Chapter 1: Ties That Binds
Javi opens his eyes then blinks several times when he realized that he was in a truck. How did I...oh wait! He thought when he remembered he was ambushed by these assholes accusing him of taking their gas. Then he let slip that there were more, so they took him back to the little building in the junkyard, calling out his people.
His family.
Kate, Mari and Gabe.
He did his best to protect them, by knocking out one of their men, as they hid but he was greeted with a pistol whip to the face from the leader of the assholes.
Javi gasped as he looks down and sees his hands were tied up with zip ties. He struggles against his restraints when he looks over at the driver.
"Hey--my family. Where are they?" He asked. "What did you do with my family?"
The last thing he knew was that they were hiding under the building, he prayed that these assholes didn't find them and that they were still safe.
The man doesn't reply and Javi just glares at him. "Just do us both a favor, and pretend you're still asleep." The man ordered him. "I wouldn't start talking if I were you. You're lucky we do things a certain way. I'm already tempted to put a bullet in your brain for what you did to Lonnie back there."
Javi continues to stare at him, not saying a word just so he won't get this man angry. "We still got a haul ahead of us and I'm not about to listen to y--what the hell?" The man said just as a tree starts to fall. "Stop. Stop!" Javi shouts at the man. "Ah shit!" The man exclaims as the tree lands right in front of him and he steers the truck right into the ditch.
Javi shakes his head and sees a gun on the dashboard in front of him. He looks over to see the man was knocked out, grabs the gun and gets out of the truck. The man wakes up as well then scrambles out of the truck and begins to run.
Javi chases after him then raised his gun. "Hey!" He shouts and the man stops, turns then raised his hand. How can I shoot a man when he's unarmed? Javi thought as he rolls his eyes and lowers his gun. The man smirks and runs away.
Javi sighs when he felt something on his back. He turns his head just in time to see a blade of a sword on his shoulder. "Fuck...." he mutters as he faces forward. "Yeah, all right..." then he drops his gun. "That's good. Just keep looking forward." A voice ordered. "Please. I just...I need help." He pleads as he turns his head slightly to his left.
"Well, that's obvious. The way your friend there ran off. I don't think he's likely to come back and save you." The voice said. He heard footsteps and he turns just to see a figure bend down and pick up the gun.
The figure stands up, revealing it to be a girl with short (h/c) hair and (e/c) eyes, she didn't look that old...at least thirteen or fourteen years old. She was holding a sword in her right hand, pointed right at him, and there was a gun holster, with a gun inside, wrapped around her left leg. "Okay. Now, don't do anything stupid. 'Cause I'm not a nice as you. I won't hesitate." She warned.
She moves her sword away from him and sheaths it in the holster that was strapped to her back and walks away.
"You're a kid...." Javi said in disbelief as she goes to the truck. "Wait. Did you do that? With the tree?" He asked her. "I was trying to stop the truck." She replied as she jumps down into the ditch and looks at the truck.
"Shit. He's gonna kill me." She mutters as she gets inside the truck and looks around the inside. "What do you need the truck for?" Javi asked the girl. "To drive." She replied, casually, after she found an apple and takes a bite out of it. "Put your hands up and close your eyes." She ordered as she walks back to him.
"Look, I'm the victim here." Javi pleads. "We're all victims." She snapped at him. "Oh so it's okay for you to rob me." said Javi, angrily, as she gets behind him and digs in his backpack. "This is payment. For saving you. You're just lucky it's me that saved you." She said. "Why's that?" Javi asked. "'Cause my friend wouldn't have been so nice as I have been. He probably would've shot you where you stood....or left you." She replied as she pulls out a candy bar.
"Hey, that's for my niece. She loves chocolate, more than anything. I promised it to her. Please." He begs and he could see some form of pity in the girl's eyes as she thinks this over. Finally, she puts the candy bar back into the bag.
"Keep your eyes closed and count to a hundred before you go." The girl ordered.
"Wait, just--my family. I need to get back to them. We were attacked and I don't....Look, I just need to know where I am. We were driving down the 522....and that's when we found the junkyard. They're still there. I need to get back to them." Javi said. The girl looks at him for a moment then said. "My friend might know where that is. You said you were driving?"
"In our van, yeah." Javi replied. "We'll look for my friend, he shouldn't be far from here...he's out scavenging.....and then we will take you to the junkyard. If you let us have your van. We get you there in one piece, then he and I will drive away." The girl said. "That van is our home. It's all we got." Javi said.
"That sounds like a no." She said.
"How 'bout we just find this friend of yours and he can give me directions like a normal person?" Javi askesd.
"How about she shoots you and we take the van anyway?" A deep voice asked. Javi looks over to see a boy, no older than fourteen with a blue hat with a D on top of his curly black hair, walking out of the woods behind the girl. He was at least a foot taller than the girl as he walks up next to her while she looks over at him and, for the first time since Javi's met her, she smiles at the boy. Javi also noticed that there was a scar on the boy's forhead, just above his eyebrow. "This is a better deal for you." The boy said as he crosses his arms across his chest, his eyes narrowed.
"Thought you were out scavenging?" The girl asked him. "I was...didn't find much. I was making my way over here when I heard the crash. Had to check on you to see if you were okay. Then I heard your conversation with this guy and listened in." The boy replied and the girl's smile gets bigger and her cheeks turn a slight shade of red. The boy turns to Javi and glares at him. "Let's go." He ordered as he pulls out his gun and aims it at him.
Javi glares back at the boy then begins to walk ahead, the two teens just behind him. "This really necessary?" He asked them. "We don't know you, we don't trust you, and I'm not taking any chances." The boy replied. "So it's safer for all three of us if you're tied up." The girl said.
"Look, I get it. You two are being cautious." said Javi. "Glad we understand each other." The boy mutters. "The name's Javier, by the way. People...call me Javi." Javi introduced. He doesn't hear anything for a moment as the boy and the girl exchange a look then the boy speaks. "Clement. And this is (y/n)."
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Clement and (y/n)." Javi said. "If you say so." You said as the three of you continue down the road.
Moments later, a walker comes out of the woods and towards Javi. He jumps away as you pull your sword out and slice the top half of the walker's head. Javi's jaw dropped at this as you sheathed your sword and the walkers body toppled backwards. "You're good at that." He praised but he was met with glaring eyes from you.
"Look, you two don't wanna talk, fine. But how 'bout you give me that gun back so I can at least defend myself?" Javi asked. "For all we know, you'd just turn around and use it on us." Clem replied. "You give me a weapon, we can protect each other." Javi said. "I give you a weapon, we can't take our eyes off you." You said.
"At least this way we know what we're up against." Clem said. Javi glares down at the road then looks up and stops as he sees a herd just to his left. "Muertos....the herd caught up with us." He informed you and Clem. The three of you crouch down and stay still for a moment then you three run as fast as you three could.
"Muertos...." You muttered as you two crouch walk then stopped. "What do you guys call 'em?" Javi asked you two. "Walkers." Clem replied, flatly.
"What do you call the ones that run?" He asked. "They're all fucking walkers, okay?" You snapped at him, making Javi jump at the sudden anger in your voice. "Look, Clem and I...we're just....we're not used to being around other people. Not for a while, anyway. Usually, it's just the two of us."
"Just the two of you? Sounds kinda lonely if you ask me." Javi remarks. "Well, we didn't ask you. We've known each other since this whole shit started. Besides we prefer it like that." Clem spat at him.
The three of you stand up and continued to walk on. "So who's at this junkyard?" You asked Javi. "My brother's kids...and his wife." Javi replied. "It's impressive....surviving this long. Not sure how you did it." You said to him. "Just keeping everyone together like that."
"Well, I didn't do it alone. My, uh...uh...Kate, helped. She did....most of the work, actually." Javi said. "Sounds nice." Clem mutters.
"How 'bout you? You two must have been pretty young when this shit started." Javi said as he looks over at you and Clem. "We were. But some people looked out for us, too." Clem replied. "What happened to them?" Javi asked. "Same thing that happens to everyone." Clem said, frowning, when Javi stops as he sees more walkers up ahead of you guys through the woods.
"Shit..." he mutters.
"We can't stay here." You said the you point towards the windmill up ahead and said. "There's a town up ahead. We can stay there until the herd passes. Otherwise we're walker food."
"Fine. Whatever you say." Javi mutters. You and Clem smile as you say. "Thank you." Clem looks over at you and the two of you exchange a look before Clem nods at you. You sigh then pulled out a small knife from your pocket and cut Javi's restraints. "Don't make me regret this." Clem said to Javi, firmly. Javi rubs his wrist as you shout. "Come on!" And three of you run across the woods as fast as you guys could.
