[02] Goodbye Asylum

Today was not at all different from other days. The same boring routine and the same boring people. I was feeling so dull and typically good for nothing. I wonder if they would let me paint my room. I know if given permission I would splatter it with red, orange, and yellow paint.

I don't know why I'm so obsessed with these colors. But it just feels right each time I associate these colors with myself.

I was doing absolutely nothing when the door to my room opened and the nurse Sally entered. Now this was something that rarely ever happened. Sally usually came with an army of doctors whenever I was angry so they could lock me up in the prison cell.

"Hello," I said politely, "I think you've got the wrong call. I'm not in an explosive mood today, Sally."

She nodded fervently and handed me some clothes. I gave her a questioning look because honestly that never happens. I mean these were colored clothes, not the white asylum uniform. Okay well, the clothes she bought were white but not the starchy white. The shirt was a nice cream white with little splashes of blue color.

I think I like it. It's been long since I had ever worn something like that.

"Get dressed quickly, honey," she spoke, "and then we are going to the reception. There's some folks who want to meet you."

Folks? Wanting to meet me? The first thought that came to my mind was, "is it Mum and Dad?"

Well... Apparently not. She hurried me towards the changing room. I wonder who's down there to meet me.

After I got dressed, Sally took me downstairs to the reception. I was nervous I admit. I didn't know what would happen to those people who wanted to meet me. And throughout the way, Sally kept lecturing me to behave and not to unleash the devilish powers I possessed in front of those people.

I honestly hope they adopt me though and take me away from this sickening place. But, unfortunately, this is not an orphanage. This is an asylum. And chances of getting adopted are pretty thin here. I mean no one in their senses would adopt a kid who has spent the major part of life in an asylum.

Like six years in an asylum are bound to send you down the crazy hatch.

We entered the small reception room. Now that was the only room in this whole asylum that was not white. It had a darker color scheme of midnight blues and black shades. And it had curtains with blue shaded prints on the windows.

I saw a man and a woman sitting on the couch and seeing me they stood up. Oh please don't run away. They looked quite nice though; the red-haired man with dainty crooked spectacles and the plump motherly woman with equally red hair and a nice sweet smile. I liked them instantly. Sally shoved me as a signal for me to say my greetings.

"Good Morning," I said cheerfully. I got another shove in the back and this time it felt as if Sally didn't approve of my greeting. Well... I am being well-behaved and civil, aren't I? But those people didn't seem to mind it much to my pleasure.

"Morning dear," the woman took me warmly by the hand, "I'm Molly and this is my husband, Arthur."

Oh God, now when I think about it nobody ever shook hands with me. And nobody ever has been that friendly. Well, precisely due to the fact that people were afraid of getting harmed by the fireworks I could create with just my bare hands. I consider it a talent, to be honest, but most of the people don't think the same way as me. Not most, nearly no one thinks the way I do.

"Nice to meet you, Molly. Nice to meet you too Arthur," I know I am being a lot cheerful but hey what difference does it make? And they seemed really nice so yeah, I felt like being positive for once and being as behaved as I could get.

Arthur asked Sally and Miss Akulya to leave us alone. Surprisingly though, they obliged and went out. Now let's see what the big thing is. Arthur addressed me, "I'm Arthur Weasley and I work for the Ministry of Magic in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department. Me and Molly are sent here to fetch you and take you to the Wizarding World where people like you and us live without any fear of being put in an asylum."

I was confused. Magic? Wizarding World? Ministry? Muggle Artifacts? Honestly... "I'm sorry but I don't understand," I told them.

Molly nodded, "it's okay, dear. We will explain. We know you have powers and it's completely normal to have them. We know weird things happen around you but it's not something to be worried about."

I brightened up instantly, "you mean fireworks? You know what, I can create fireworks. Honestly."

She smiled, "yes. Fireworks and other magical things that you can do. You're not abnormal, sweetheart, you're a witch."

I know my eyes must have gone round like saucers and who knows maybe they would just pop out from amazement, "a what? Witch? Really?"

Arthur let her do all the talking. I guess he's a bit shy. But I could notice that he was quite interested in the telephone on Miss Akulya's desk.

"We are here to take you where you belong. There are a lot of people who can do magic. And there is a school called Hogwarts which will teach you to control your magic and also teach you other beautiful kinds of magic. It's an interesting world. We are here to adopt you and take you with us to our home. You will live with us as our own daughter and we'll make sure you start school as soon as possible," Molly explained.

I was speechless for a while. It is such a lot to take in. It's like an old dream coming true.

"Will you come with us?" Arthur asked.

I can't express how overjoyed I am, "of course I will. This is so cool. I... I don't know what to say. I... I'm so happy."

Out of happiness, I hugged Molly. For a second I felt like I had done something wrong and it would make them change their mind but I was quite surprised and relieved when she hugged me back.

"Now it's time for you to say goodbye to this place," she said.

Well yes of course. Goodbye, asylum. Goodbye, Sally. Goodbye, Miss Akulya. Goodbye, everyone. Oh my goodness, I've never been this happy in ages. It's like I'm finally getting the freedom I so wished for.

"Oh and one last thing," Arthur spoke and I turned in alarm. Pray to God he doesn't change his mind. "What's that... little box?" he asked pointing to the telephone.

Oh right.

"It's a telephone," I replied enthusiastically, "oh you know, it's what we use to communicate with each other. If I dial a number, there's a Central Exchange which transmits the electric signal to the place whose number I've dialed. That place must have a telephone too you know and then they pick this receiver up and we can talk. Simple. It's a lot like a telegram."

He looked at it in amazement, "wonderful... Wonderful indeed. And what exactly is a telegram?"

I smiled at him, quite eager to tell him about that too if not for Molly who intervened.

"Oh yes that's all very fabulous, Arthur, and she will explain about telegrams later," Molly spoke, "but I think we shall get going now. Right, honey?"

I nodded in reply.

They had filled out the form for being my official guardians and Molly gave it to me to take one look at it (just to see if they had got my name's spelling right). "And there was a space for your birthday date too but we just don't know... Besides all this paperwork confuses me a lot," Arthur told me.

"Oh, no problem at all. I'll fill that," I replied. Now when I think about it, I had never even cared to remember my birthday. 4th of December; a lot like the other days of my life. But hopefully, all this asylum thing is going to end now.

They asked me to bring my belongings. Well, I didn't have a lot of things to call my own.

All my worldly possessions included a sketchpad, colored pencils, a necklace that my mom had given me as a birthday present, and a few clothes. I didn't pack the white uniform though. I hope I won't ever need that again. Picking up my rucksack, I followed them outside the asylum after waving goodbye to anyone who may care to notice.

Goodness me, I was stepping out of the asylum into the beautiful world after so long. I had even forgotten what the day looked like. And trust me it is beautiful.

Oh, how I missed you, dear Sun. And you too, birdies. And of course, the beautiful green trees and colorful flowers.

It was a sight to behold and I was getting quite jumpy from excitement. I joyfully tottered behind them and chattered happily like a bird who had just gotten free from her cage.

When we reached the deserted forest Arthur showed me a little shoe which was placed on a tree, "this is what we call a Portkey. It will take us where we want to go in a much shorter time than any train or car. It will transmit us like those eclectic signals you were telling us about."

Oh right, he meant electric not eclectic.

It was pretty cool I mean being able to transmit humans just like wireless signals. But then there must also be a receptor at the other end to receive us but I guess this thing works in a whole different way than normal scientific inventions do.

Oh yeah, you guessed it right. I'm a big fan of science. Science is like my very own cup of tea. And I'm extra curious in case you forgot to notice it by now. Thankfully, we weren't deprived of education at the asylum although it was mostly based on self-studying.

"And how does it work?" I asked.

"By magic, of course," Molly replied and took my hand. Arthur took Molly's hand and from the other hand, he grabbed the Portkey.

"Now here we go. Whoosh," he spoke, and true enough everything started spinning around us. I felt dizzy and tightened my grip on Molly.

After what seemed like ages, the whirling stopped and I opened my eyes. We were not standing in the forest. Instead, we were standing in a greenish place. Right in front of us was a strange-looking house which seemed as if a lot of boxes were stacked on top of each other.

"Welcome to the Burrow. It's not much but it's our home," Arthur announced.

I was staring at it in awe and amazement, "wow... It's so beautiful."

Molly spoke, "We live here. And soon you will be meeting our family. Oh, there they are. Come on, let's go give them a surprise."
