That night, I had another dream. Getting this team together has kick started these dam dreams.
A woman and young boy are running through the woods. They look cut up and bruised. The woman has a long gash along her thigh and is limping. The little boy is crying. The woman stumbles and falls over. The boy stops next to her.
"Keep going!" She yells out, "They're after you!"
"I'm not leaving you mommy!" The boy cries, "You're coming with me."
"It's not me they're after." She says, "They're after you. You need to get away. Your father will protect you."
"How?"
"No time to explain, now keep running."
I suddenly become aware of crashing in the woods around the two. Instinctively, I step forward to try and protect the two, but I can't move. Stupid dream. Figures appear behind the two and point something at them. The figures are completely obscured by the shadows, so I don't know what type of monsters they are.
"Surrender." A muffled voice says.
"What do you want?!" The woman screeches.
"We want you son." The voice says, "Hand him over, and we will let you go."
"Run Andrew!" She yells at her son.
Andrew just remains rooted to the spot, staring fearfully at the figures. He opens his mouth slightly, but nothing comes out. I watch, helpless to do anything as the shadows begin to crowd in closer to the two people. The sound in my dream goes out for a second, but in that time, something happens, because suddenly the mother falls over. Blood begins to seep out from under her body.
"Mommy!" The boy screams.
The dream goes dark.
I immediately wake up and in a blur of motion, dive towards my desk and grasp onto my notebook. Praying to Tyche, goddess of fortune, I open the notebook. There is one name on the Urgent page: Andrew Galloway. It's flashing, which is never a good sign. I touch his name, and the usual information pops up. He's a son of Hephaestus, and he's currently in Yellowstone National Park. I try to read more, but the information begins to fade away.
"No!" I stare helplessly at the notebook as all information about the kid disappears, and is replaced by a new notification.
Deceased.
I close the notebook and slump down onto the floor. I'd seen him die. Right there. That dream was in real time. I was right there, and there was nothing I could do. I sit there for a good ten minutes before I hear a knock on my door.
"Percy?" Katie calls out, "Are you up? We're having breakfast, then Athena is going to show us the rest of the place."
"Yeah." I call out, "Yeah, give me a sec."
I stand back up and throw on a random shirt and pair of running pants. I habitually put my notebook in the back pocket. I open the door and walk out into the foyer/living room area. Everyone is just lounging around, talking.
"Good morning Perce." Amelia says, yawning, then notices my face, "Holy Styx Percy. You look like you didn't get any sleep."
I take out my notebook and open it up, "Display last notification." I say quietly.
Mike picks up the notebook and looks at it. His eyes widen.
"When did this happen?" He almost whispers.
"Ten minutes ago."
Mike looks down sadly as Reyna snatches the notebook from his hand. Her eyes widen as well and she closes it.
"I'm sorry." She says quietly.
"Why are you apologizing?" I ask bitterly, "I'm the leader; it's my responsibility and therefore, my fault. This makes six." The last line comes out barely a whisper.
"Six what?" Bobby asks.
"Six demigods who have died because I wasn't there." I say simply, then clench my fists, "I was there! I watched it happen and there was nothing I could do!"
"Watched it happen?" Amelia looks at me, confused.
"I had a dream last night." Even to me, my voice sounds hollow, "In this dream, a mother and young boy were running from a group of monsters. It... It was this boy and his mother. I literally watched the boy's mother die."
"Dude, you were asleep." Mike says, "And this happened in Yellowstone. There was nothing you could've done."
"If I'd checked the journal last night, his name might've been on the urgent page." I reply, "No, this is my fault. It's my job to protect and help these young demigods."
"It's our job." Katie corrects me, "You don't have to shoulder the entire responsibility by yourself anymore. That's why we joined you."
Everyone nods in agreement.
"What's with the solemn expressions? I thought that was my job?" I turn to see Azrael come down the hallway. Behind him is Kat, who is still rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
I put on a fake smile for Kat, "I'll tell you later, Azrael. Right now, I believe the plan was to have breakfast?"
"Yeah!" Bobby cheers and rushes into the kitchen. I swear he has too much energy for a child of Somnia.
The rest of us follow him into the kitchen to find the table already loaded with food.
"How..." I don't even finish my question.
"I'm the goddess of the arts." Athena appears on the other side of the table, "Cooking is considered an art."
"Why?" I change my question.
"Part of my responsibility is to ensure that you are ready to go into the field at any given moment." Athena says, "Training, food, everything is to be handled by me."
"Okay." I'm a little unnerved by this, which just compounds on the weirdness of last night, when I found out I am Athena's superior.
"Sweet! Thank you Lady Miner- I mean Athena." Bobby sits down in a random chair and begins to pile food onto his plate.
"You're worse than I am." I mutter before my stomach takes the controls and I sit down as well.
The rest of the team follows suit and soon we're all finished.
"That was delicious." Bobby declares.
"Very impressive, Lady Athena." Katie says, "Thank you very much."
"I am only doing as my father commands." The wisdom goddess says.
"And you have no problem with this?" I ask.
She looks at me, her face completely unreadable. Given her pride though, something tells me that there was a large amount of debate before she conceded to this job.
Amelia goes to stand up, but then Reyna stops her, "Where are you going?"
"Back to the living room, why?"
"Not before washing off your dishes." The ex-praetor says.
I catch on, "That's right. Athena may be cooking for us, but she is a goddess, not a servant. That goes for everybody. We'll figure out how to divide up responsibilities later, but we're going it be civilized."
"Like you're going to be able to stick with that." Katie says, humor in her voice, "I've seen the inside of your cabin on inspection day."
"My room is my own business." I say, "Now I believe everyone would like to see this awesome training floor below us, so if you hurry up, then we'll head over there."
Everyone gets up to clean off their plates, and Athena pulls me off to the side.
I stand there expectantly, until she eventually speaks up, "Thank you."
"No need to thank me." I reply, "Everyone on this team has to pull their weight."
Ten minutes later, everyone is standing in front of the door that leads to the below-floor training area.
"Before we go do there, can I ask how exactly there is a second floor?" Amelia demands.
"Pocket dimensions."
Everyone looks at Azrael weirdly.
"What's a pocket dimension?" Bobby asks.
"A parallel region of space that can only be accessed through specific points and exists on a different wavelength from the rest of the world, allowing it to reside in the same space as something else." Athena says, "And Azrael is exactly correct."
"I have no idea what any of that means." I declare, "But let's go."
I open the door and begin to walk down the stairs with everyone following me. After what is definitely more than one flight of stairs, we come to another door. This one looks like the entrance to a military base. Looking back at the rest of my team, I open the door.
"Woah." Bobby declares, "This is one Hades of a room."
I nod in agreement. The place is the size of an Olympic track. Actually, it has a track around the outside of it. The inside has a sword-fighting arena. Along the side is an archery range. I look to my left and see a weapons rack with any weapon you could possibly think of, from swords to guns to even some of those crazy ninja weapons.
"This is your training area." Athena declares, somewhat pointlessly, "As you can see, there is a track, weights, an arena, archery and gun range, and your supply of weapons. I'll leave you to test everything out in your free time."
"Okay, I admit." Azrael says, "I'm impressed."
"About time." Amelia says, eliciting a laugh from Bobby.
"Where does that go?" Mike asks, pointing to a door that I hadn't noticed before.
"That goes to the garage." Athena says, "We'll go there next."
"This is a big room." Kat says.
It was such a simple statement. The size of the room. That's something I just took for granted. Yet to the little pipsqueak, that is quite an amazing thing. Now that I look around, I do realize that it is in fact a very large room. That's what gets me to laugh for the first time today.
"It is a big room." I reply to the young daughter of Apollo, "Maybe we should call it the Big Room."
"Can we?" She looks up at me hopefully.
"What do you guys say?" I ask the rest of the team, "The little lady wants to call it the Big Room."
"I don't see a problem with that." Katie smiles at Kat.
The rest of the team choruses their agreement.
"Alright, the Big Room it is." I declare officially, "Now let us see this garage."
Mike leads the way to the door he noticed and opens it up.
"Okay, this may be cooler than the Big Room." Bobby stares at the vehicles in the garage.
"All of them are equipped with the best of modern technology." Athena says, "Modified to operate with celestial bronze. Even the civilian vehicles have been militarized."
I look around the garage until my eyes fall on one specific vehicle, "That one's mine!"
I race over and stand in front of the all black Kawasaki Ninja. Everyone suddenly starts claiming different cars. I got the only motorcycle.
Amelia goes to get into a Maserati Spyder when I stop her.
"Do you know how to drive?" I ask, using a voice that says that I already know the answer.
"Well..." She starts.
"We'll make sure you and Azrael know how to drive, but until then, no go on the vehicles."
"Aww." Amelia complains while Azrael shrugs.
"You're thirteen." I point out, "I shouldn't have given you the possibility without at least getting a permit first."
"Actually, I am going to make that a rule." Athena speaks up, "Only licensed drivers can use the vehicles."
The vehicle choices are amazing. I mean, the garage has everything short of a tank and a helicopter.
"Just the tank." Athena says suddenly.
The entire team looks at her weirdly, and I claw at my head. She read my thought!
"Not cool Athena." I sigh.
Suddenly, an alarm sounds throughout the garage, causing everyone to jump.
"Ow!" Mike comes out from under the hood of one of the cars, "What in Hades is that?"
"The alarm." Athena points out the obvious, "A demigod is in danger."
L pull the notebook out of my back pocket and flip to the first page, "A son of Nemesis. The name is Tyler Ragnar, and he's six years old." I groan, "Really, why are you gods even in Jersey to begin with?"
Athena just shrugs.
"Alright." I input the address to the kid's house in Princeton, NJ., "Katie, Reyna, you two are with me. Grab a car and try to keep up!"
"What about us?" Amelia asks.
"There's a reason there is more than one of us." I put my helmet on and mount the bike, "Be on alert if another demigod appears. Mike is in charge until I get back."
The four members staying behind nod in acknowledgement. I toss Mike the notebook.
"Alright ladies, let's move." I gun the throttle and race towards the exit.
