Ch. 9
Night stumbled down the hill after his siblings. Strike was first, ploughing through the tall grasses towards Red and a few Selsa's and Delta's. Runner was right on Strike's rail, shouting excitedly. They had just brought back a buffalo. Night wondered how they had done it. He finally reached it and Red moved away to let Night have a bite. Sky joined him a few moment later with Eagle.
"How did you catch it?" asked Strike, impressed.
"It was hard, I tell you," muttered Fang.
"It helped that it was already injured," pointed out River. Night ate the succulent meat quickly then trotted away, eager to explore a bit more. As he passed a large rock, he spotted Half Moon lounging in the shadows. He grunted and walked away.
"Hey, Night," called Half Moon. He grinned. "You still sulking?" Night frowned and turned around.
"I wasn't sulking!" he protested. Half Moon grunted.
"Then are you willing to stay up one more night?" he asked. Night shook his head.
"Leave him alone Half Moon," came Red's stern voice. He padded to Night's side and took him by the scruff. Night wriggled, trying to get free.
"Put me down!" he cried. Red sighed and plopped Night back to the ground. Half Moon narrowed his eyes.
"You need Red to protect you?" he taunted. "I'm just an old wolf."
"Half Moon, stop taunting him," Red said angrily. "Come on Night, let's go." Night refused. He didn't want Half Moon to think he couldn't stand up for himself.
"I can stand up to him myself!" assured Night to Red. "I'll see you tonight then!" Half Moon smiled and nodded. Red frowned and dragged Night away.
"You're not going to see him tonight, Night. He's just delusional," said Red with a huff.
"What does that mean?" asked Night.
"Nothing," muttered Red. "Tomorrow I'm brining Strike and Runner to see us hunt. You're going to need rest if you want to come as well."
"Is Sky going?" asked Night.
"Sky?" Red said. "Ah, no."
"Why not?" asked Night.
"She...., doesn't want to," Red explained. "But if you want to come, you're going to have to get some rest. No staying up to see Half Moon." Night sighed.
"Alright," he said finally. Red smiled and gave Night a small loving lick.
"Good."
