Chapter 8: We Need To Talk About Duck
You took a seat on the couch, pulled your knees up to your chest and wrapped your arms around your legs as you stare blankly at the wall. You felt broken and empty....your whole family was gone. You didn't know what to do or think.
Clem sat next to you as he gave you a concerned look. "(Y/N)?" He said, quietly, but you don't respond. "Give her a moment, kiddo." Lee said, kindly, to Clem. Clem looked up at Lee just as Katjaa said. "Lee, a word, please?" Lee looks down at you and Clem before he makes it up to the front.
"What's up? Is Duck feeling all right?!" Lee asked with concerned as he looks between Katjaa and Kenny. Katjaa lifts up Duck's shirt to reveal a bite on his stomach. "What the fuck...." Lee said in shock. "Happened during the raid." Kenny replied.
"Stop the RV, now. What is he turns?!" Lee asked. "I don't see any signs of that. He is tired. His breathing is fine." Katjaa replied but Lee knew she was lying to herself. "We don't think they just turn. That guy we dragged out of the woods had to full-on die." said Kenny. "He might be fine." said Katjaa, hopeful.
"Guys..."
"What else is there to do?!" Katjaa shouted over Lee. Then she frowns and said. "We thought you should know."
"Not that you've ever afforded us that type o' luxury." Kenny growls under his breath. "Anyway, if you could tell Clement and (y/n) we would appreciate it." Katjaa said to Lee. Lee looks over at you then back to Katjaa and said. "I don't know if she can handle another bad news. She just lost her mother."
"I know. I just...." Katjaa started to say but she couldn't figure out what else to say. Lee frowns then nods as he makes his way back towards you and Clem. He kneels in front of you and he gives you a worried look. You move your eyes to him and he noticed there were more tears forming in your eyes.
Suddenly, you lean forward and hug Lee as you began to cry. Lee hugs you back as he tries to calm you down by patting your back and hugging you, tightly. Clem moves over as Lee sits down between you two and Clem hugs up to him on his left side while you lean on him from his right side.
Lee looks down between you two then sighs as he gives you two the bad news. "Duck is bitten." He said and both you and Clem look up at him in shock. "He got bit by a walker trying to escape the motel." He said. You look away from him as Clem said, while looking down. "I don't feel good."
"What about my mom?" You asked in a soft quiet voice. "There's nothing to say. It was horrible." Lee said and you nod. "I'm glad I have you two." said Lee. "Me too." Clem said as you nod. "I heard you outside my treehouse that day and thought about dropping a hammer on your head." Clem said and you make a small smile as Lee said, in a sarcastic tone. "Hmm. That's nice."
"I didn't though." said Clem as he smiles up at Lee. "Thanks." Lee said and you and Clem started to drift off to sleep.
The next day, Lee startles from his sleep as he just dreamed that you two came back as walkers and attacked him. He looks down to see you and Clem clinging onto either side of him, sound asleep.
"We got something up ahead." Kenny calls out. Lee looks between the two kids then gently places you on one side of the couch and Clem on the other side then gets up and walks up to the front. "Dammit. Road's blocked." Kenny said as he slows the RV down. "Now we gotta deal with this." He said as they see some train carts blocking the other side of the road.
Lee jumps out of the RV after Kenny stops the vehicle. Kenny and Ben follow Lee and look at the train. "Is there any way to get around it?" Ben asked the two men. "Doesn't look like it. On foot, maybe. Can't really afford to do that now." Kenny replied.
Lee looks around the woods and said.
"This seems like a safe area. All this brush will stop anything from creeping up on us."
At that moment, you and Clem, after waking up from your sleep, walk out of the RV and both of you saw Katjaa and Duck get out. In your opinion, Duck looked horrible. He looked like he could puke at any moment.
"Why don't you and I go look around?" Ben asked Lee. "Yeah, everyone else relax." Lee said as he turns to the others then kneels down to you and Clem and said. "I need you two to stay close to Kenny and Katjaa, okay?" You and Clem nod at him as Katjaa speaks up. "Lee, if you come across anything to drink, if there's a dining car or something. I think Duck's a bit dehydrated."
"It's a freighter, hon." Kenny corrected her before he turns to Lee. "Be careful in there." He warns.
"What, you think there might be something dangerous inside of an abandoned locomotive?" Lee asked, sarcastically, before he stops and muttes. "Hadn't crossed my mind." Then he begins to looks around the freighter.
Then he walks up on the boxcar and opens the door and saw that it looked like someone was living inside of it.
There was paper and boxes and a mattress and there was a chair. He and Ben began to look around where Lee found a map that he thought might be useful to see where they are heading. He looks up and saw a bottle of water and makes a grab for it.
He walks out of the boxcar and towards the freighter where there was engin compartments on the side. He opens one up and flipped the engin switch but nothing happened.
He shuts the door as he goes to the Cab door, only to see a walker inside.
He pulls out his gun and opens to door but the Walker doesn't move. He walks closer inside only for the body to flop forward and not move at all.
He moves the body off of the chair and saw that half his head was missing. Lee looks up to see that there was a hole in the window, which told him that this guy had got his head bashed in the window.
"I don't think this guy came back...." Ben remarked as Lee looks down at the control station and saw a light blinking on one of the buttons. Ben smiles and said. "Push it."
"Are you fucking serious?" Lee asked and Ben smiles and said. "Here!" And he pushes the button as they hear a noise. "It's just the brakes." Ben said, folding his arms across his chest.
"Okay, I'll give you that one." Lee said.
"This fucker works?" Kenny asked, happily, as he enters the cab. "Seems like it." Lee said as Kenny sits in the conductors chair. "I'll be damned. How the hell do we get it movin'?" He asked. "I don't know, ask Mister Amtrak over here." Lee said, nodding towards Ben.
"No clue." Ben said as he goes to remove the dead body. Lee holds up the map to Kenny and said. "We found this in the boxcar back there." Kenny takes it and looks at the map in shock.
"Whoa, is this what it looks like?" He asked. "I think so." Lee replied. "This hoss will take us right to Savannah. A hundred tons of steel. Put a thousand walkers between us and the ocean and we don't have to give a shit! I can't believe it!" Kenny exclaimed in excitement.
"What about Duck?" Lee asked Kenny.
"What about him?"
"We can't act like nothin' happened to him." Lee said.
"We can't act like he's dead either." Kenny remarked.
"Okay. Fair enough." Lee mutters.
"Try to get this thing started. There's gotta be some sort of....manual or somethin'." said Kenny. "Ha, I don't know about that." Lee said. "That's the spirit." Kenny said as Ben comes back into the cab. "Ben, if you can keep an eye on the others, I'd appreciate it. I'm going to make sense of these controls." He said as Ben frowns then nods as he makes his way out towards you, Clem, Katjaa and Duck.
Lee looks around the cab to find anything that could help them with the train until he saw a notepad that said Engine Startup. That's it! He thought as he goes over to it but his happiness didn't last long as he saw that the paper was torn. He sighs as he gets a closer look to the notepad and noticed that he could see the indentations of the writing on the paper.
Then he remembered what you did with the leaf on paper yesterday. He walks out of the cab and makes his way to you guys. But first he goes over to Katjaa and hands her the bottle he found. She thanked him then told Lee that Duck was allergic to bees and that was her way of coping with what's happening.
Lee stood up and walked over to you and Clem. "There's a notepad on the train. Do you have any pencils or anything in your pack?" Lee asked you. You shook your head and said.
"No. I wish. Maybe in the RV? What do you need it for?"
"There used to be something written on the notepad that I need to know about." He replied to you. "Well, if you're not using it, I'd take it. I'm out of paper and there's all sorts of new leaves around here." You said and Lee smiles then heads to the RV. He enters and looks around until he saw a pencil in the cupholder by the driver side. He grabs it, exits the vehicle and heads back to the cab.
He walks over to the notepad and runs the pencil over the paper and was now able to see the instructions.
He told Kenny he could now see the instructions and was about to start it up. He walks over to the console behind him and followed the instructions. Then he walked outside to the engine compartment on the side of the train and moved the switch to the left then the right.
At that moment, the engine come on. Kenny was jumping for joy at this and
Lee warns him that the train was loud but Kenny told him not to worry about and enjoy their moment. Lee shakes his head as he walks into the car with Kenny. Kenny offers him to push the throttle and he moves the throttle but the train jerks, like it was stuck on something. Kenny asked Lee to go look and Lee nods as he leaves.
He walks over to the boxcar and climbs inside then goes over to the other side to see if he missed anything. He goes to his left and see that the car was attached to another car with a couple pin but there was no way he could pull it out on his own.
There's got to be a better way to do this. He thought as he makes his way back into the boxcar then over to some of the compartments where he found some tools hanging on the inside of the doors. He grabs the spike remover and heads back over to the pin.
He shoves the remover on the broken lift for the pin and was able to get the pin out. Lee smiles as he shouts. "Hey, Kenny! We're loose!" Then he makes his way inside of the boxcar.
He looks at mattress and boxes until he heard a deep voice ask. "You touch any of my stuff?" Lee jumps as he turns around to see an older man standing behind him. "I took the map of the train routes." Lee replied as the man walks up to him. "That's fine, you can have that." The man said.
"Really?"
"Yeah. I got 'em all up here." The man said as he points at his head. "I guess it's not worse for wear. Name's Chuck. Charles if you're fancy."
"Lee." Lee introduced. "That your crew outside?" Chuck asked.
"Yeah." Lee replied.
"And the guy up in the cab?" Chuck asked.
"Him too."
"I saw you walking through here and thought about scaring the pants off of you. But I couldn't force myself to do it." Chuck said, honestly.
"You're still kinda freaking me out." Lee said.
"Train folk'll do that. Already met everyone outside; they all warmed to me right quick in direct sunlight." Chuck said as he jumps out of the car and goes over to you and the others.
Lee follows closely as you and Clem smile up at him. "You met Chuck." Clem said. "Yeah....I did." said Lee. "It's so nice to meet someone normal for a change." Katjaa said with a smile. "He gave us candy. Ben, too!" You said as you point over at Ben, who was eating a box of candy.
"What's your game, man?" Lee asked Chuck.
"Keepin' alive." Chuck replied.
"That's not bad."
"I like it."
"You met Kenny?" Lee asked. "Sure did. Man shares my love of the road." Chuck said. "That's for certain." said Lee as Duck starts coughing. "I'm awfully sorry your son's not feeling good." Chuck said to Katjaa. "I appreciate your concern." said Katjaa.
"Well, with a little TLC I'm sure he'll be fit as a fiddle in no time. And I can offer y'all whatever I got, although it ain't much." said Chuck as Kenny walks out to the rest of you. "Thank you....we'd like to do the same." Katjaa said.
"Why don't we hold off on..." Kenny started to say until Katjaa said. "Stay with us, we'd like the company." Chuck nods then goes to sit down on a log and picks up his guitar and plays a little tune.
Lee goes over to Kenny and tells him that the trains loose. Kenny nods at him then he tells the rest of you guys to gather your stuff and hop on the train. Everyone got their stuff and climbed into the boxcar.
Kenny looks at Duck, who was looking worse, and Lee tells him that they can't ignore it but Kenny was in denial and said there was nothing to talk about and he stomps his way back to the cab. Lee follows him and he pulls the throttle and the train begins to move.
You make a small smile as the train stopped but frown as you look over at Duck. Clem places his hand on your shoulder and you go to hug him and close your eyes, trying to stop yourself from crying.
Afterwhile you were sitting down, your knees pulled up to your chest, as Clem sits next to you. Both of you looking right at Duck as it seemed he kept looking worse and worse as the minutes passed on. "Got to be hard on ya, eh? Three adults taking care of four kids..." Chuck said then he turned to Ben and said. "No disrespect, son." Ben glares at him then turns his head away from him.
"It is." Lee replied.
"Your son is something else." Chuck said, gesturing to Clem. "He's a survivor. Has been from day one." Lee replied. "Takes after his dad, looks like." Chuck said then he nods to you and asked. "Is she yours too?"
Lee shakes his head and said.
"She....she just lost her mother. So...I'm gonna take care of her as well." Chuck frowns at this just as Duck starts to cough up blood. "LEE! Lee. I need you. Right now. I need you to go get Ken." Katjaa said, worry and fear dripping in her voice.
"What's...."
"Would you get that off of his face? My hands are full here." Katjaa said as she nods towards the rag in front of her. Lee gives a concern look to them as he grabs the rag and wipes the blood off of Duck's face. "He's out of time. We need to stop this train." Katjaa said.
"Okay."
"Please." She begs and Lee nods as he makes his way to the cab, towards Kenny. You stare at Katjaa and Duck and couldn't help but feel bad for them. Sure they had questionable morals, but they were nice people; they didn't deserve this.
Then you started to think about your mom. God, did you miss her! You wish she was here, hugging you and telling you everything is okay and everything will be fine. But....she's gone and you just had to learn to accept it. You didn't like it but it's the world you're living in now.
A few moments later, the train began to stop and you fell backwards onto Clem. "You okay?" Clem asked as the train stopped completely. "Yeah." You said as Katjaa stands up then jumps off of the car and lays Duck down on the floor. His skin was turning gray and he was starting to breath heavy.
She frowns at him as Kenny and Lee walk up to her. "Ken, it's....I think it's time." She said, tears in her voice. Kenny frowns at his son then turns to Chuck and said. "The boy's been bit. In case you haven't figured that out." Chuck gives him a sad look before he turns away from him.
"Take as long as you need." Lee said to the couple. "There ain't no time left to take." Kenny said, shakily, to him. Kenny turns to his wife and asked. "What are we gonna do?"
"We can't allow him to become one of those things." Katjaa replied.
"But what if....what if he doesn't?"
"Kenny, I love you very much. I love our son more than life itself. I need you to hear me. What you are saying, that he may not turn, is foolish." Katjaa said, tearfully.
"But--"
"No."
"There's....come on, Kat..."
"If you think of one, you let me know."
"Isn't there some sort of pill, or something we can just give him...." Kenny asked his wife, desperately.
"No."
"He can just drift off to sleep, right, hon? I mean...this is our son." Kenny said, desperate. "I know. But we know it's here." She said as she points her head. "Or nothing."
Kenny runs his hands over his face and asked. "Well..fuck...just....who then? You want me to?"
"You don't have to." She said.
"I'll do it." Kenny said, his voice becoming firmer.
"No! You don't have to." said Katjaa.
"I'll do it." Lee spoke up.
"No. It should be a parent." Katjaa told him.
"No parent should have to do something like this." Lee replied to her.
"Lee's right, Kat. We can say our goodbyes and....just let that be it." Kenny said. "I don't know..." said Katjaa then she looks over at Lee and said. "Lee, you'd be doing this family a great service." Lee nods at her as she turns to Kenny.
"Why don't we take him into the forest. So Clement and (y/n) don't have to see." She said. "Yeah." Kenny replied in a defeated tone. Katjaa turns to Lee and said. "Give us a moment to say goodbye?"
"Of course." Lee said as Katjaa picked up Duck and they began to walk into the forest. You and Clem watch them leave and become worried and scared. "What's happening?" Clem asked Lee, nervously. Lee walks over to you two and decided to be honest with you two. "Duck is dying." He said.
"I know." Clem replied as you nod and said. "Same here." Lee frowns as he feels bad that you two are learning this kind of stuff at such a young age, no child should have to go through with this.
"What are you doing?" You asked Lee.
"I'm going to make sure he's okay." Lee replied. "But how....he's bitten." Clem pointed out. "By making sure he doesn't come back." Lee replied, honestly. You and Clem stare at him then looked down at your feet.
"Look, Clem...(y/n). Things will--" Lee started to say until a gunshot sounded out from the forest. "What the--" he started to say as he stands up and hears Kenny screaming. "Ben! Take Clement and (y/n) into the train! Go, it'll be fine." Lee said and he runs into the forest while Ben ushers you two back on the train.
After running for awhile, Lee makes it towards them and saw that Katjaa was on the ground with a self inflicted gunshot to her head. Kenny was kneeled next to her body, crying, while Duck was leaning against a tree nearby, still breathing heavy.
Kenny looks up at Lee, tears streaming down his face, before he stands up and grabs the gun. Both men stand before Duck and Kenny asked what were they going to do. Lee told Kenny to give him the gun and Kenny obliges.
Lee raises the gun, aims it at Duck's head and fires.
