Chapter Six: First Day

Catherine paced nervously in her living room, occasionally glancing out the window to see if Gina arrived yet. It was Friday, 6:30am, just thirty minutes before she had to be at work.

She woke up at five, showered, and got ready for work. She had make up on, something she rarely used. Her lips were a ruby red, with a thin line of black eyeliner and some mascara. Her hair was straightened, falling to her mid back, and she was dressed in her new outfit.

The familiar buzz of her phone signaled she received a message. She hastily unlocked the screen, and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw who texted her.

'Be there in five! I stopped to get some coffee for us.'

Catherine gathered her keys and locked her door behind her, deciding it would be best to wait outside.

Gina arrived not long after, pulling into the parking lot.

"Good morning," Gina greeted in a sing-song voice, handing Catharine a coffee, "Three cream, two sugar."

Catherine's mouth watered as she took the hot beverage and wasted no time in taking a long, savoring sip. "Thank you."

Gina chatted most of the time during the short drive to V.K., while Catherine's nerves were skyrocketing. She was overwhelmed and feeling slightly nauseous at the thought of starting her new job. Her thoughts went back to when she first met Vincent Kingsley, and she briefly wondered if he would be that rude now that she was working for him. She suspected he would, and prayed silently that she would be able to handle him.

"When you're off work, let me know your schedule. We can find a time to go to the bar and have a drink," Gina said as they arrived at the building.

"Of course, I'll probably message you during my break and let you know how it's going. Thanks for the coffee and the ride, I'll see you later." Catherine replied.

She stepped out of the vehicle, and didn't move for a short while as she gathered herself. She could do this, the worst that could happen would be getting fired on the first day. As long as the people weren't overly rude towards her, she knew she could succeed. Breathing in deeply, she finally made her way to the door.

The man from when she first came for her interview was there, and he silently held the door as she stepped inside the building. She attempted to seem confident as she made her way towards the front desk, where the same blonde woman was sitting.

"Good morning," Catherine greeted, "Floor 13?"

The girl glanced up and unlike the first time they met, offered a smile, "You look good. Yes, please head to floor 13. Ariana will fill you in on your duties. Good luck."

Taken back by the compliment, Catherine offered an awkward nod and went to the elevator. She wasn't used to people saying she looked good, other than the times Gina said she did. She hoped the woman wasn't insulted when she didn't compliment back, and made a mental note to do so when she saw her next.

When the elevator doors opened, the woman she assumed was Ariana, the receptionist that she had met during her first visit here, was standing a few feet away.

"Welcome," She greeted, "We are pleased to have you here. Please, if you could follow me."

For some reason, Ariana's kindness didn't seem genuine. Catherine suspected the woman was in fact, not happy she was now working here.

"You will be doing whatever Mr. Kingsley asks of you. That could range from grabbing him something to drink, ordering food or going out and getting it for him, as well keeping track of his schedule. You will receive a company tablet to take notes and add in his schedules, and a cellphone to take important calls in case Mr. Kingsley is unavailable. I assume you drive, yes?"

"I, uh," Catherine stuttered, "No, but I do have a date set to get it." She lied, hoping Ariana wouldn't catch on. Damn it, she thought to herself in panic, damn it all to hell. Now Gina has to teach me. Ugh.

"Once you have your license, you will get a company car as well. Everything will be installed, contacts will be added already, and any essential programs or apps you need will be on the phone and tablet. The car will have all important places on the GPS, so you don't have to worry about figuring any of that out."

The overwhelming feeling grew tenfold, and Catherine could only nod. She never expected to have so much responsibility working here. Hell, she only thought she would be catering to Mr. Kingsley's every need, not everything Ariana was telling her. I guess it makes sense though, she tried to reason with herself, doing everything he asks could mean taking phone calls, or driving somewhere for him...

"Mr. Kingsley should be arriving shortly," Ariana informed as they stopped at a door, "This is the staff room. There's a bathroom, and another closet room where you can put your personal items. Once you're finished, you can go to office 66 and wait for Mr. Kingsley there."

Catherine stepped inside the room, awed by the size. It was bigger than her apartment. Two sleek, beige leather couches were located in the middle of the room, with a glass coffee table set between them. To their right were obsidian countertops, with a fridge, a stove, and a coffee machine. A table was located beside the small kitchen area, with four chairs surrounding it. To their left, was a hallway that no doubt led to the bathroom and the closet.

"Oh, your break starts at 12:30 and ends at 1:30. Your shift ends at 5pm. At some point I will email you your work schedule, but if I'm correct, your next shift will be on Monday."

"Thank you," Catherine said, "I appreciate it."

Once Ariana left, she made her way down the hallway and to the bathroom. She didn't have to use it, but was simply checking on herself to make sure she still looked presentable. Once she deemed herself worthy, she went to the closest. She was mildly surprised that there was already a shelf with her name on it. She placed her purse on it, and then made her way back out.

Now all she had to do was find office 66 and wait for her new boss.
