Chapter three: They're watching me
Furiously and frantically, my legs were kicking in all directions. When I kicked upwards, there was a thump. It sounds like wood... where the hell am I?! Again, I kick, but with more force. I do this until it forms a hole. Thankfully, I can finally sit up. A tingling sensation creeps up my spine, my back feels numb. I've been lying in the same position for god knows how long. I scrape upwards with my hands; with any luck I'll be able to crawl out of here in no time. My fingernails are now covered in dirt, I knew exactly where I was now, but my brain refused to admit it. No. No. No. It can't be. It's not true. Oh, please don't let it be true. I dug and dug and dug until moonlight began to drip through. Finally. I could almost taste freedom. And what a sweet taste it would be.
When I eventually was able to break free and clamber to the top of my dirt prison, my heart sunk when I realised, I still had no idea where I was. I felt the tears forming in the corners of my eyes, blurring my vision. My cheeks began to sting. Eyes like darts, I scanned the surrounding area for any clues that could help figure out where I am or how to get home. All I know is I'm in a forest, a dense canopy of forest that I know for a fact I would end up getting even more lost in. I should just stay here for a while - at least for tonight. I freeze. My eyes wonder over to a shadow, lurking behind a great oak tree. Someone is there. Staring. Watching me. I feel my eyes narrow. My feet are frozen, too nervous to move. Although my heart is beating so fast it feels like it is going to leap out of my chest, I try to hide it. I try to find my voice, try to sound threatening.
"Leave me alone, you creep!" I scream shakily, they don't move. Instead, they cock their head slightly, like they are trying to indicate they have no idea what I'm saying. I'm about to scream it again when they raise their hand. They point at something behind me. When I don't turn my back on them, their hand begins to shake. This creeps me out, so I do turn around - wanting to hide my fear. It's only then that I notice the sign behind me. I stop. What?! No. No. It can't be. Please, God, no! I look down at my shaking hands and realise how fragile and pale they've become. I didn't believe until now. I couldn't believe it, nor did I want to.
Standing over me was a stone that read "hear lies Morana Hunter - beloved grandchild and sister." No. Surely, I was seeing things. This isn't right. I couldn't be. I wasn't. But deep down I knew. Deep down - I knew I was dead.
