Chapter 1

Elena's POV

'Dear Diary, Is it wrong that I feel alone? I know that I'm extremely lucky to have all the things I have but that's how I feel: alone.'

I stopped writing and ripped that page from my diary and set it under a salt shaker only to have it blown out onto the sidewalk. I try to catch it, but it keeps getting away from me.

I'm looking mainly at the paper. I see black boots coming towards it. I look up to see a guy - a hot guy - and he picks it up.

"Did you lose something?" He asks.

I take a breath. "Uh, yes it's a... particularly mortifying page from my journal." I stutter out.

"Oh, you sensor your journal. I'm pretty sure that's against journal rules."

I laugh. "And I'm pretty sure you're not the journal police." I pause. "Trust me it's really bad."

"I'm officially intrigued."

I step towards him. "And I'm officially not kidding." He gives the paper to me. "Thankyou. I'm Elena."

"I'm Stefan. It's nice to meet you, Elena."

"It's nice to meet you too, Stefan. I have to get going though. Bye." I quickly grab my bag and walk home.

*****The Next Day*****

I was drawn out of my thoughts by a honking car horn. I look out of the window and surely enough, Bonnie's car is on the street. She's driving me to school today.

I get up, go outside, and get into Bonnie's car.

"Hey." she says.

"Hey." I reply. She starts the car and we start driving.

"So, grams is telling me I'm psychic, our ancestors were from Salem and witches and all that, I know, crazy, but she's going on and on about it, and I'm like, 'Put this woman in a home already'..." I started spacing off in the middle of her rant, but then I'm pulled back to real life. "Elena! Back in the car.

"I did it again didn't I? I'm sorry Bonnie. You were telling me that..."

"That I'm psychic now." She states proudly.

"Right. Ok, then predict something. About me."

"Okay, hmm, I predict this year is gonna be kick ass and you are going to be beyond happy."

We soon get to the school and walk to my locker.

"Major lack of male real estate. Look at the shower curtain on Kelly Beech, she look like a hot--can I still say tranny mess?"

"No, that's over."

"Ugh, find man, coin a phrase. It's a busy year." She like at something behind me which compels me to look too. It's Matt listening to music with headphones and looking at us. I wave but he just looks away.

"He hates me." I say, leaning against a locker.

"That's not hate. That's 'you dumped me, but I'm too cool to show it, but secretly I'm listening to Air Supply's greatest hits.'" she states, trying to cheer me up.

"Elena. Oh, my God." Caroline says as she comes up to us and hugs me a bit too tight. "How are you? Oh, it's so good to see you."

"I'm fine. Thank you."

"Ok, see you guys later?"

"Ok! Bye!" Bonnie says, and Caroline walks away

"No comment." I say.

"I'm not going to say anything."

Bonnie and I start walking to class but she stops me. We're in front of the office.

"Hold up. Who's this?" She says

"All I see is back." I say.

"It's a hot back. I'm sensing Seattle, and he plays the guitar."

I laugh, "You're really going to run this whole psychic thing into the ground, huh?"

"Pretty much."

I look around and see my brother, Jeremy, talking to some guy. The guy says, "Good batch man" and Jeremy walks away and into the boys bathroom.

"I'll be right back." I say to Bonnie as I go into the bathroom to find Jeremy.

I go in and some guy is in there. When he sees me he says "Whoa! Pants down, chick!"

I grab Jeremy's face and look into his eyes to see if he's high.

"Great. It's the first day of school and you're stoned." I say.

"No, I'm not." he says.

"Where is it? Is it on you" I look in his jacket pocket.

He pushes my hand away. "Stop, all right?! You need to chill yourself."

"Chill myself? What is that, stoner talk? Dude, you are so cool." I state sarcastically, as I look into his other jacket pocket.

He swats my hand away again. "Look, stop! I don't have anything on me. Are you crazy?"

"You haven't seen crazy, Jeremy! I gave you a summer pass, but I am done watching you destroy yourself. No, no, no, you know what? Go ahead. Keep it up. But just know that I am going to be there to ruin your buzz every time, you got it? Jeremy, I know who you are. And it's not this person. So don't be this person. I'm your sister and I'm just looking after you."

"I don't need this." he leaves.

I sigh and go out the door too, only to run into Stefan.

"Uh, pardon me. Um. . .is this the men's room?" He asks.

"Yes. Um, I was just, Um—I was just—It's a long story. . ." I stutter out.

We try to go around eachother at the same time but it doesn't work so Stefan moves to the side.

"Thank you." I say, and walk away.

*****Last Period Of School*****

"Once our home state of Virginia joined confederacy in 1861,"Mr Tanner continues his boring lecture "it created a tremendous amount of tension within the state. People in Virginia's northwest region had different ideals than those from the traditional deep south. Then Virginia divided in 1863 with the northwest region joining the union...." I stopped listening and looked at Stefan and he looked at me. I looked away. Then, I got a text from Bonnie.

Text message from Bonnie: Hottie staring at you.

That brought a smile to my face.

I look back at Stefan to see that Bonnie was right. I then look back to the front.

*****Three Hours Later*****

"I'm meeting Bonnie at the grill." I yell to my aunt, Jenna as I pass her on my way to the front door.

"Okay, have fun." she stops, "Wait, I got this. Don't stay out late, it's a school night."

"Well done, Aunt Jenna."

I open the door to find Stefan standing on my porch

"Oh." I say surprised.

"Sorry, I was about to knock."

"Oh. How did you know where I lived?"

"It's a small town. I asked the first person I saw. Um, I thought you might want this back." He hands my diary to me.

"Oh, I must have forgotten it. I - thankyou." I say, slightly embarrassed. I wonder if he read it.

"Don't worry, I didn't . . . read it." he said, practically reading my mind.

"No? Why not? Most people would have."

"Well, I wouldn't want anyone to read mine."

"You keep a journal?"

"Yeah, if I don't write it down, I forget it. Memories are too important."

"Yeah. I'm just gonna... umm, you don't have to stay out there." I say as I walk away and put my diary in its hiding place. I come back to the front door to see Stefan standing inside.

"Were you going somewhere?"

"Yeah, I'm meeting a friend. Do you want to come?"

"Sure."

We go outside and get into my car. I start it and drive to the grill.

I park and we get out and go inside. As we enter, everyone is looking at us. Matt comes up to us.

"Hey, I'm Matt, nice to meet you." he says.

"Hi. I'm Stefan."

"Hey." I say.

"Hey." Matt says.

Bonnie, Caroline, Matt, Stefan, and I all sit down at a table and start talking. We eventually get into a conversation about Stefan.

"So, you were born in Mystic Falls?" Caroline asks Stefan.

"Mmm-Hmm. And moved when I was still young." Stefan answers.

"Parents?" Bonnie asks.

"My parents passed away."

"I'm sorry. Any siblings?" I ask. I know that losing your parents is hard.

"I have a brother. We used to travel around but we decided that it would be easier to live with my uncle at the bording house.

"So, Stefan," Caroline starts "if you're new, then you don't know about the party tomorrow."

"It's a back to school thing at the falls." Bonnie says

"Are you going?" Stefan asks me.

"Of course she is." Bonnie answered for me.

*****The Next Day. At The Party*****

"Just admit it, Elena." Bonnie says.

"Oh, ok, so he's a little pretty." I say.

"He has that romance novel stare. So where is he?"

"I don't know. You tell me, you're the psychic one."

"Right, I forgot. Ok, so give me a sec. Grams says I have to concentrate."

"Wait, you need a crystal ball."

I look around and find a beer bottle and give it to Bonnie. She looks behind me, closes her eyes and drops her cup.

"Oops, I'm gonna get a refill." she says and she leaves.

"Ok? Bonnie!" I say.

I turn around see that Stefan is behind me. "Well, at least now I see why Bonnie left"

"Hi." he says.

"Hi." I say surprised.

"I did it again, didn't I?"

"Yeah." I giggle

"I'm sorry."

"Oh, it's alright. You're . . . here."

"I'm here."

We started walking and talking. We went out onto the bridge.

"You know, you're kind of the talk of the town." I say.

"Am I?"

"Mmm-Hmm. Mysterious new guy, oh, yeah."

"Well, you have the mysterious thing going, too. Twinged in sadness."

"You don't want to know, it's - it's not exactly party chit-chat."

"Well, I've never really been very good at, uh, chit-chat."

"Last spring. . my aunt and uncles car drove off of a bridge into the lake, and. . .they didn't survive. My parents are divorced and my aunt was really close to me. Ever since the crash, I've felt alone. So that's my story.

"You won't be sad forever, Elena."

We started talking some more.

"I like Bonnie, she seems like a good friend." Stefan said.

"Best friend in the world." I stated.

"And Matt, he can't seem to, uh, take his eyes off of us." When he says that, I look down to the party and see Matt looking at us.

"Matt's that friend since childhood that you start dating because you owe it to yourselves to see if you can be more."

"And?"

"And then my parents died, and everything changes. Anyway, Matt and I, together we just, I don't know, it wasn't, um. . .it wasn't. . .um"

"Passionate?"

"No. No, it wasn't passionate."

We keep walking and talking. Everything seems perfect with Stefan. I really like him.

*****An Hour Later. At Elena's House*****

I'm writing and drawing in my journal. I look up and out my window to see Stefan. I go to the door.

"I know it's late. But, uh. . .I wanted to talk to you." He says

"You know, for months, I felt so alone, but when I'm with you I don't feel that way and all people ask me if I'm alright."

"What do you tell them?"

"That I'll be fine."

"Do you ever mean it?"

"Ask me tomorrow. It's warmer in the house. We can talk. Would you like to come in?"

"Yes."
