Chapter Fifty-One
Throughout the night, the group of four took turns with their shifts and ended up getting much more sleep than they thought they would. The nights must've been longer wherever they'd been transported to because if the clock on their comm-links were correct, it took the sun thirteen hours to rise in the distance. Molindi wasn't complaining though, and neither were the others; they hadn't had this much sleep in one night in weeks.
"There it is," Molindi grinned when the first rays of sunlight filled the sky and cast a blood-red hue onto the jungle below. Despite the terror she'd felt when her eyes first made contact with the greenery that blanketed the horizon, that fear seemed to have evaporated over night and replaced with a sort of excitement.
Maybe it was because she opened up about her past and therefore could let some of her fright go, or that Axel knew what truly plagued her memories and gave her a feeling opposite of being alone like she always thought she was. Either way, now the commander was ready for anything and practically jumping out of her boots to get a move-on like a little kid about to go on an adventure.
"Alright, now the plan is simple," General Skywalker began when the four had gathered together in a small circle to go over what their next move would be. "We stick together at all times. You three don't have weapons which means I'll be the only person with any kind of real self-defense sort of-"
Molindi tried her best not to dose off during General Skywalker's 'Stand behind me because I have a hot, blue glow-stick' speech while Rex and Axel did their best not to smirk since they were thinking the exact same thing. The jedi must not have seen any of the fight with Ventress, otherwise he wouldn't be wasting his breath.
"In the case that we end up being split up," The General fished out two more comm-links and handed them to Molindi and Axel, who then clipped the small devices to their wrists. "These will make sure we stay in contact."
After putting out the fire, tossing the rocks back where they had been in the cave and scattering the ashes they'd left behind to hide their tracks, the four began the walk down the side of the cliff toward the jungle below in the same order as they'd walked through the sewers.
"What's that stuff on your neck? And your leg?" Axel asked when their surroundings began to get brighter and he had a clearer view of the woman. It was a dull green goo that may have once been slimy, but was now dried and cracked like a riverbed after a long drought. Remembering the advice Rex had given her that previous night, Molindi rubbed the dried flakes from her skin and revealed dull scars beneath, already healing and shrinking in size.
"Rex said that it would heal my burns," She ran her hand over the spots and found only a dull ache left behind at the contact. The woman grinned when Rex turned his head to check if the plant had helped and she leaned her chin to the side, revealing what was left of the mark. He returned her smile, then looked ahead.
"Glad it helped." Molindi and Axel exchanged knowing glances to each other as General Skywalker raised an eyebrow to Rex in confusion, then wiped the expression off his face. That must not have been the Jedi's idea, and it amused the two Varactyl Squadron members when Rex sent a smirk back.
Though they hadn't really had any time to discuss the situation with Rex and General Skywalker after she told him the entire story of what happened on Ganta-Nego, the jury was still out in Axel's eyes in regards to whether or not he believed the two could be a potential match. He wasn't an idiot- he knew that there was something growing between them. He'd heard their conversations, noticed the stolen glances and the small tint of color that shaded their cheeks in the presence of one another. Anyone could've seen the sparks flying.
The only factor that pushed the idea of them being a couple to the side was her vulnerability. Only hours before, she'd been in a state of grief over the loss of her troops and her lover. He was no expert on how much time it took for a person to get over something as traumatic as that, if a person even could get over it. But what he knew for sure was that if Rex genuinely cared for her, not her body or the fact that she was the only woman in the entire clone army, then they were going to need a lot more time than this mission would probably allow. Yes, he knew that Rex was his superior...
But he'd be damned if he let anyone hurt Molindi like a fast relationship could.
Once the four reached the base of the cliff and began to approach the lush, densely-packed flora of the jungle, their line of two-by-two turned into single file with General Skywalker taking the lead and hacking away at the plants with his lightsaber to clear a path. Rex was second, Axel third and Molindi at the rear. Though he would never admit to it out loud, Axel didn't mind the woman standing behind them. If they were going to be ambushed, odds are she stood much more of a chance against the physical dangers here than he did.
"If I had any doubts before that we weren't still on Twar, they're all gone now," The Jedi stated between swings of his lightsaber, chopping at any vegetation that blocked their way. From a desolate dust-land to a humid jungle; he would've been more surprised if they were still on the cannibalistic planet.
"But the only other closest planet is Naboo, and I'm pretty sure this isn't the kind of habitat Naboo is famous for," Molindi said as the group continued to go deeper and deeper into the depths of the surrounding flora. "So where the hell could we be?"
"Let's start checking off the planets we know," Anakin suggested. "Not Twar, not Naboo, not Tatooine or Coruscant..."
"Not Ganta-Nego," Molindi added. "The jungles aren't this green, and it stinks of death twenty-four seven."
"Definitely not Kamino," Axel stated and the three soldiers chuckled slightly. "Not Dantooine , Kashyyyk, Geonosis, Pantora, Abbakinto-" His words were cut short when the clone ran into Rex's back, who had stopped dead in his tracks. General Skywalker had stopped as well, having hacked their way into a clearing that Molindi and Axel struggled to see past the two other men.
"What's the hold-up?" Molindi asked in a whisper. Axel just shrugged, an action that led to the curious woman ducking down to the forest floor and crawling between the legs of the stoic individuals. When her gaze followed that of Skywalker's and she saw what the other two did, her eyes widened and she gasped before a ginormous smile crossed her lips.
The clearing wasn't too large, about half the size of the arena they'd fought in, and a pool of beautiful, clear water took up half of it. Grasses as tall as their hips were scattered along the diameter of the body of water and dragonflies hovered just above the surface of the pond. But the tranquil scene wasn't the reason they'd stopped.
It was the elephantine creatures that caused the General to pause.
The large four-legged mammals were nearly twice as tall as the average clone, had long and wide ears they used to fan their backs and varied subtly in color, ranging from dark blues the shade of Kamino on a stormy day, greens as deep as the tallest trees on Kashyyyk, and purples like the finest Coruscant wine. Their crystalline tusks also varied in length; females' branched out like antlers to carry their younger babies when they grew tired while the males' remained simply single, one on each side of the trunks that hung from their heads. Their eyes were large, almost as big as a Rodian's, and had an even wider selection of color to choose from, some being a pure as silver and others as vibrant as neon yellow.
Despite not being able to see every single one, Molindi estimated that the herd had between ten to fifteen adults that grazed on the shorter grass, along with five or six babies that sprayed and splashed each other playfully on the pool's edge.
In an instant, Molindi knew where they were. She just couldn't believe it.
"Wait, Commander Rino-" Anakin reached out to grab her arm when she stood up, but wasn't fast enough as she wretched it in the opposite direction and slowly began to approach the group of animals, waiting a second or two in between steps. The jedi felt a panicked Rex and confused Axel trying to shove past him, but he held them back in the safety of the brush behind. "No, wait."
Her motions were slow, calm, and once she got five or six yards from the nearest creature, she fell to one knee and cupped her hands over her mouth before letting out a long, low sound. The men held their breath as the largest of the bunch, a female with thick skin as dark as the night sky and eyes as red and wild as fire, poked its head up to see where the sound had come from. The rest of the herd looked over as well, but the alpha was the only one to approach the woman, each heavy step shaking the ground.
"What is she doing?" Axel whispered in absolute confusion, but Anakin just smiled as the elephant crossed the distance between Molindi and its herd, then proceeded to sniff and smell the woman with its trunk.
"Give her a minute," Anakin whispered back, then returned his gaze to the insane commander ahead of them. The elephant ran its trunk over her skin and hair, taking in all the scents she had to offer and let out a loud blast of approval. In an act that almost caused the two clones to have a heart-attack, the giant beast wrapped its trunk around her middle and lifted her up into the air. The jedi had to use the Force to keep the men behind him in check, knowing that any action out of turn would be considered a threat to the animals, and watched as the beast carried her to the edge of the pond and tossed her in with the babies, who squealed gleefully and began to spray the woman with water, hosing her down as she laughed.
"They think I smell bad from the sewer!" Molindi called out to the men and playfully started to splash the little elephants back. "Now do exactly what I did, but slower!" She instructed, though Rex and Axel were too busy recovering from simultaneous heart-failures to fully listen to her words. Anakin chuckled at their reactions and pat them on their backs.
"Alright men, looks like its bath time." He smirked before stepping out into the clearing as well, leaving the clones to wonder what kind of crazy beautiful tornado they'd let into their lives.
