Chapter 16 | A good ending
"I told you, it's not me! Let go of me!" A highly pitched voice was heard as the women was dragged out by two people in uniforms.
"Miss?" Julia had a confused look when she saw her waiting outside. "Why are you here?"
"I came to pay a visit," Adelina answered her while maintaining a distance between them, "I wanted to see the person who was responsible for this mess...But," her expression hardened, "Who knew it was you all along. Charges for assault, bribery and fraud, right?"
If smartphones exist then, Adelina would have filmed the look on her face. An opportunity missed, I guess.
"Y-You. It's you, isn't it!" the frantic woman struggled to reach for the red haired girl with her face flushed from anger. Her arms were quickly pulled back much with much more force by the officers. "You must have said something!"
Julia then switched her attention to the people on the streets and shouted, "Somebody, please, help me!"
Although her desperate call for help attracted the public's attention for a moment, no one said anything as they casted a brief glance at her and went on their way.
Adelina smiled and send her off with a wave of her hand. "Have a nice trip."
While she was watching them leave, she felt a tug on her dress and curiously looked down. To her surprise, she saw a child. Upon seeing a familiar face, her eyes lit up in recognition.
"Hi, you're the kid from the other day...right?" she tried smiling in a welcoming manner, bending down to reach his height. He was the same boy who cried in front of her. "Just now, older sister send off a horrible caretaker."
He looked at her for a while and hugged the rabbit doll he was carrying even tighter. He didn't seem to believe her yet. "Did you really, really defeat the bad people?"
She nodded, "They won't be able to come here again."
A wide smile broke out of his face with his missing teeth visible.
"Thank you."

"Adelina, do you want to stay with them longer? I heard there was going to be more kids coming in today. Maybe you can meet them," her mother suggested when she saw Adelina return to the carriage. "We still have some time left before lunch."
Adelina answered with a shake of her head, "It's okay, I've meet the new workers and they're much better than the previous ones."
"Besides," she added while the coachmen began making preparations for the carriage to leave, "we shouldn't leave Theodore from waiting too long. He must be bored waiting at our place."
"I wonder about that," her mother smiled, acting as if she was keeping a secret of her own, "I think he enjoys the wait."
Adelina stared at her mother incredulously. "I doubt it."
She received a chuckle from her instead.
"Were you able to find the friend you were looking for?" her mother asked curiously.
Adelina took a while to reply when she heard the question. She wasn't sure what her mother meant by that, until she realised they were coming from her own words.
Oh.
She was talking about Eleanor.
Adelina may or may not have lied to her about the 'friend' part.
"Unfortunately, I didn't," she said, before finishing her sentence in a tone filled with certainty, "I don't know where she lives or what she is doing, but I'll see her again someday."
She knows she will. Their meeting was bound to happen anyway, in a few years time.
I wonder how is her life like right now?
--------
The carriage finally left.
"Everyone! Let me introduce you to a new friend," the new staff announced enthusiastically before gesturing the girl to come closer to the group of children.
When she didn't move from where she was standing, the staff spoke to the girl gently. "It's okay, don't be scared. They are all excited to see you."
Slowly and hesitantly, the blonde haired girl stepped forward. Her head was still facing the floor as the girl presented herself in a timid manner.
"Hey, what is your name?" One of the kids asked, finally noticing her presence.
They couldn't help but stare at those bright, blue eyes when she lifted her head up.
"H-Hi, my name is Eleanor."
