Between the barriers separating dimensions is this, lovingly named The Between in honor of what it represents. The Between, when first entered, resembles pieces of places you hold dear or greatly fear. When the veil of this has been breached, the dimension reveals its true self. It is a void of swirling whites and grays, like static. A distant hum that fades and returns is always present. The faint sight of distorted faces screaming in silence, appendages reaching out in the abyss. Truly a place to be feared and respected, as it is between time and space. This results in The Between having unique laws with time, to the point that time doesn't even seem to exist. The perception of a living being becomes altered the longer they stay, dislocating their sense of reality, leading to madness, agony, and eventually a slow transformation into something monstrous: a Horror.

Many sentients that have tried to cross over into adjacent dimensions end up falling into The Between, and while others escape, those that remain are not so lucky. A curse and a blessing, the Horrors have made their own timeless society. In delirium and confusion, there are twisted cities in the shifting abyss, and from different times, the ruler is known as the Sun. An insanely huge ball of black and white fire, she watches The Between with thousands of eyes. She often pokes fun at the new arrivals, killing them only to smile as they return to life with fear in their souls. Her power has grown to the point that she is mostly sane, and can return to the mortal form she once possessed.

Horror

Horrors are what become of those that lost themselves in The Between. While compared to Conductors due to their serious deformation, Horrors are essentially an upgraded variant, and at the same time, not. The escalation to becoming a Horror is slow, gradual, like an illness eating away until nothing remains. Matter and cells contort, taking on a new, warped appearance, often inflating to a much larger size. Consciousness is preserved, but the nervous system may not be. Often, a Horror will lose control of their motor functions, resulting in periods where they behave erratically and mindlessly. Sometimes the opposite is the case, where the Horror is perfectly in control, but is not aware of themself.

Another unique attribute a Horror will be subjected to is gaining powers, often related to the things they knew as a mortal. Interests, hates, they will become a part of the Horror's biological and magical abilities. Examples of this can be a fear of insects, manifesting as a Horror's newfound power over insects.

The Ascended

Nine Horrors have been traced to existing before the Rapture, but only six have been recorded. What makes these Horrors unique is a shared ability among them: to erase things from existence and memory. Karmatically, if an Ascended is killed, they instead become forgotten by all. Their impact on the universe is also a feat to be recognized, and knowing which you encounter may save your soul.

Saw-Blade Broken From Lace is the first, and an unexpected being to become a Horror capable of mass erasure. It was once engineered mold growing on a rusted saw blade, as this mold was created to break down metallic material. This Ascended is responsible for creating the Sins: nine small creatures that were later identified and glorified to the universal elements that allow things to exist. These Sins are, of course: Decay, Curiosity, Ego, Fear, Violence, Procreation, Attachments, Hypocrisy, and Mirrors. Saw-Blade's voice is many, because it is many, and while it is mostly self sufficient it has grown a new sense of compassion and desire. These emotions led it to gather others like it, thus forming the group known as The Ascended.

Holy Effervesce In The Name Of Faith is the second, and the first of the three Humans to gain this title. His name is Enoch. He was once a priest and the leader of a diminishing country, and his entrapment in The Between gave him the confidence to enact revenge for his people. This, of course, would lead to disastrous consequences in the future. He is responsible for creating the virus known as end-of-sufferings, which transforms infected beings into Saints, therefore making him directly responsible for the Rapture in the first place. While believing he was doing the right thing, millions of years later, he holds massive regret for his actions. Yet, he cannot stop humanity from continuing its holy mission, and those he hurt refuse to forgive him.

Diamond In The Rough is the third, and was once a ruby red lizard. Giving a timid creature the power of a god is an ill-fit thing to bestow, but even with clairvoyant abilities, it managed to keep itself sane. This Ascended is responsible for creating the Riverdwellers, and making a home in End Dirge. It is also responsible for the Rulers of End Dirge. Diamond In The Rough then had a vision of another Ascended's demise, and sent one of its mercenaries after its fellow Horror.

Ring Of Fire is the fourth, and was once a Lanestoi. Her name is Offline. A wish-granting creature being promoted to a god is an ego-boosting feat, one of which this Ascended refuses to let be ignored. She conquers by choice, but finds that it's not easy, and so created several pseudo-gods to do it for her. She is responsible for the Hemilous Guardians, and after their rebellion, was trapped within the planet she wanted worship from. She does have the power to disrupt technology and manipulate fire, but lost the ability to grant wishes.

Neon Arrows Pointing South is the fifth, and is the second Human. Her name is Videl Sunnyside, and she was actually one of the first mutant prototypes. She took her ascension well, as she gained the power to transform into almost any creature she desired. Rather than making a living in another dimension, conquering, creating, or commanding, she pretends to be various mortals. She then befriends actual mortals, manipulates them, and eventually kills them. It's a sick game to her, and she wouldn't have it any other way.

Dotted Lines On Paper Roses is the sixth, and is the last Human. Their name is Expunge Maghet, and they are forever fourteen years old, as that was the age they fell into The Between. They became a being made of paper with edges so sharp that it can cut through nearly anything. They also have the power to communicate with plants. This Ascended is responsible for creating the Prismphasms, but why is unknown. Dotted Lines has fled from one of Diamond In The Rough's rulers for nearly a billion years, and it's speculated that in the future, they will meet their demise and this entry, along with the knowledge of the Prismphasms, will be expunged. To combat this fate, the Dimensional Spacetime Protection Agency has created a clone of them named Data Expunged.
