Ch. 12
"Did you see everything?" Red asked as they dragged the elk back to their camp.
"We did," nodded Strike. "Although you did go far at the end."
"For now you will watch from the distance," nodded Red. "Then one day we'll allow you to follow us and stalk the prey. And when we start chasing it you may follow us but a bit further back."
"When?" asked Strike excitedly.
"Yeah, I bet I could run faster than that elk," Runner said. Red chuckled.
"When you're a bit older," he promised. He looked at Night. "Did you like it?" Night nodded.
"You were really good at the end," Night said. "I think you're the reason why we caught the elk." Red smiled.
"Yes, thank you Night," Red grinned. "Eagle!" Eagle and Sky were waiting for them. Sky stared at the elk then at Night and wagged her tail.
"How was it?" asked Eagle.
"Great," smiled Red.
"Good catch. They didn't get into trouble, did they?" Eagle asked. Sky trotted to Night.
"Did you see them kill it?" she asked excitedly.
"Yeah! it was far but we did," nodded Night.
"Why didn't you come?" asked Runner. Sky shrugged.
"You're scared, that's why," Strike said, pushing past Sky. Night grimaced.
"She's so annoying," sighed Sky.
"But there's no other explanation to it," Runner put in. "You are probably scared. Next time, you'll come. It was fun." Runner ran away towards the elk. Sky sighed.
"It's ok," Night said. "It was nothing special. Let's eat." Eagle beckoned them over and the pups gobbled up the fresh and delicious elk. Night took a few bites then trotted away.
"Interesting?" came a voice as Night headed back for the den. He turned. In the shade of a large rock was Half Moon.
"What?" Night asked.
"Seeing the others hunt. Was it interesting?" Half Moon half grunted.
"Yeah," nodded Night. "Why do you need to eat last?"
"Who ever said that?" Half Moon snapped, his eyes flashing. Night back away.
"Sorry," he mumbled, not knowing what he had done wrong.
"I can eat when I want," Half Moon answered, his eyes narrowed. "Unlike the lessers or Zetas." Night nodded, not wanting to anger Half Moon again.
"Night!" called a voice. Night turned. Red was approaching him. "What are you doing?"
"Talking to Half Moon," Night replied.
"Don't," Red said sternly, glaring at Half Moon. "Come on, don't you want to come to the river?" Night shrugged. "Let's go." Red beckoned Night down the hill once more and Night trotted back down resentfully.
