Ch. 11
Night groggily opened his eyes. Red picked him up by the scruff.
"Why are you so tired?" Red asked impatiently. "Wake up. We're leaving." Night yawned and padded out of the den. Strike and Runner were already awake, running about outside excitedly. Night couldn't even feel his legs as he stumbled down the hill.
"You weren't with Half Moon, last night, were you?" Red said with narrowed eyes.
"No," lied Night sleepily. Red sighed. They joined the selsas.
"Let's go," Red said, flicking his tail. The wolves got up and slipped away into the long grasses. Night ran after them, following them through the long grasses. Strike was first, running right beside Red while Runner was right behind her. Night lingered behind with Daisy beside him.
"Hurry up Night," Red called. Night pushed faster. They were going so quick, everything was a blur. Suddenly, the wolves stopped. Night didn't need to be told, he immediately halted as well. He had smelt something. It was faint, but it was there. Red stood at the front, pricking his ears. Night didn't know what animal it was but he knew one thing for certain. Prey. He was surprised he knew exactly what to do. Slowly, together, the wolves crawled forward. Night's heart was racing and he was fully awake. They peered through the long grasses. Night knew not to venture further than the tall grasses or he'd be exposed. He stayed still, watching. Runner and Strike were right beside him, watching attentively. Slowly, the adult wolves broke out of the grasses. In the distance were a herd of elk. They were nibbling on the grass, spread out widely. Night watched in awe as Red flicked his tail, communicating without word or noise. Instantly, the other wolves started to move away, spreading out. They kept their bodies low to the ground and their eyes straight on the elk. Finally, the wolves reached very close to the elk. Night watched, unable to move his eyes away. He saw Red make a sign and suddenly, the wolves rushed forward. The elks suddenly belted away, screaming and bleating. Night watched in a trance as Red headed for a smaller younger elk who was separating from the others. Daisy was right behind Red. The young elk sprinted away, faster and faster. But the rest of the pack were closing in. From all sides, wolves were closing onto the elk. Suddenly, the young elk seemed to be gaining ground and losing the wolves but out of nowhere, Jaw appeared. He was soon running by the elk's side, occasionally giving it nips on the stomach. The elk kept running. Then Snow burst out from another side, pelting behind the elk. She leapt up and drove her teeth into the elk's rear. It reared up and kicked her off. She tumbled to the ground. Night gulped. But Snow sprung to her feet and kept chasing. Soon, the other wolves were catching up and Night could see them far away. Strike burst out of the tall grasses, eager to get nearer.
"Are we allowed to go nearer?" asked Runner nervously, his eyes still glued to the hunt.
"Of course, we're here to learn and see," Strike replied. The three siblings inched nearer. Now Red, Jaw, Snow and Snap were running side to side with the elk. Red gave a burst of speed and overtook the elk. It swerved and slipped. Jaw, Snow and Snap were onto it in a second. The elk bleated and kicked but Red and Jaw were sinking their teeth into its neck while Snow and Snap bit into its leg. The rest of the pack caught up, helping to kill the prey. Finally, the elk lay motionless, dead.
