Ch. 15
Night was extremely excited. They were going to go hunting. And this time, they were allowed to stalk the prey and follow behind the chase. Night dragged Sky out of the den by the scruff.
"Come on!" he said. "Why don't you want to come?" Sky pouted.
"I just don't," she muttered. "I'd rather stay with Eagle." Eagle slipped out of the den and gave Sky a loving but stern look.
"I'll be just fine without you," Eagle assured Sky sternly. "Go on."
"Yeah, you went last time, it wasn't that bad was it?" Night said. Sky huffed. She sighed and relented. Night brought her to the end of the hill where Red and the other hunters were waiting. This time, the selsas and deltas were coming. Night followed behind the group as they made their way away from camp. He kept near Sky who stayed behind.
"Why don't you like going?" asked Night. He ached to hunt himself. He wanted to feel the feeling of stalking the prey then running up behind it. He wanted to feel how it was, hunting together, as a pack.
"I just- don't," shrugged Sky. Night sighed, knowing she didn't want him to press him.
"Point and Snap spotted a herd of bison further away," Red explained to Runner and Strike at the front of the pack. "We need extra wolves for that." Night urged Sky on and they pushed past towards Red to hear better.
"Are you going to aim for the hurt?" asked Night enthusiastically. He pushed past Strike to trot beside Red. Strike glared at him and nipped his tail. Night growled but made way for her.
"Yes, if there is a hurt bison. If not we will aim for the young. But normally, the mother will protect her calf till she dies," Red answered. "Or a bison who strays from the herd." They trotted on the frozen ground for a long time. Night's pads were getting numb from cold and his eyes stung from the wind. He furrowed his brow and looked at the ground. As they walked further, the amount of snow on the ground increased. Soon, Night was using so much strength to plow through the knee length snow. Finally, he spotted them. In the distance, dotting the white horizon were black shapes. Bison. As the wind blew strongly, the scent of bison carried towards Night. He sniffed it. He had never tasted bison but just smelling the prey, he knew it would be like nothing he had ever tasted. Red gazed at the bison, assessing the herd.
"Let's go. Make sure not to be seen," Red ordered. The wolves snapped to attention. Red looked meaningfully to Sky.
"It's your second time coming with us," he told her. "Be careful." Sky nodded mutely. Slowly, the pack descended down towards the bison. Night plowed through the snow, feeling new strength. The wolves were silent now, nobody chatted or talked or played around. Slowly, the adult wolves started to spread out. Some started to trot, others walked slower but they all knew their job. They had to work together if they were going to even get close of catching a bison. Night followed behind Red and Strike. Runner was by his side and Sky just behind him. They were silent as they followed Red. The bison were nearer and nearer. Soon, Night could make out their small horns. They crept nearer. Now the pack was so spread out sometimes Night would lose sight of a few wolves who slipped away into the bracken or who wandered too far away. Night and his siblings were some way behind Red, careful not to bother him. Finally, they stopped in a small dip in the ground, very near to the bison. Night could hear them baying loudly and see their tails swishing. He spotted a few calves who stuck by to their large, strong mothers. Night felt a trickle of excitement. Red crouched and glued his eyes onto the bison. He assessed each and every one of them. Night spotted a few other wolves crouching and waiting but the others were hiding, nowhere to be seen. Then Red flicked his tail. The hunt had begun.
