8. Homecoming
She debated all night if she wanted to go to King's Landing. She tossed and turned on her mattress, wishing she was out on the sand with Grey Ghost but she had spent much of her evening with little Aegon.
Her room wasn't too far from the nursery so when he started crying, she walked the halls until she found him.
"Aw, little Egg, it's ok," she spoke softly and picked him up. He was so tiny and yet chubby. His face was rounded with a small chin and his wisps of silver hair were standing with his bed head.
"My sweet little brother," she whispered and bounced him in her arms. "In my eyes, you're my favorite Aegon in this family. I'm glad Mother named you Aegon because the other Aegon is a real cunt."
"Vis!" Rhaenyra whispered with a smile. "I would prefer his first words to not consist of cunt."
Visenya smiled as her mother sat in the rocking chair, Daemon behind her.
"I don't see why not. It is true, about the other Aegon." Daemon added.
Visenya looked back down at Aegon and kissed his forehead as he started to calm down.
"You'll be a great mother, Visenya. It doesn't matter how much you dislike your husband, nothing compares to the first time you hold your child. It's an experience I can't describe."
Visenya looked over at her and then back down at the babe in her arms. He was starting to gurgle and smile, something she didn't expect. Joffrey never smiled when she held him. But then again, things went to shit after Joffrey was born.
"Does he have an egg?" She asked.
"Yes, it's already hatched. Just yesterday morning, in fact."
"Stormcloud," Daemon added. "I'm going back to bed." He shared a nod with Rhaenyra.
Visenya watched him leave then turned her attention back to her mother. "Wasn't that Syrax's last egg?"
"For now, yes. I'm sure my next pregnancy there will be more. I had always wished you would have a she-dragon so that your own dragon eggs could be placed in your children's cradles. Your children riding the children of your dragon. Quite majestic."
"I don't believe that, you never wanted me to have a dragon."
"I had hoped back then that your egg would hatch. I never understood why yours didn't and your brother's eggs did." Rhaenyra spoke with a yawn.
"Because I was made for Grey Ghost. I don't care about the egg anymore. Everything makes sense now. This egg-in-the-cradle tradition didn't even start this past generation or so, I am happy I was able to claim a fully-grown dragon. At least in King's Landing, I will have something to do."
"You will have more to do, Visenya," Rhaenyra said.
"I know, I know. I will be a wife and produce more Valyrians."
"No," Rhaenyra shook her head, "You will have more to do than that. You will be right there in with the Greens."
Visenya set Aegon down when she realized what was being asked. "No."
"You are my best defense, Visenya. This is the only reason I want you there. We all have a role to play and this is yours."
Visenya scoffed. "This is why you apologized and want me to go early."
"No, that was my idea," Daemon returned, leaning in the doorway. "You should go early to establish yourself."
"NO!" She yelled and crossed her arms over her chest. "I won't be some spy for you."
"Oh please, what other purpose will you have there? Aemond was so disgusted with you as children there will be no reason he will occupy your time. This is your purpose and we are your family. We are the ones that care for you. You are useless to them, you are nothing more than the girl that mutilated the prince. You are a stupid little girl to them. But you don't have to be with us. You can do something useful for once."
"Daemon," Rhaenyra sighed.
"Visenya, you are weak. No one else will say it so I will. You are weak and spend all your time on your dragon or in your books. Those books will not get you anywhere. So for once, do something." Daemon sneered.
Visenya backed away from him, pushing back the tears. "Stop it," She mumbled. "Stop being mean."
"Then stop being weak!" He yelled.
She cowered away from him and into the wall. "You are no father."
"I don't want to be your father, Visenya. That connection you crave makes you vulnerable. The longer you seek the missing father figure, the more it will hinder your strength. You have no father, he is dead and you are alone. What are you going to do about it?"
Rhaenyra stood with worried eyes. "Maybe this is too far, Daemon."
"No! She lives in denial. She can't accept that her father is dead. Well, news flash Visenya, he's gone and he is never coming back. So tell me what you're going to do, Visenya."
She brought her knees up to her chest and sobbed. "Stop it!"
He grabbed her chin. "He's DEAD! What are you going to do?"
"I'll be a spy!" She cried. "I'll do it, I promise!"
Daemon backed away from her. "That's how it works, Nyra. Coddling doesn't."
Rhaenyra looked at Visenya and knelt next to her. "Visenya, I -"
"Don't!" She snapped and crawled back. Little Aegon started to cry from all the commotion and Rhaenyra battled between which child to comfort. But it wasn't a decision, not to Visenya. Rhaenyra could have stopped this but didn't. So Visenya made the decision for her easier and ran from the room to her own.
She pulled a bag from her closet and packed the essentials she would need. She was going to demand to be taken to King's Landing on the morrow, she couldn't spend another day here. Alicent may have hated her but this was too much. She spend another day here she was liable to throw herself from the tallest window on the tallest tower.
Was the morning came, a ship was already prepared.
"Figured you would want to leave as soon as possible," Rhaenyra said gently and tried to rub her shoulder.
Visenya shrugged her off. "I will be above the ship on Grey Ghost."
She walked past her mother, shifting much of her blame. It was mostly on Daemon but she had allowed it. She allowed him to break her down because they all thought she was weak. She was not going to stay weak.
It was a short sail between the island and King's Landing. Grey Ghost stayed above the ship and circled around once they reached the docks. He landed right by the docks and let out a roar that cleared the surrounding stations. "Good boy," Visenya whispered and rubbed his snout after she dismounted him.
Rhaenyra and Daemon were only there to escort her to the wheelhouse but they would not go to the castle. "How did they know?" Visenya asked about the welcoming party of guards waiting by the wheelhouse.
"You were going to come one way or another," Daemon rose a brow. "Remember your role. If you don't, I would hate to have to find a suitable consequence."
Visenya rolled her eyes and approached the guards and smiled at the one Kingsguard that was present. "Ser Harold."
"Princess Visenya. It is a pleasure to have you back."
She got into the wheelhouse and was shocked to see Ser Larys Strong waiting for her.
"Dear Princess, what a pleasure to see you."
She clenched her jaw and watched him. Rumors about this man had arisen that he was the queen's personal advisor but who knows what else he was? She didn't trust him.
"Thank you," She responded curtly.
"The Queen sent me to greet you. I am curious though why you chose to come back before your first bleed. Care to enlighten me?"
Her face turned to beat red and she shook her head. "I will be honest, I did not want to come back," She fumbled, trying to lie convincingly. They think you are stupid. Use it. "But I have no friends on Dragonstone. I am lonely and my only friend was ever Princess Helaena and I have heard she just welcomed twins. I would rather be lonely surrounded by hundreds of people than with brothers that don't speak to me."
Larys leaned back and she couldn't tell if he believed her or not but the lie felt exhilarating. Maybe this was all spying was. Lying. But you had to be good at it and she'd never practiced.
"I must admit, the princess will be happy. She has asked about you. Now with the twins here, she finds herself lonely as well. You will be a good girl and keep her company?
The name made her extremely uncomfortable but she nodded with a small smile. "I would love to."
"Good."
And just like that, she had emerged into a dangerous game.
-
There had been no welcoming party at the castle, just a Lady-in-waiting waiting to show her to her chambers. "Good afternoon, Princess. You have been given different chambers due to the switching around the Queen has done. I will show you to your new room, and get you unpacked and ready for supper."
"And what is your name?" Visenya asked.
"Brella, My Lady."
Visenya nodded and noticed she was probably no older than twenty, a young beauty.
Brella showed her to her new chambers and not much was different. It was a bit smaller but she remembered that soon she would be married and forced to share a room with Aemond. The thought alone made her gag and get sick. There was no way she would live til then. At least if she were dead she wouldn't have to face any punishments from Daemon.
"The Queen had a dress sent up for you in preparation for supper," Brella said from the wardrobe, pulling out a grey dress with green stitching and embroidery. The dress made her want to gag more than sharing a room with Aemond.
"Brella, from now on, green is not my color. Red and Purple compliment me more."
Brella tried to hide her smile and nodded. "Yes, Princess. I will make note of it."
"Brella, would you tell me if anyone asked you to spy on me?" Visenya asked.
Brella's eyes widened. "I will - I would."
"Has anyone asked?"
"Everything I do is being watched. My entire family works for Lord Borros Baratheon. When my father was caught stealing, Lord Borros wanted to murder him and my brothers. I volunteered to save them and instead I was sold to the labor force in the city, just waiting for a job to open. This is my first job here in the city."
Visenya walked up to her and grabbed her hands. "You don't have to be afraid. I will not be vile or unkind to you. Is your family safe in Storm's End?"
"I know my brothers and mother were spared but they never gave me word on my father."
"Well, if you need anything at all, all you need do is ask. I don't have many friends here and I would like to be able to trust you. If anyone asks you to spy on me, let me know and I will offer your family safety."
Brella nodded and pulled away to turn Visenya around. "Deal. But for now, we must get you ready for this dinner or the queen will have my head. I must admit, your complexion is too fair for green. If any green would suit you, I would say more of a seafoam green, not this nasty fall green."
She undressed Visenya and got her situated in her new dress, tying up the back with enough give for her to have room to breathe. Her breasts hadn't fully developed enough for the corset to be adjusted and she was still small, no need in squeezing the life out of her.
Brella braided her hair and a guard came to escort Visenya to dinner. She followed silently and held her hands behind her back, hoping that if she could look confident then she would feel it.
"Visenya!" Helaena gasped when she entered the hall. Helaena ran to her and wrapped her arms around her niece.
"Aunt Helaena," Visenya smiled and melted into the taller woman. Helaena had gained curves where she hadn't any before. Childbirth had made her breasts swell and taken away the petite frame she had but if anything, she looked more beautiful this way.
"I can not wait for you to meet the twins. And hopefully, soon they can have a cousin to grow up with!"
Visenya chuckled nervously and turned toward the room, only seeing Aegon and Alicent.
"Visenya," Alicent stood and gave a forced smile. "Welcome back."
"Thank you, my Queen. Uncle," She acknowledged Aegon while barely looking at him. He smirked and raised his glass.
"I was surprised to hear you wanted to return so soon. Since Daeron has been living in Oldtown, Aemond had traveled for a bit between his studies. He just traveled there and shan't return for two moons or so. But the King eagerly awaits to see you," Alicent said.
She might have sighed in relief too loud when she said Aemond would be gone. "I can not wait to see my Grandsire. I missed him dearly while I was away."
"Yes, of course. I also hear you have claimed a wild dragon. Has he been dropped off at the Pit?"
"No," Visenya answered fastly. "He is very tame. Most likely he will be at Blackwater Bay. He doesn't like people and he likes to be close to the shore. He mostly eats fish."
Alicent nodded, looking more at ease. "Well, I have had your favorite meal prepared in celebration of your return. Is goat still your favorite?"
"Yes. On Dragonstone fish is the main menu. Gets a bit tiring after a while."
Helaena reached for her hand and smiled. "We can go flying together now!
"That sounds marvelous," Visenya said with a smile. Although forced, Alicent was being kind, Helaena was still the same, and Aegon was quiet. If it continued like this, she would never return to Dragonstone.
you CAN'T tell me you don't get the vibes from Daemon that he uses fear conditioning.
