Chapter 9: Survivors In Training

You and Clem were sitting on the edge of the car, looking out towards the scenery as the train screams down the rails. Lee walks in the goes to sit next to Clem and looks over to you two.
"You wanna talk?" He asked. "Uh uh." You and Clem said. "You two understand what happened?" Lee asked.

"Yes." You and Clem replied.

"Okay." Lee said, softly. "What are you two thinking about?"

"What Chuck said." Clem said and you frown at this. "What'd Chuck say?" Lee asked. You look up at Lee, tears rolling down your face, and said, tearfully. "That what happened to Duck would happen to us." Clem nodded as tears formed in his eyes.

"What? The fuck he did." Lee said, anger rising in his chest. How dare Chuck say those things to two young kids. "Swear." Clem said to him.
"Sorry. I'm gonna go talk some sense into him." Lee said as he stands up. "Don't be mad." Clem said to him as Lee heads over to Chuck, who was leaning against the railing from the front of the train.

"You don't think he'll hurt Chuck, do you?" You asked Clem. Clem looks over at you and shrugs."I don't know." You frown at this and look away. "I hope not. We've already lost so many." You said and Clem gives you a concern look then places his arm around your shoulder and begins to hug you, you hug him back.

"I'm sorry about your mom, (y/n)." He said and you have a small smile on your face as you hugged Clem alittle tighter. Lee walks in after having a talk with Chuck and smiles as he sees you two hugging. He walks over to a green backpack, which was Chuck's, and pulled out a pair of scissors.

Then he walks up to you two. "Hey, kiddos." He greeted as you and Clem pull out of the embrace. "Did you talk to him?" Clem asked as Lee sits next to him. "I did, he had some, uh...he explained himself and made some good points. Look, we're not going to let anything bad happen to either of you. But there are some precautions we have to take." Lee replied.
"Yeah, okay." Clem said as you nod and said. "Makes sense."

"Don't worry, kiddos." Lee assured.
"Okay. What should we do?" Clem asked. "Well, we're going to figure out a plan for when we get to Savannah, teach you two how to protect yourselves and, uh..." Lee said then he looks over to you and said. "...tidy you up a little so you can't get grabbed so easily."

"I'd like that." Clem said.

"Yeah, me too!" You said.

"Good." Lee said as he stands up. You and Clem turn around to look up at him as he said. "You two need to know how to protect yourselves."

"Like hiding or running away, got it." You exclaimed, happily, as you and Clem stand up, smiling and nodding.
Lee reaches for his back and pulls out his gun and said. "I mean with one of these." Yours and Clem's eyes widen in fear at the gun as Lee says. "First, don't be afraid of it. It's just a thing. Take it. But know where your finger is all the time. And don't put it on the trigger unless you want to hurt somebody." He cocks the gun and holds the gun out towards you two. You and Clem look at each other before Clem reaches out for it.

"Okay. Okay." Clem said as he holds the gun. "See, it's not scary." Lee said.
"It's heavy." Clem remarked. "You'll get stronger. To aim, you look right down the top, through that notch. Line up the site at the end with your target." Lee instructed.

"Is that anything else we should know?" You asked. "When you're ready to shoot, make sure you're not breathing too hard and then hold your breath right when you pull the trigger." Lee replied. "Like when I'm swimming?" Clem asked him.
"No---just for a quick second. I found that if I did that I was a lot more accurate. It's tough, but it'll help." Lee said.

"I can do that. Okay." Clem said, nodding. Lee goes over to one end of the car and found some empty bottles and placed one bottle on top of the box as he walks over to Clem, who raised his arms up and aims for the bottle.

You stood to the side as Lee gets behind Clem and positions his arms correctly. "Good. Don't lock your elbows. Okay, let's tear your first shot. Squeeze the trigger smoothly and I'll cover your ears. Nice and easy." Lee instructed. "Nice and easy." Clem mutters as he aims and fires the gun, the shot hit just a little bit in the right from the bottle.

You jumped as Clem slightly yelped at the gunshot. "You okay?" Lee asked him. "My hands hurt. I don't like this." Clem told him. "Let's stick with it, okay?" Lee said, kindly. "Do I have to?" Clem asked, exasperated. "Yeah, you do." Lee said then he turns to you and said. "You need to do this too, (y/n)." You nod as Lee instructs Clem on how to shoot.

It took a few tries but Clem finally hit the bottle. "I got it!" He exclaimed as you clapped. "Excellent, good shot." Lee said and he puts up another bottle and goes back to instruct Clem.

It took less tries than the last bottle but Clem got it again. You clapped as Lee smiled then said. "Okay, (y/n). You're turn." You suddenly felt nervous as you walk up to Lee and Clem hands you the gun. You take it and realized that Clem was right, the gun was heavy.

Lee goes over to set up another bottle and walks behind you and positions your arms then covers your ears. You missed the first couple of shots but with Lee's help you were able to hit the bottle. You smiled as Lee congratulated you while Clem claps. Lee goes sets up another bottle and goes back to you but this time you were able to hit the bottle on your first shot.

"Wow! Nice shot, (y/n). Soon, you'll be as good as your mother was." Lee said and you smile. "But they're not walkers though." You said as your smile fades.

"No, far from it. But you two know how these things work now. We'll graduate you two to walkers one day." Lee said. "Okay, I feel good." You said.
"Me too." Clem said, nodding.

"Not so scary, huh?" Lee said as you hand the gun back. "Uh uh." You and Clem said as Lee pockets the gun then he turns to you and said. "So, you're probably not going to like this."

"Oh no, what happened?" You asked, worriedly. "Nothing. We have to talk about your hair. It's not safe." Lee replied. You furrowed your brow at him and said. "That's not nice."

"What?" Lee asked.

"Are you saying it smells?" You asked.

"No." said Lee.

"Because it does, kinda." You said.

"Do you remember when Andy St. John grabbed it? And I got mad?" Lee asked. "Yeah..." you replied. "Well that could happen again. And if it's a walker, well....we need to trim it." Lee said as he pulls out the scissors.

"Just a trim, right?" You asked him. "I need to cut it short enough so that it can't get grabbed." Lee replied and you looked down and sighed. "Okay."

"Mind if we do this now?" Lee asked. "I guess not." You said, frowning.
"Don't mope. It's a good thing." Lee said and you go to sit down. Lee goes to sit behind you as Clem sits next to you.

Lee gets the scissors ready as you ask. "Do you know how to do this?"

"Nope. No idea. I'm not much of a stylist, you know." Lee replied as he begins to cut your hair." Lee replied.
"I'm going to look like a boy." You said, sadly. "But think of how much safer you'll be." Lee said, trying to cheer you up. "I'd rather be dead." You remarked. "Shush now." Lee said as Clem said. "You don't mean that."

Lee moves your head to the side as he continues to cut your hair while you give a sad look to Clem. "So you did kill someone, before." Clem said, trying to change the subject. "Yep." Lee replied. "You could've just told me. I wouldn't have been afraid of you or anything." Clem said to him.
"I'm sorry." Lee replied.

"You've killed lots of things now; it doesn't even matter." You remarked. "You're right. Before all of this, I was sent to jail, you know." Lee said as he continues to cut your hair. "Did people ever go to jail when they shouldn't?" Clem asked. "All the time." Lee replied.

After a few moments, Lee stops cutting your hair and looks at it.
"Okay, I think I'm about done. I can probably lie these pieces back with something." He said. You dig in your pocket and pull out two purple hair bands and hand them to him. "Here, I have some hair thingies." You said. "You do?" Lee asked as he takes them.
"Uh, yeah....mommy gave them to me for sleeping." You replied as you look down sadly.

Lee ties the lose hair up then said. "All set." You run your hands behind your head to feel how short your hair was then you lower your head, dejectedly. "Does it look dumb?" You asked. "Ha, no. You look cute--and a lot harder to grab." Lee said as he pats your head while you look over at Clem. "Yeah...you...you look nice." Clem stammers and you start to giggle.

Clem smiles as Lee sees a bottle of whiskey nearby and grabs it. Then he turns to you two and told you guys that he needed to take care of something and he should be back soon. You and Clem nodded as Lee makes it back to Chuck to give him the whiskey.

Chuck appreciated it then offered a drink to Lee, who accepted. Lee hands the bottle back to Chuck and he told Lee that if anyone wanted to drink just bring them his way and he'll share. The first person he thought of was Kenny. So he goes to Kenny and told him that Chuck had something to drink. Kenny accepted and got up from his chair goes to Chuck while Lee goes to the Map Bin and grabs the map.

Lee was walking back to the boxcar and was about to open the door when Ben said. "It was me." Lee, confused, turned and said. "Huh?"

"I was the one giving the bandits supplies." Ben admitted. "What?!" Lee said, shocked. "It's all my fault." Ben said with regret. "What for? Why the hell would you do this?" Lee asked him, angrily. All the deaths that happened within a day: Carley's, Katjaa and Duck's, they were all Ben's fault! "They said they had my friend, that he was with them. By the time I realized they didn't it was too late....they said they'd kill me. Kill all of us. I'm sorry, Lee." Ben said.

Lee was too shocked to say anything but he told Ben that he needed to keep it to himself for now because if he said anything to Kenny, there will be trouble. Ben slightly agreed and Lee makes his way back to you two.

As he walks in, he turns to Clem and said. "I want to talk about Savannah."
Clem nodded and said. "Me, too." Lee pulls out the map, sits down and said. "And what we're going to do when we get there. We don't know what to expect---the city could be bad or totally under control. The thing is, the three of us, we're a team, you know? And a team needs a plan. Aside from everyone else, when this train stops the three of us should know exactly what we're doing."

"A plan. I like it." Clem agreed.

"Me, too." You said, nodding.

"Ha, good. I think we should look for your parents, Clem." Lee said.
"Really?" Clem asked, shocked but also hopeful. "Yeah. You need to know if they're okay. And, well, if they're not, what happened to them." Lee replied. "I'm sure they're okay." Clem said. "Yeah, it's best to stay positive." Lee said, hoping that the last voicemail he heard back at Clem's house wasn't true.

"That's what dad always says." said Clem. "Let's look at the map. If we can figure out where they were we can start there." Lee said then he looks at the map and points at a spot on the map. "It looks like we'll come right through town if there's nothing on the tracks to hold us up. Now, we've got a good chunk of Savannah here. What do you think?"

"They always stay in the same place when they go there. It's uh...hmmm." Clem started to say as he starts to think. "Hey. Don't worry, we'll figure it out. Have you ever been there?" Lee asked Clem. "Once." Clem replied.

"Well, think about it---there are alot of hotels on here, but read this map and maybe it will jog your memory." Lee said as Clem thinks for a moment.
"They've got really tasty desserts. It's called the M...M something...Mar..." Clem said. Lee points at the edge of the map and asked. "Is this it? The Marsh House?"

"Yes, that's it!" Clem exclaims. "So we'll head there." Lee said. "Yes!" Clem said, happily, as you smile between them. "You think we have a good plan?" Lee asked. "I think it's very good." You said as Clem nods then he asked. "Can I...tell my parents? You know."

"Sure, go ahead. All right. How do you two feel?" Lee asked. "Good." You replied. "Better. I'm glad we have a plan." said Clem. "And both of you are good shots." Lee said. "Thanks." You and Clem said, in unison.

"I guess we should see how far--"

"OH, SHIT! HOLD ON EVERYBODY!" Kenny's voice shouts, frantically, and Lee holds on to Clem, who holds on to you, as the train starts to slow down and stop.
