a bad guy. And I don't want to be mad at him. I just can't help but feel like this."
"I get that. I don't think you think he's bad. Maybe once things get more action-packed here you'll realize you forgive him."
"Maybe." I shrugged. "I dunno. I guess we'll have to find out." I looked back at the note. "I'm also annoyed with Kat for leaving."
"Me too." Mastermind frowned. "She should've woken me up for my watch."
"She probably didn't want us wanting to tag along." I wondered. "I am curious about what she's doing. And how she'll get back to us."
"Maybe she went back to Corola. She did seem to hate leaving her family."
"True, but I don't think she would disrupt the quest for them. This must be demigod business."
Mastermind was silent for a few seconds, staring off into the distance. "What do you think about all that?"
"About her being a demigod?"
"About her past. About her going to the Aether. Her being Notch's kid. And what she remembers and doesn't remember. Some of it adds up, but some of it doesn't."
"You're not suggesting she's lying, are you?"
"I'm not saying she's doing it maliciously, but just to protect us."
"I mean..." I shifted, trying to remember what Kat told us. "There are chunks that are left out, yeah, but I don't know how much she would keep from us. She doesn't even know everything. And we're her friends; there should be no reason why she'd hide things. We've been through so much with her already."
"I guess. I just wish she'd remember so she can tell us," he joked.
I chuckled. "Yeah, she's being selfish, not remembering."
We both laughed quietly.
I sighed. "I hope she comes back soon, though. And that she'll be able to see Jeb too."
"I doubt she wants to miss him." Mastermind stood up. "Anyway, you should get some sleep."
I felt bad, but I was tired, so I didn't argue. I laid down, and said, "Wake me up for the next watch, please."
"Sure thing. We slept through a few extra hours, though, so it'll be the final one. You'll have to wake us at sunrise." He walked away toward the front.
"Aye aye, captain." I closed my eyes for a couple of minutes before finally falling asleep.
