Chapter 7
After Hershel pulls the bullet out of my arm, sews it up, and bandages it, Glenn draws a map of the prison on the floor in chalk.
"So, you said that you found Tyresse's group here," he asks Carl, pointing at a box.
"Yeah." Carl replies. "We secured that," I comment. "He thought that he came in through here." Carl adds, pointing to another box.
"That means there's a breach." Glenn mutters. "Ok. The whole front of the prison is unsecured. If walkers just strolled in, then it's gonna be cake for a group of armed men." He adds.
"Why're we even so sure he's gonna attack?" Beth asks. "Maybe you scared him off."
"He had fishtanks full of head." Michonnie comments. "Walkers and humans. Trophies. He's coming." She adds.
"We should hit him now." Glenn says.
"What?" Beth asks.
"He won't be expecting it! We'll sneak back in, and put a bullet in his head." Glenn explains.
"And the people? Who acted so strange toward our attack? They didn't fight, they ran and hid. When we take him down, we're guaranteeing all of their deaths. You want that?" I ask.
"It's better than us being dead." Glenn fires back.
"You know where his apartment is. You and I could end this tonight. I'll do it myself." Glenn tells Michonnie. She nods.
"The other men, who did fight back?" I try again. "They'll just come back!"
"They won't have a leader. They'll be scrambling to cover each other." Glenn shoots at me.
"He didn't know that you were coming last time." Hershel says calmly. "And look why happened. You were almost killed, Daryl was captured, Oscar was killed, Alex was shot, and you and Maggie were almost executed." He adds.
"You can't stop me." Glenn snarls, walking toward Hershel. "Rick would never allow this." Hershel protests. "You really think that he's in any position to make that choice?" Glenn questions. "Think this through clearly. T Dog lost his life here, Lori too. The men that were here. It isn't worth any more killing. What're we waiting for? If he's really on his way, then we should be out of here by now." Hershel explains.
"And go where?" Glenn asks. "We lived in the road all winter." Hershel replies. "Back when when you had two legs, and we didn't have a baby crying for walkers every for hours." Glenn snaps. "We can't stay here." Hershel protests. "We can't run." Glenn snaps.
Maggie walks into the cell block, clearly upset.
Glenn looks at all of us. "Alright. We'll stay put. We're gonna defend this place. We're making a stand." he says.
"Carl, you and I will go down to the tombs. We need to figure out where the breach is." Glenn says. "You got it," Carl replies. "You'll need some help." Michonnie offers, stepping forward. "No. In case anything happens, I need you up here." Glenn replies.
He looks around, something registering in his head. "Who's on watch?" He asks angrily before storming outside.
Once Glenn and Carl come back, Glenn nearly looses it with frustration. "Two were outside the boiler room again." He snaps. "But the whole section had already been cleared!" Beth exclaims, locking the door. "We're wasting time," Hershel calls out. "The Govenor is supposedly on the way, and we're stuck in here with walkers." He adds.
"For the last time, running is not an option!" Glenn nearly shouts. "Glenn, if the tombs have filled up again, then it may just be a matter of time before they push in here." Carol says. "Or until some fence gives way." Beth adds. "What if one of them herde's is passing through, or settled?" Axel points out. "Can't handle that with just the few of us," Carol murmurs.
"Ok, we just need to scout the far side of the prison, find out what's going on." Glenn suggests.
"You're going out there?" Hershel asks. "I'll take a car, make it quick." Glenn says. "I'll drive," Axel offers. "No. You stay here, help with the fortifications. I'll take Maggie." Glenn snaps. "You sure she's up for that?" Hershel asks. Glenn walks off.
I walk to Carl. "Everything go ok down there?" I ask softly. He shrugs. "Of you count Glenn loosing it with a walker and destroying it." He replies quietly. My eyes widen, and he chuckles. "It's ok, he thinks I didn't see him," he murmurs before pressing his mouth to mine. After a moment, he pulls away. "C'mon," he murmurs, "let's go load up our guns. Just in case..."
He doesn't finish the sentence.
We hear gunshots, and rush out. Hershel is crouching in the field, Rick is on the bridge, Carol is hiding behind Axel's dead body, and the Govenor stands at the gate.
Beth comes out of nowhere, grabbing me and Carl, pulling us to the wall. I do a quick scan. A man with the Govenor, a man in the woods, and a man in the guard tower.
We shoot back and forth, neither side making a dent. Suddenly, a van comes, crashing through the gates to be field. The back opens, and walkers spill out.
I catch my breath in horror as a few walkers stumble toward Hershel.
We finally take out the man in the tower. The Govenor leaves in his car.
We rush into the field, just as Glenn's truck comes in. We shoot at the walkers. Michonnie runs for Hershel, and Glenn and Michonnie help Hershel
into Glenn's truck. They all hop in, and come up.
Once they down in, we shut the gate. We all stand huddled together at the fence.
I can now see that Daryl and Merle have joined Rick. We stare at each other through the fences.
The Govenor, I know now, will stop at nothing to kill us. But that won't happen. I hate the Govenor, I fucking hate him.
