[77] Decoding The Break In

Weird blue light everywhere, blinding really. Would someone just give me a pillow to block out this terrible glow? I covered my eyes but it was of no use. How exactly terrific...

Someone helped me to sit up since it was quite useless in me trying to do that all by myself (thanks a bunch to whoever it was). I just don't get why ailments have such fondness for me. Why can't I just live a normal witch's life without visions, headaches, insomnia and forms of such paralyzing stupors?

Gradually the blue light faded and my eyes adjusted to the surroundings. Okay... So yeah I get it that I'm in the common room but why are all these people crowded around me? Looks like the whole of Gryffindor House is here.

I looked around taking in the situation and figured that I was on the couch in front of the fireplace covered in blankets. By the looks if it, I probably fell asleep in the common room instead of the dorm.

So what? No big deal at all.

Then why are all these people eyeing me as if I finally woke up after a thousand years like some Sleeping Beauty?

"Miss Weasley, would you kindly explain what you were doing out here so late at night?"

Professor McGonagall?

I straightened immediately. She sure has that effect on all of us. And her usually stern expression was, if possible, more stern than ever. God, no, what did I do now?

"I... I don't remember?" that was the first thing popping in my mind and I simply voiced it out.

"Try and remember what you were doing before you came in the common room," she said.

Well...

Now that's really weird but there seem to be those black gaps again as I tried to recall. And the black gaps would only appear when I tried remembering any of my childhood years, it never happened to the current memories.

Do I suffer from Alzheimer now as well?

It did took me a while to consider and then... "Professor, I don't know."

To my surprise, instead of asking me further to assess my sanity, she nodded, "at least tell us what day it is today."

That's not hard at all. "We have a Quidditch match against Ravenclaw today. And by all means, we must win it. So... It's Thursday, right?"

Fred spoke up, "all that was completely okay when you couldn't remember what you were doing in the common room but I honestly didn't expect you to say this."

Wait, why not? "Alright then, why don't you tell me what's wrong with what I said?"

George remarked, "we won that match yesterday and we also had a celebration on which you had insisted along with Bell and Johnson."

What? I don't even remember playing the most important match of this Season! I was staring at both of them rather baffled, waiting for someone to kindly bestow an explanation.

"That settles it. A memory charm has been used on her. I must alert the Headmaster at once while all of you stay in the common room until or unless I tell you to come out,"Professor McGonagall stood up and went out from the portrait hole.

The Gryffindors began to disperse as well and soon that left only me, Fred, George, Angelina and Katie together.

"You guys owe me a long explanation," I stated.

The twins nodded, "of course. But first we have to go give Ron's blanket back. In the meanwhile, the ladies here will tell you about the most awesome Quidditch victory we had up till now that you unfortunately forgot."

Ron's blanket? How can I have Ron's blanket? Until or unless he decided to act brotherly and lend it to me. And I honestly don't see that happening any time soon though.

Fred and George folded the blanket and left. "Leave the match, just tell me what happened last night," I turned to face Katie and Angelina.

"Black attempted to attack Harry last night," Angelina spoke.

What? That's absolutely ridiculous. "Are you kidding me?"

"Unfortunately not," Katie remarked, "what makes you think that he wouldn't or couldn't do that?"

I shook my head, "what I meant is how could he break into Hogwarts again? Definitely the security was tightened after that incident with the Fat Lady. And there are Dementors stationed all around the castle. Besides, how could he come to the boy's dorms?"

Angelina resumed, "he had the password and Sir Cadogan let him in."

Oh... Should have been obvious. Sir Cadogan never really looks around, does he? But that makes it twice more complicated.

However, the twins returned sparing me the trouble of voicing out a dozen more questions, "too bad, you started the story without us."

I spoke up, "that doesn't matter. You just tell me the details. What happened exactly?"

Yeah, I know its pretty much inviting them all to talk at once but thankfully I do have practice at understanding four people talking at the same time. It sent a slight twinge to my heart that hurt a bit.

Four people all together talking at once...

"To cut a long story short, Black broke into Hogwarts and came to the tower. He gave Sir Cadogan the password who let him in without suspecting."

"Neville had written this week's passwords on a piece of parchment which fell into Black's hands so it made it undoubtedly easy for him to get inside the common room."

"He then went to the dorms. Ron even saw him standing over him with a knife."

"The curtains in their dorm were slashed through."

"Yeah, you should hear Ron telling an over exaggerated version to the first and second years. How he saw Sirius Black standing over him with a knife, how he screamed heroically saving the others and how Black ran away with his blanket."

"The blanket which was on you, apparently."

"Yeah that bugs me to be honest."

Alright, now that I have listened patiently to their explanation, it's my turn to tell them what exactly is bugging me. "So what you mean to say is that the whole time this episode occurred, I was in the common room. Apparently asleep."

They nodded in affirmation, "exactly."

Smells a bit fishy in here...

"I may have a few helpful assumptions," Hermione came and sat down with us. Great, we absolutely needed someone like her at the moment to solve the mystery.

She picked up a copy of A History Of Magic from beside me which I haven't even noticed before, "so this is what you were doing in the common room. Reading."

Yeah, I guess. I did borrow it from the Library.

"And you've marked Chapter 47; Witch burnings in the 14th Century."

I nodded encouraging her to continue with her theories.

"So this is what I think might have happened," she clasped her hands together as she resumed, "we know Kat doesn't sleep much so she must have come out to the common room to read. She probably must have seen Black entering and suppose that even if she came after he had h=gone to the dorms, still she would have seen him leaving. It's more than just obvious. And since Black didn't want to leave a clue or a witness, so he must have obliviated her. I don't know if you had noticed but the chairs by the portrait hole were out of place and the curtains have fallen down as well as if someone was roughly pushed against that wall. Keeping those upheavals in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if Kat had put up a bit of a fight which was repressed. Look, there's a slight scratch near her jawline, more like a graze or a cut."

Oh really? Sure enough, but it wasn't exactly a cut, just a slight scratch.

"He must have forced your mouth shut," she resumed this time talking directly to me, "and since Black only had a knife so he must have used your wand to cast the Memory charm. A spell reversal on your wand could confirm that. And since it already is in Professor McGonagall's custody so that would be well taken care of. As to Ron's blanket, there's a possible explanation for that as well. Black is very clever and he must have thought that if he just placed you on the couch and covered you with that blanket it would seem as if you were just asleep. The only hindrance in his well thought out plan was Ron waking up and screaming his head off."

Now that's honestly very impressive. "Well done, Sherlock," I complimented her.

Finally Katie spoke, "he could have killed you, Kat, and we wouldn't have even known."

I shook my head, "he wouldn't."

Fred spoke, "and how can you be so sure?"

"Do you really underestimate him or something?" George added, "he killed 13 people in a crowded street. He wouldn't hesitate in using the killing curse again."

Hermione, for once, agreed with me, "no, she's right. He wouldn't use the killing curse. Do you honestly never read Hogwarts: A History? Some curses are banned and aren't effective when used in the school premises. Why else do you think Black brought a knife with him?"

Angelina nodded, "he really is very clever then."

Hermione spoke, "of course he is. That's why he made his escape when Ron screamed. Because even a Dark Wizard like him wouldn't dare face Dumbledore without his wand. He obviously doesn't want to go to Azkaban again."

Now these words were starting to make my head ache. Dark Wizard? Sirius?

"Earth to Kat," George snapped his fingers in front of me but I simply couldn't let go of all the questions that were clustering up in my mind. If Sirius had really had an encounter with me, couldn't he recognize me?

And if he did, why would he use a memory charm on me? Or perhaps he didn't even remember who I was... They say that the Dementors strip you of each and every happy memory you have.

It sent a chill down my spine and I shuddered. Did he really forget all the amazing time we had together?

I finally snapped out of those painful thoughts when Professor McGonagall entered. She came directly towards us, "Miss Weasley, follow me please."

I shakily got up but she took my arm and steadied me. I took one last glance at my friends as she led me out of the common room. The twins shot me a thumbs up each and after that the hole closed.
