27. Second of Her Name

two chapters in one day??? who is she???

One of the side effects of pregnancy was with her own already being difficult, she struggled with sleep and relaxing. Her nights were restless and full of tossing and turning.

Something that Aemond was getting used to. He pretended to be asleep so that she wouldn't feel guilty but with each toss and turn, his heart hurt just a little more. This was proving to be a difficult pregnancy and it was taking a toll on her, something he blamed himself for. He should have fought harder to make his mother wait. Starting so soon would only cause issues. If she had been on her blood for a year, she could have been okay even for fifteen. But none of the facts were working in her favor.

When they got back from the market, she was too exhausted for anything else and declared it was time for an afternoon nap. There would be a small ceremony before dinner for her legitimization and that would take even more of her energy.

As Visenya lay sleeping, he longed to sleep next to her. Every night proved to be difficult for him, sleeping so close yet so far from the woman he longed to wrap his arms around. She claimed she didn't dream but she spoke in her sleep. He wanted to hold her and protect her.

And today only made him want her more. It may have been his idea to win the favor of the common folk but it was she who did so well. The children loved her and everyone stopped to watch the kind mercy of Princess Visenya Targaryen.

He knew Visenya had a love for rings (she loved to anxiously twirl them even more) so when he saw the sapphire and ruby ring, it was a sign from the gods. Visenya herself was a ruby. Red was the color she looked so divine in and he knew once war broke out, it would be Rhaenyra's Blacks against Visenya's Reds. There was no better item to represent Visenya. Red and ethereal.

He watched the rise and fall of her chest as it seemed she was finally able to sleep. Her bump was growing and he was shocked he hadn't noticed before he figured it out but then again, he didn't see her naked. He always gave her the privacy she requested. But he kept his excitement a secret. Finding those eggs was the most excited he'd felt in a while.

Aemond didn't have a squire, he was not a knight, but he did have a shadow. When he ventured from the castle, Ser Arryk would follow him to guard him. With the king always in bed, some of the Kingsguard were sent off to guard other members of the royal family.

"Where exactly are we going, My Prince?" Arryk asked.

"My wife's dragon seems to be acting strange and while she is sick, I am going to check on him. That dragon means more to her than anything ever could."

Ser Arryk nodded. "You Targaryens and your bond with your dragons have always left me in awe. Rumors say you can feel your dragons."

"If you make the bond correctly. Unfortunately, I did not. I am still working on that connection with Vhagar. But if you want to see the best example of it, Visenya is the one. She can feel him, their thoughts are one, and even every memory is shared. It is the most complex relationship but it makes her concern for her dragon quite profound. And since I made a vow before the gods to protect my wife, I protect the dragon she holds dear."

"Is she the first to claim the mighty Grey Ghost?" Arryk asked. Aemond was not surprised he knew less of the history of Grey Ghost, he wasn't in history books like Vhagar or Caraxes.

"She is. Grey Ghost has been a mystery. Some say he hatched during the reign of King Jaehaerys, or some say he was hatched along with Syrax. No one knows for sure because he was always so skittish around people. He flew in the clouds, undetected thanks to the matching grey of his scales. But one day, a broken princess sad on the dunes of Dragonstone and he chose her."

"The dragon approached Princess Visenya?" Arryk asked.

Aemond nodded. "He chose her. A single girl out of many candidates over the years. Hells, Rhaena Targaryen was on the island at the same time and even she has no dragon to this day. Visenya is different."

As Aemond and Ser Arryk approach the abandoned hill that Vhagar made her home, he walked up to his mount and pet the scales of her snout. She looked tired, and Aemond could feel a hint of exhaustion as he tried to connect to her. He felt her exhaustion and annoyance ... Grey Ghost had kept her from slumber.

There was a makeshift cave on the side of the hill and he could see smoke coming from the opening. Aemond rested his hand on the pommel of his sword and slowly approached, smelling dragonfire. Suddenly, Grey Ghost burst through the opening and took off into the sky, with more energy than Aemond had ever seen. He could hear a slight whimper as he flew whatever, whatever had just happened clearly caused him pain.

Aemond looked back to the cave and entered, wishing he had brought a torch. He had only seen this behavior once before when Dreamfyre started nesting for Helaena's first pregnancy. But that would be impossible considering that Grey Ghost was a male.

But then again, Aemond didn't understand fully the dragon's anatomy. Vhagar was a girl because long ago she had laid stone eggs but not since. Meraxes had laid eggs, as did Dreamfyre. But as far as Aemond knew, it's not like male dragons had cocks so he didn't know how they were sexed.

Or maybe once they bonded, the needs changed to the demands of their riders. Syrax laid eggs when his sister was pregnant, Dreamfyre when all of her riders became with child, and Vhagar laid the stone eggs when Visenya the First became pregnant with Maegor. Their dragon facts weren't even set in stone.

But all of that changed when Aemond entered the cave and saw two fresh eggs. Grey Ghost was believed to be male and had never laid eggs. All of that in consideration, if he was laying eggs ...

With Ser Arryk outside the cave, Aemond smiled. Visenya was pregnant and he was going to be a father. Visenya was carrying his child, their heir. He could finally watch her grow with child and become a mother.

Every time she held one of Helaena's children, his heart ached for her to hold their very own. A child with her full cheeks, their violet eyes, and maybe his jawline. But the child would be theirs.

But it meant something different once he realized the moon tea failed and this child was a product of their rape. How could Visenya ever love a child that she didn't want to make? And surely all of her spottings weren't good, but at least the intense cramps weren't babe-related and more so due to the bond and nesting of Grey Ghost.

Either way, he had to get back to her. He picked up the eggs and walked out to Ser Arryk. "Do you have a satchel?"

"I do," He nodded and pulled it open. He was careful to place the eggs inside and looked at the guard.

"We have to hurry to the Dragon Pit and put them on hot coal."

Ser Arryk nodded as they mount their horses and raced off to the dragon masters. As he handed the indigo and sapphire egg to the masters, he let himself think about which egg would be claimed for his child, trying not to doubt its hatchings like the eggs of he and his wife.

Aemond and Visenya still hadn't decided which egg would be placed next to their baby. He was just hoping the babe was a boy so that it would make Visenya's claim stronger. She would be queen, and Aemond would make sure of it, but they needed as much help as they could get. He personally wanted the purple egg for the babe only because he had never seen a purple dragon.

"Father," Visenya started to mumble in her sleep. Aemond's eye shot over to her and her tensed face. "Father, please." Her voice was turning into whimpers.

It couldn't have been Daemon, she never called Daemon her Father. Father was reserved for Ser Laenor. Which meant she was having yet another nightmare about his death.

"Come back."

"Visenya," He said softly in hopes to wake her.

"Father!"

"Visenya!"

Her eyes flew open and they met Aemond's, blinking away the signs of sleep from her eyes. "What happened?"

"You were having a nightmare. I am guessing about your father because you kept saying his name."

She let out a sigh and wiped her eyelids. "I wish I could remember them. I would love to see him again, even just in my dreams. Some memories begin to fade with time."

"If it is his death you dream of, best not to remember that. Keep the good memories."

"Have you ever killed someone, Aemond?" Visenya asked.

Aemond tensed up, his mind going to a specific memory he tried to forget. But he nodded. He couldn't lie to her. "I have."

"Details?" She asked.

"It was while I squired for my uncle Gwayne while I visited Oldtown. One of the tougher choices he taught me was enacting the King's justice to traitors. He was just a boy though, he deserved a trial."

"What did he do?" Visenya asked.

"He was a rogue soldier from the Battle at the Stepstones. He fought for Dorne with the Triarchy. You could tell he was young, probably forced to fight. He was so scared but Gwayne made it very clear that he was to be beheaded and that it was my time to learn. I took it without any second thoughts but it still makes me wonder," He explained.

"Your Uncle Gwayne sounds like a piece of work," Visenya scoffed.

"Altogether, he was weak and a coward. He was also lazy. I wish Daeron could train under someone more fitting."

Visenya began to sit up and Aemond walked to her side of the bed, offering her his arm for support. She grabbed his forearm and pulled herself into a sitting position. She suddenly smiled to the confusion of Aemond until she grabbed his hand and placed it over her stomach.

The second Aemond felt that baby moving around, his whole body relaxed. That was his child, it was alive and well in there. It was a high-risk pregnancy but maybe it was still possible. How could it not be? He already loved that child more than his own nephew and niece. There was only one person he loved more than this child; Visenya.

His ruby. He fell even more in love with her, the woman that was carrying his child. "Wow," He whispered, meeting her eyes. She had a smile of her own as they held eye contact. He sat on the bed next to her, keeping his hand on her belly.

Her breath was heavy as his face was next to hers and the urge to capture her lips between his was strong. So he started moving slowly, inching his face closer to hers. Possibly just an inch away, he was stopping himself from lounging forward. So he waited, his lips less than an inch away from hers.

And just when he thought they were going to share a kiss, Brella knocked.

If one more person interrupts me, I will kill the whole castle.

"Princess, it's time to get ready. I have your dress prepared!"

Visenya sighed and pulled away from him, realization dawning on her face at what was about to happen. "We should really get ready, Aemond."

-

Aemond thought she was trying to kill him with the red dress she wore. The cleavage line was low and there was barely a back on it. He didn't know if she was trying to make a statement or what it was, but he couldn't stop staring. Her hair was braided with a ruby circlet on her head; the image of a true Targaryen princess.

"Ready?" He asked.

She nodded and took his arm. "I am ready. Maybe."

"Just breathe, Visenya. This is for you. It's not like all the lords of the realm are gathering for this. Just the small council the family that is here. You will be the most beautiful woman in the room."

He could tell she was trying to hide a blush. "This dress makes my bump look bigger."

"I won't complain," He mumbled as they walked the halls. When they entered the throne room, Otto was on the throne and Alicent was next to him.

Get off her throne, Aemond thought with a frown. But then again, he would rather see his brother on that throne over Otto. He had never been fond of his grandsire.

Visenya approached the steps to the throne and curtseyed. "Hand."

"You have gathered here to seek legitimization from the king have you not?"

"I have," Visenya nodded.

Aemond watched with a smirk. Step one. Visenya had always been a Targaryen whether she had the name or not. She claimed an unclaimable dragon, she wielded a conqueror's name, and she had more fury than anyone in this room. She was the product of two true-blooded Targaryens. Despite his hatred for his eldest sister and uncle, they had the blood of the dragon. The likes of Rhaenyra and Daemon were not possessed by any other save for their daughter. None of Aemond's siblings could claim the fire held within their uncle.

Aemond was so deep in thought he missed Otto's speech. "Then I now pronounce you the trueborn daughter of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daemon Targaryen, born before they were officially married. Let it be known that Visenya Velaryon is no more."

Aemond smiled, matching Visenya's smile.

And let it be known that she is the true heir to the Iron Throne.
