62. Fields of Fire

Visenya and Grey Ghost made it by dawn before the camp was even waking up. She spotted Sunfyre in the treeline, away from the camp and away from aerial view.

As she circled around, the soldiers began to wake up. "Your Queen has joined you!" A soldier yelled.

Grey Ghost landed beside Sunfyre, letting out a powerful roar that shook the ground. As Visenya got down, she let out a groan as she felt the soreness between her thighs. At this moment, she wished she had a saddle on Grey Ghost.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Aegon yelled, running to her and grabbing her shoulders. "Are you okay?"

"I am fine, you dimwit! What were you thinking, Aegon? This was not the plan!"

"I know, but the general of the Tyrell army thought this was a smart move."

"Aegon!" She groaned and hit his shoulder. "I promised your wife you would make it back without a scratch. Sunfyre is not a large dragon, many of theirs would be large enough to bite his neck off!"

"They have scorpions," He frowned.

"I can't lose you, Aegon!" Her eyes were wide with fear and he frowned, scratching his arm. "I know this war is only just beginning but I do not know how much more I can lose."

"You won't. Now Grey Ghost is here. And he is far bigger than Sunfyre." He pulled her into a hug and sighed. "I am so sorry, Visenya, I know I haven't spoken much to you lately."

"It's fine," She said softly. "You smell like dragonfire. So Duskendale was a success?"

He nodded and pulled away. "Yes, it was light work. You should go talk to the men, seeing their queen here might boost morale."

"Maybe," She said and looked back at the camp. Men were lining around the tents just to confirm it was truly her. She gave Aegon a pat on the shoulder and made her way over to the camps.

"My queen!" A man ran forward, kneeling before her.

"Are you the General here?" She asked.

"Yes, Your Grace. Lyonel Tyrell is but an infant, so his mother rules as Regent. She appointed me to lead the army. She originally did not want to join the war, she wished to remain neutral. But the death of Princess Laenora swayed her. So she joined our overlords, House Hightower, in following you."

"So does that mean Gwayne Hightower is here?" She asked.

"No, he is on his way to the capital with the other half of the Hightower army. We have the other half."

She nodded and looked around. "So you must be Lord Redwyne?"

"Yes, Your Grace."

Visenya looked at the closed walls of Rook's Rest, wondering if Lord Staunton could see her. He didn't know Sunfyre was there, but everyone knew Grey Ghost appeared. Visenya walked past the tents and made her way closer to the gate.

"Lord Staunton, if you can hear me, this is your last chance to yield to me. If you do not, you will learn the meaning of Fire and Blood." She knew he had troops behind those doors, but he knew he was outnumbered.

"Have it your way," She mumbled and walked back over to her troops. "Any word back on if he's received a response from Rhaenyra?" She asked Lord Redwyne.

"Nothing has arrived. I am beginning to wonder if she is going to send anyone at all. With Daemon at Harrenhal, no other dragon rider has been seen. You have sent us Aegon and two dragons aided in the Riverlands. You have been very gracious."

"We have dragons. No sense in not using them. And you are fighting for me, it is only right I join the fight."

The sun began to shine through the trees and she saw an outline past the treeline. Then a loud roar got everyone's attention. As it got closer, Visenya made out the form of Vermithor, The Bronze Fury.

Aegon would have never survived that alone.

Once Hugh Hammer got sight of Visenya, he made his way right to her. She stepped further on the field with a smirk on her face.

"Your Grace, get back!"

"He can't hurt me," She said.

Vermithor's large wings flapped as he hovered over the ground. "Surrender or die, Bitch Queen!"

"Whatever the Kinslayer promised, I will offer double. I will kill you, bastard."

"High words from a woman who is about to die!" He yelled. "Dracarys!"

Fire engulfed around her, burning the few that were standing too close. She noticed an army behind him through the flames as her clothes singed and burned away. After a few moments of fire, Vermithor ended and Hugh's eyes were wide in horror. Visenya didn't give much thought to her naked state, she felt powerful.

Sunfyre appeared behind Vermithor, his talons ripping into Vermithor's wing membrane. Hugh turned to see Sunfyre and took off into the sky.

Visenya looked as the army of soldiers that followed Hugh stormed her army, and she ran to a dead man whose clothes weren't completely burnt. She paid no mind to the blood and ash on the clothes as she put on a loose tunic and breeches.

Fire and Blood.

She mentally called for Grey Ghost and he landed right in front of her and she quickly mounted him.

Vermithor and Sunfyre dove closer to the ground, the larger dragon sending his flames to her soldiers. "Dracarys!" She yelled, watching Grey Ghost kill many men below them.

Vermithor turned his attention back to Sunfyre and started thrashing at the smaller dragon. Bronze and gold do not mix, Helaena had said. Grey Ghost took off towards Vermithor without a second thought. The Bronze Fury grabbed onto Sunfyre and threw him off his flight path, sending him hurdling toward the ground.

Grey Ghost, rejuvenated with a new fury and violence, sunk his talons into Vermithor's underbelly and ripped his scales open. Grey Ghost, much like his rider, had given way to the rage within, his scales darkening with all the souls he'd taken. Visenya hadn't thought about the change in his appearance but it made sense.

Grey Ghost bit into Vermithor's neck, ripping away some of the flesh. Blood began spraying from his neck as he cried out in pain. Visenya was smirking at Grey Ghost's seeming victory, but Vermithor's maw was still thrashing around. Visenya hadn't noticed until it was too late that Vermithor was about to clench his jaw around where she was sitting on Grey Ghost's back.

Just as Visenya began to see her life flash before her eyes, a golden ray slammed into Vermithor's body, sending them both falling to the ground. Visenya waited for the fear in her chest to subside before she realized Sunfyre and Vermithor were tearing each other up on their way down.

Sunfyre and Vermithor slammed into the ground, and Grey Ghost dove down to where they landed. Vermithor was dead on sight, his eyes rolling to the back of his head. Visenya rushed down and ran over to see Hugh coughing up blood. Visenya grabbed his Warhammer from him, bearing her teeth. "I warned you."

"They said your dragon was weak, not fit for battle," He groaned.

"Everyone has been underestimating us our whole lives. But thank you for being the first dead Dragonrider."

"You sure about that?" He smirked and looked over at Sunfyre, who was not moving.

She let out a groan as she lifted the Warhammer and brought it down on his skull. The sound of his skull breaking open gave her enough satisfaction to throw the weapon down and run over to Sunfyre. She looked at the golden dragon's milky white eyes, her heart mourning for such a gorgeous dragon.

"Vis?"

Visenya ran to where she heard Aegon's voice and fell to his side with a scream. There were burns on his face and a puncture wound in his abdomen, but his dragon was still on part of his body. None of his body was moving and she knew he was paralyzed.

"No, no, Aegon! You dumb idiot, why did you have to do this?!" She yelled, her eyes burning with tears.

She pulled him into her lap, brushing his hair out of his face. "Hey now, I saved your life." He said with a pained chuckle.

She clenched her eyes shut, letting the tears roll off her cheeks. She reached for his hand and shook her head. "We need to get you to a maester."

"I wish I could squeeze your hand. But I can't move anything, Visenya."

She nodded, cupping one of his cheeks. "Please. Don't leave me, Aegon. You are my brother, my friend."

"If it was going to be anyone, I am glad it was me," He said softly. "I am merely a fool in your court. Everyone else has a place by your side. I am proud to have died saving you."

"Aegon, please, what about Helaena and the children? You were doing better, you were beginning to be a family."

"I suppose if I did it right, Helaena should be pregnant with my child. She will be okay, she never needed me. I am so sorry, Visenya. I wish I could bring her back for you."

Visenya's eyes widened. "You are a hero. For me, for your whole family."

He nodded. "For Laeny."

Aegon drew his last breath and his eyes went lifeless. Visenya let out a scream, hitting the ground in a fit of rage. The battle behind her still raged, as did her own. She clenched her fists as she walked back to Grey Ghost with tunnel vision to blood.

Grey Ghost took flight once she was mounted and flew above the enemy troops. "Dracarys!" She cried out with a broken voice. He began to burn what was left of their soldiers before flying to the gates of Rook's Rest.

"I warned you!" She screamed. Arrows started flying at her but Grey Ghost started to burn the gate, letting everyone burn or fall to their death. The wooded gate burned down, and Grey Ghost landed on the stone walls, some of them crushing beneath his weight.

"Lord Staunton!" She called out, setting her sights on the stone castle. No one revealed themselves, no one came out and claimed to be the petty lord. So she commanded Grey Ghost to breathe as much fire as possible. The air got so thick and hot that things started falling and exploding around the castle, the stones and motor beginning to crush under the weight of the fire.

Visenya cared little for the cheering below her, her head was racing and her anger was still intense enough to blur her vision. Or maybe that was the tears.

Not Aegon. Not him too.

The soldiers below her celebrated their victory and Grey Ghost flew back over to Sunfyre, tilting his head. Visenya got off, standing next to Aegon's body. "Indigon zirȳla hen sīr kostan gūrogon zirȳla arlī lenton," She spoke to her dragon.
*Push him off so I can take him back home.

Grey Ghost managed to nudge Sunfyre enough for Visenya to pull Aegon's body away.

"Your Grace!" Lord Redwyne called. Grey Ghost snarled as he approached and the lord backed away in fear.

"Cut Vermithor's head off and take it back to the capital. I must return my brother so we may prepare his funeral."

Lord Redwyne nodded. "Of course, Your Grace."

Flying back home was a short ride as Grey Ghost carried Aegon's body between his talons, careful not to crush or pierce him. Visenya was surprised to still see Vhagar by her hill. She figured Aemond would have left as soon as he found out she'd gone missing. He was probably mad at her.

Grey Ghost landed outside the Red Keep and Aemond was running out the doors, rage on his face. But once he took a look at her, it was replaced with worry. During the fight, her clothes became further torn up and the dragon fire between all three had left very little of her clothes.

When she stepped down, Aemond rushed to her side. "You are practically naked! How dare you run off, Visenya? What the fuck were you thinking? Aegon could of -" Then he paused. "Where is Aegon."

Visenya turned her attention and faced her dragon. Grey Ghost gently set down Aegon's body as a crowd formed behind them. Most of the small council was outside, along with all their siblings. Helaena let out a gasp as she noticed Aegon's body. Tears started falling from her cheeks, but she did not reach hysterics.

"He died protecting me," Visenya mumbled, still in shock. "Rhaenyra sent Vermithor and some troops. They are all dead."

"Vermithor would have ripped apart Sunfyre with no hesitation," Rhaenys said. "At least this way, they have lost their largest dragon."

"And we lost Sunfyre," Lucerys said.

"Visenya," Aemond said in a softer tone. "Why are you naked?"

"I allowed him to burn me. Everyone saw me emerge from the flames."

"They will all know now. I thought you didn't want them to?" Aemond asked.

"Let them," She spoke, "Let them fear what I really am. No more hiding."

I know, I know. This is your time to yell at me and I am fully prepared.
