[20] Visions Through A Crystal Ball

If you entirely neglect the detention, this day has gone pretty awesome so far. And well I'll have to get used to being stuck in detentions as you see that I can't be easily separated from the twins and being really great pranksters I think most of our time is going to pass in detentions.

Wait till Perce finds out that I lost five hundred points just on my first day. But I'm not going to be the one telling him since... I do enjoy his company, okay, and I don't want him to be cross at me for a whole year.

According to our time table next class is Divination. We climbed the really steep flight of stairs to the North tower which happened to be the tallest building at Hogwarts. The Divination classroom was at the seventh floor. A lot of students had arrived by now but at least the class hadn't started yet so we couldn't possibly be considered as latecomers. As we were among the last ones to enter we took our seats at the back.

The whole classroom was buzzing with chatter as we had this class with Ravenclaws. I've noticed that Gryffindor and Ravenclaw get along very well together. Anyhow a while later the Professor came out.

"Welcome my dears," her misty voice spread in the room causing people to lower their voices (if not being completely silent; the virtual silencing charm was only possessed by Snape), "together we shall all look into the future. Claim our destinies, destine the fates and know what is beyond the knowing!"

The statement was meant to be over enthusiastic but to us it only seemed like a poor attempt at being energetic on her part. I don't blame her to be honest. Maybe that's her idea of an impressive first impression.

She looked quite a strange creature though with a thin stringy frame and bushy brown hair. Her eyes must have been green but I couldn't be sure due to the large spectacles covering her face as well as the dimmed lighting of the classroom.

"So you may have chosen to study Divination, the most difficult of all magical arts. I must warn you at the outset that if you do not have the Sight, there is very little I will be able to teach you. Books can take you only so far in this field," she spoke, "those who succeed however possess the Inner Eye; which is something not of many of you have. But no worries... You can do well if you pay attention. Look closely, expand your Sight and believe in the power to see the unthinkable!"

Okay... Percy might have found this class interesting but I... Ah well she's loads better when compared to Snape and Lockhart.

"Today we will be starting with Crystal Gazing," she began and her mysterious eyes scanned the whole class, "we must have done this last year but couldn't due to some fateful circumstances which I had predicted from the start. And ah I see we also have a new student." Her eyes now locked with mine.

I shifted uncomfortably under her fixed gaze. She slowly walked towards us.

"Welcome my dear girl," she took my hand in her thin bony ones.

"Uh... Hello?" I replied or rather asked. I noticed that she wasn't blinking at all. God knows I was in no mood for another strange circumstance to happen and I certainly did not want her to predict something bad.

"You have the eyes of a Seer," I think she was giving me a compliment.

"Thank you, I guess?"

She was too focused on me for my liking, "oh and one word of advice; beware of falling. Your fall will change great destinies, so just be cautious, my dear."

Falling? As in falling through what? God knows.

Anyhow she went back to the front, "as I was saying before... Crystal gazing is an art that depends deeply on concentration."

She asked us to note down the things she would tell us since the whole chapter was in the previous book (grade 3). Maybe Percy's right and I would really take a liking to this subject and develop a talent in it.

Fred whispered, "you have the eyes of a Seer? Honestly?"

George added, "well then instead of calling you Green eyes we'll call you Seer eyes."

I gave them both a stern look which meant, "not very funny."

But nothing ever has an effect on them.

"Beware of falling through that crack on the eighth staircase," they chanted, "you'll have broken bones for a week! That is sure to change great destinies."

I raised an eyebrow, "how can destinies be changed due to one fall?"

Fred remarked, "well if you have forgotten; you help us in pranking. If you fall and get broken bones great destinies of marvellous pranksters will get affected."

Oh come on. But anyways they do have a point. We were all given Crystal balls and told to look into them with great concentration.

"I don't see a thing," Fred muttered.

"Its plain smoke," George complained.

They are right. Even in my Crystal there was nothing but plain smoke or fog. Everything inside that ball (that is if anything was present) was very unclear. Let's see what she says about this.

I raised my hand, "Professor?"

She gladly came towards us, "yes, dear?"

I pointed to the Crystal, "even if there is something in this crystal, it is quite smoky. Do you know what that means?"

Her brow furrowed, "smoky... Mist, defected clarity, the essence of the unknown!"

Uh... Excuse me? She bent to get a clearer view, "my dear child, it is complicated! Look into it and expand your Sight. Don't you see the black form in your crystal? Don't you? Concentrate, my dear, concentrate!"

With that she moved on to the Ravenclaws. Black form... No please I don't wanna go in there again.

"Concentrate Katerina," the twins teased and chanted in a monotonous voice, "trust your vision... You are almost into the future!"

I mumbled, "okay, shut up now."

They laughed, "you must see something, Seer eyes."

I shoved them hard. They just won't stop teasing me now. Seer eyes, indeed.

But then something flickered in the crystal. All of a sudden something silver flashed by inside the transparent ball. I bent forward to look closely. The mist was lifting and I could almost make out two forms entangled with one another.

One silver, the other black. I tried to concentrate more deeply as they had begun to blur. Something surely was going on. Fred was calling me but I gestured him to wait. Something... Something strange was happening. Something unusual.

"You would never want to do this," I heard a sharp clear voice. It was so clear that I almost knocked off the crystal. Surely no one beside me or around me had spoken.

"You would never hurt me," not again. I can't believe what's happening to me. I think I'm going insane. The voice was... Familiar. As if I had heard that before. The images in the crystal were swirling. I could barely feel the twins shaking me. But all I could see was the crystal and all I could hear was those voices. It was an odd sort of trance, something which I had never experienced before.

And then a sharp smell rouse to my senses. Blood. A lot of blood. I could practically see the red dancing before my eyes, the swirling silver mist in the crystal now dissolving into a bloody whirlpool. And then a deafening howl erupted and I covered my ears.

That nightmare.

I had heard these voices in that nightmare in which I had seen a wolf and a black dog.

"Kat are you okay?"

Okay? Not in the least. The voices faded and the crystal was blank again. I blinked twice to clear my vision. Fred and George's faces gradually registered in my mind. I was staring up at them not knowing what to say.

"Did you see something, my dear?" I felt someone holding my hand and turned to see Professor Trelawney. I nodded my head but by now my body seemed to be working of its own accord.

"Excellent," she clasped her hands together, "we have a Seer in our midst! I had known that ever since you set foot into the classroom. And those eyes. Seers have such brilliant shades of green eyes."

I spoke, "professor I... If you don't mind will you allow me to leave earlier? Now? I... Uh, I'm not feeling well."

She nodded, "of course my dear."

Fred and George stood up, "we're coming with you."

I told them to sit, "it's okay. I just... I'll go meet Perce. Don't worry I'm fine."

But to be honest I wasn't fine. Not at all.

But then maybe I was just tired?

I decided seeing Percy was the best idea and after thanking the professor I left the class and made my way towards the library.
