Chapter 18: old memories

"Experienced it first hand?" I questioned as I frowned, leaning away from  him so I could take a closer look at his face. He seemed to avoid my gaze as he tried to gather the right words to say.

"It was a mistake." Obi-Wan sighed as he looked down at his hands that were folded in his laps. After that he stood up, walking towards the balcony as he gripped the balistrade tightly. "One I wouldn't dare to repeat. Atachments they... they are a path to the dark side of the force."

"Sometimes we don't have a choice, Obi-Wan." I walked after him and came to stand next to him, staring off into the horizon. "It's not the attachments that make a Jedi weak, make them turn to the dark side. It's the fact that you try your best to fight against it, leaving you weak and uncertain about your feelings. It's not love that makes a man turn dark, it's what he does with it that makes him who he is. Every man falls in love eventually, there's no stopping that. The only thing you control is how you deal with it."

"So you would have me love someone who I wouldn't be able to protect from the following consequences?" he turned towards me. "That's selfish even for you, my dear princess."

"It's not selfish if you know that she can protect herself." I raised my eyebrow at him.

"It's not only about that." Obi-Wan countered. "It's also the fact that we are charged with protecting everyone. Having attachments can cloud your judgement when it comes to saving the one you love and other people, maybe even more depending on the situation."

'We're not all damsels in distress needed to be saved by jedi, Obi-Wan." I turned away from him. "Quite the opposite, actually. You were the one to bring us in harms way in the first place."

"Now that's something else entirely." He chuckled as his face lighted up.

"We were talking about you, weren't we?" I joined him as a smile grew on my face. "let's not forget about your dramatic shouts back in the dungeons. No, Lyanna!! I need to talk to you! Don't leave me!" I mimmicked his voice, leaving Obi-Wan laughing even harder than before.

"You had me locked up in a cage Lyanna." He protested. "To be fair, I did save your life later. So in fact; you were a damsell in distress."

"Then I suppose it could never become something between us, could it?" I turned my full attention towards him, my eyes scanning his closely. I saw how his eyes widened slightly and his hands slightly clenched into fists at his side.

"It would be disastrous if it did." He spoke softly, the former smirk having dissapeared from his face. He frowned a bit as he took my hand in his, his thumb softly tracing circles on the palm. "I would never hope for it to be for I am scared that it would only end like it did the last time."

"Obi-Wan." I spoke his name softly as I laid my other hand on the side of his cheek. "You needn't be scared. Whatever happened last time, history rarely repeats itself. You can't hold yourself back the rest of your life for one mistake you made when you were young." I sighed when I saw in his eyes that I had yet succeeded in convincing him. Above all though I saw the hurt in his eyes. It was so evident that I realized that it couldn't have been long since it happened. Whoever he lost, it wasn't a long time ago.

"What was her name?" I looked at him in symphaty.

"Satine." He said. "Her name was Satine."

I remained silent as I looked at him, not knowing what to say. It was clear that something drastically happened and that she hadn't died of a natural cause. No, somehow he thought that it was all his fault, making him shut himself off from any other attachments to make sure he couldn't hurt anyone else.

Obi-Wan took the first move by stepping away from me and turning back towards the view off the balcony.

"Obi-Wan-" My hand reached for his after he let go. My words got stuck in my throat though when I heard voices coming up the stairs. I recognized my father's, Stefan's and Anakins voice.  I turned towards them when they appeared in the doorway. From the corner of my eye I saw Obi-Wan doing the same.

"There she is." My father smiled as he walked up to me. "We've been searching for you two everywhere for the past hour."

Anakin eyed Obi-Wan who was still partly undressed. He raised his one eyebrow as a smirk grew on his face. "I don't think they really cared for tactics and plans, your highness. They seem rather busy still."

"Obi-Wan needed to be treated, father." I glared at Anakin as I took a step towards them. "As did all the other troopers. I've been busy trying to cope with all the new patients."

"About that." My father's look became grimm as his brows knotted together. "I can't recall I gave you permission to lend these men our survices, let alone grand them passage to our city. When I come to think of it, the last thing I remember is giving orders to kill them if necessary."

"About that-"

"You forged alliances with the republic without my consent." His eyes narrowed. I looked at the jedi for support but they were just as lost as I was. Obi-Wan shifted uncomfortably while Anakin only almost invisibly reached for his light-saber.

"Father, I had no choice but to-"

"To ignore my orders?" His voice was loud and his eyes almost blazing fire. Much to my surprise though that anger soon turned into a soft look and a smile on his lips as he laid his hand on my shoulder. "I couldn't have been more proud of what you have become."

"What?" I mumbled. I could hear Obi-Wan and Anakin let out a deep sigh of relief as Stefan chuckled lightly in response.

"You were the first to realize that something was amiss. If it hadn't been for you, we would've been completely defenseless against Derik and all of the troopers would've been dead for no reason." He grasped my shoulder a bit more tight as he smiled at me. "You saved hundreds of lifes today, Lyanna."

"I... I only did what I thought was right." His smile was contagious, leaving me with one of the biggest smirks on my face. Soon it fell though when I realized what consequences the event of that day brought for my father. "About Derik, I'm sorry. I tried to convince him but I..."

"You tried your best. I couldn't ask any more of you." He sighed deeply. "I should've noticed the change in his demaenor. Derik was always scheming and plotting but I never thought he would do it to this extenct. I never knew he knew off Arthas's cage."

"This Arthas," Obi-Wan interrupted us. "who is he? What can he do?"

"Arthas Blackwing is one of the oldest Valarjar to ever walk this planet. His abilities in combat remain unmatched but above all he has a taste for blood. It's the reason that we locked him up in the way we did." My father let go of my shoulders as he turned towards the two jedi. "It's no wonder that you called it a weapon of mass destruction when you first arrived on our planet."

"How did you defeat him last time?" Obi-Wan asked as his hand went up to storke his beard.

"We didn't. We only managed to freeze him in time, literally. This happened almost 200 years ago when the Timeturners still existed. They managed to turn time against him whilst my army forced him down." The king's face grew grimm of the memory. "Many a men died that day trying to contain him. We thought that locking him up like that would ridd us of the threat. I never could've imagined that my own brother would betray us like this."

"Wait, 200 years past?" Anakin frowned.

"We Valarians have an average life span of 400 years, Anakin." I told him. "The king is now around his 330's."

"Too old for any of this." Eric sighed as he sat down on the chair. "Now that the timeturners are gone, I'm afraid we don't stand a chance."

"You didn't have an army of troopers and two jedi back then." Anakin tried to cheer him up. "Maybe if Obi-Wan and I contact the republic we would be able to get even more reinforcements."

"No." My father immediatelly refused. "If I allow even more of your kind to enter our planet, we'll have a civil war on our hands." Obi-Wan and Anakin exchanged confused glances in response. "No offense, Jedi, but you don't exactly have a good reputation amongst my people."

"What's the cause of this?" Obi-Wan questioned as his frown deepened.

"Almost 300 years ago, during the reign of my father, your kind invaded our planet and brought your war with you. These so called sith lords and jedi masters destroyed everything in their path." Stefan spoke up, eyeing Anakin and Obi-Wan with a glare. "If you bring even more jedi or troopers with you I'm afraid our people won't allow it."

"What about these timeturners?" Obi-Wan suggested. "Are you sure they're extinct?"

"The last ones were murdered." The king's eyes darkened, as if he relived the moment all over again.

"And there's no way any of your people can learn their powers?" Anakin asked. "For as far as I know, your so called Valarjar can do a lot with their powers."

"Time is more complicated than the Seidr, the power that you also know, that they control. It's something that's genetically inherited." Stefan explained as he walked up towards me, laying his hand on my shoulder.

"No, there will be no stopping Arthas if he breaks free. Our main priority is to make sure he doesn't escape at all." Eric concluded.

"Then let's make sure he doesn't." Anakin smiled almost devishly.

"That's the plan indeed." Eric stood up from his chair. "Obi-Wan, I would like to discuss some matters with you and Stefan on our way to the council. Walk with me." He ordered.

Soon I was left staring at them as he left, thoughts swirling around in my head. It all seemed so unreal, the war, the fact that my uncle betrayed us all and above all the fact that the jedi joined our forces. After everything I finally didn't have to fight those I didn't want to hurt but it was at great cost.

"Are you coming?" Anakin snapped me from my thoughts as he walked towards me, his eyes scanning mine. They soon went to my hands which were slightly covered with Obi-Wan's blood.

"I guess, in a few moments." My voice was soft as I stared down. I knew how to handle myself around Obi-Wan but with Anakin it was a whole other story. He still seemed to radiate some kind of dangerous power which his dark clothes didn't exactly soften out. Not to mention the fact that just a few hours ago he was still trying to kill me.

"Listen, feathers." He walked even closer to me till he was standing right before me. "I'll admit it, I was wrong."

My eyes widened slightly in surprise, not expecting him to say anything like that. He didn't seem the tipe to admit it.

"I'm not saying that you were innocent in all of this, I only think that it was all a series of unfortunate events which led us to fight each other." He spoke as he eyed me carefully. Suddenly I saw the boy behind the mask of the jedi he usually wore. "What I wanted to ask is... Maybe we should start again. No crudges, no memories that need to be brought up. A clean slate."

I smiled softly at him in wonder as I extended my hand for him to take. "Lyanna."

"Anakin." he gladly accepted my hand and held it firmly. He then put it on the small of my back and directed me towards the stairs to follow the others. "I hope Obi-Wan didn't bore you to death with his politics."

"He didn't bore me. He just made me realize that you jedi are the strangest people in the galaxy."

"Well, you're not wrong." Anakin chuckled in response.  "But we might just be the only people who can save you."
