Chapter 17: A new ally

You'd think that after that whole fiasco in the palace it'd all be over. That we could fly back peacefully and gather our thoughts. That couldn't have been more wrong.

Right after Obi-Wan had taken control over the gryphon again my uncle's men noticed that we were escaping. After realizing that it was me they send a whole horde of traitors after us, leaving us scurrying back quickly.

"Do you have another of those great plans of yours?!" Obi-Wan yelled towards Anakin as he flew his dark brown gryphon next to his.

"I thought you were the most experienced one here!" Anakin protested while helplessly avoiding the rain of arrows that was raining down on us.

"Anakin! Now is not the time for games!"

"Well, you're not helping either!"

"Shut up, both of you!" I groaned internally. I felt Obi-Wan's chest stiffen up immediately as I held him tightly, trying my best not to fall off the gryphon.

You're like a bunch of kids!" I added in frustration. "Now, you morons, all you need to do is get us out of here. I will deal with the rest."

"How do you plan on doing that?" Obi-Wan snapped. "You can't fly."

"Watch and learn." I narrowed my eyes in determination, grasped his side tightly and then swung my leg around his left side so that I was straddling him.

"Whoa!" Obi-Wan's eyes widened immediately as he tried to back away.

"Suck it up!" I said. "It's not like some womanly contact is going to get you killed!"

"It's not that he's worried about." Anakin laughed loudly at the sight of his startled master. "It's that he's afraid he's going to like you."

"Shut up Anakin." Obi-Wan grumbled as he tried his best to position himself in such a way that he was touching me as little as possible. Yet he knew that he couldn't do anything about the fact that my legs were straddling him.

"Are you uncomfortable?" I chuckled as I grasped my gun and loaded it while looking right into his eyes.

"That's not exactly the word I would use." Obi-Wan answered, distracted by the look in my eyes.

"Keep your eyes on the sky, pretty boy, I don't want to experience another fall like that again." I looked past his handsome face and to the enemies who were pursuing us.

"I would never let you fall."

It took a good 80 minutes till we could finally fly peacefully. I was slumped against Obi-Wan's chest, my head resting on his shoulder with my eyes closed after I shot the last target.

I let out a loud huff, dropping the overheated gun and watching it fall to the ground. Obi-Wan had finally relaxed after 20 minutes but he still refused to move.

I on the contrary was getting quite comfortable in his arms. His warmth that radiated from his chest soothed me to the point that I almost forgot everything. He smelt nice too, like a forest during a midsummer's day.

"You know, I could fall asleep like this." I mumbled as I snuggled closer to his chest, burrowing my throbbing head deeper into the fabric of his tunic.

"I wasn't before, but now I'm absolutely sure you've got a bad concussion." Obi-Wan chuckled lightly which made his chest vibrate. I smiled too, savouring the feeling.

"Maybe." I lifted my head and sat back slightly so I could look at his face. His gentle eyes met mine as the joy twinkled in his blue orbs.

"You know, I seem to remember you telling me that being in contact with you like this might get me killed." He lifted his eyebrow when I didn't move back to sit behind him.

"It depends on the situation." I smiled devilishly as I put my hand against his cheek, my thumb following the outlines of his lips absentmindedly.

His eyes widened in response and his lips parted slightly. I was completely unaware of the affect I had on him. Like he said, I probably had a bad concussion. So, I didn't realize that I had my arms draped around his neck and my face dangerously close to his.

"Lyanna, I-" he frowned slightly but didn't back away. The change in his expression did snap me back from my trance though, making me utter a small sorry as I swung my legs back to where they were in the first place.

"So, feathers." Anakin broke the silence that followed. I tensed up at the sound of his voice, remembering that he also was with us. He must've seen the whole moment Obi-Wan and I just shared, if it even meant something.

"Where's this hideout of yours?" Anakin continued as he turned to look at me.

"I'll point you in the right direction." I said as I tried to find a comfortable position behind Obi-Wan. "we're very close though."

"For the large city like you described it's positioned very distant from any kind of civilization." Obi-Wan said as he held tightly onto the reigns of the gryphon he was riding. I could feel his chest vibrating with each word he spoke as I rested my head on his back with my arms wrapped tightly around his waist.

"It's large for us." I said, lifting my head and planting my chin on his shoulder, watching where he was taking us. "We don't have such a large population in Valeria as you do on your planets."

"There it is!" I nudged Obi-Wan and pointed at the towers that just emerged from behind the trees. "My dear gentlemen, may I welcome you to our most beautiful city: Eagle's Fall."

I smiled as I watched their faces. They were obviously watching in awe as the sight of the city came into view. Thin clouds hung over the city with the light of the sun reflecting on the surface of the water.

"It's beautiful." Obi-Wan muttered as his eyes took in the sight before him.

"You should've seen it before, when there wasn't a war." I said as my eyes found the dense crowd near the med centre. As I could see now that we were getting near, the hospital was overrun. They had set a few tents outside to provide even more medical attention for the returning soldiers.

"Land there." I pointed at the landing site near the hospital. Obi-Wan obliged, landing the gryphon elegantly and stepping off of it with ease. He offered me a hand which I gladly accepted.

"So, what now?" Anakin asked as they followed in my fast footsteps.

"It depends on what is happening here." I said. "I'm just glad they haven't taken the fight to us."

"Valkyr!" The head of the hospital came running towards me. It was a somewhat elder woman with greying hair who was called Eline. Right now, her normally pearly white uniform was covered in blood.

"We need your help." She said while trying to catch her breath. "There are just way more than we can handle. Some are too badly injured for us to know what to do, Lyanna, you do."

"it's all right, Eline." I laid my hand on her shoulder to calm her down. "I will do everything I can."

I turned around to face the two Jedi who stood there like they were lost. Then my eyes caught sight of the blood on Obi-Wan's tunic. "You're hurt." I stated matter of factly.

"I'm fine." He shrugged. "It's just a scratch."

"It's more than just a scratch, Jedi." I frowned when I noticed that it was still bleeding. "Just go to the hospital with me."

"Other people need your help more than I do." He smiled at me as he laid his hand on my shoulder.

"Fine." I groaned, too tired to argue. "But tonight, I'm cleaning that wound, understood?" Obi-Wan chuckled and then raised his hands in defeat. "Eline, take them to the palace and tell the King to speak with them. After that you may go home, you've done enough for today."

"Thank you." She bowed slightly and then motioned for the Jedi to follow her.

"Wait! Obi-Wan protested. "What about your wings, your head?" He frowned in concern.

I chuckled as I felt warmth building up in my stomach, knowing that he cared. I turned towards the hospital and started walking. "It's just a scratch."

It took us 17 hours till not all personnel was needed anymore. Since the dizziness and the pain in my back started to pick up drastically I was one of the first to take a much-needed break

Night had already fallen on our city. Since I lived in the highest tower of the palace the view from my balcony was quite spectacular. Besides the numerous fires that burned in people's houses I could see far into the distance.

I sighed as I leaned my elbow on the balustrade, gazing longingly towards the horizon while fiddling with my blue dress. My servants, who I rarely used, had insisted to wash my clothes and that I should wear one of my more "fancy" dresses.

Since I wasn't planning on going anywhere, I obliged. My headache was too bad to argue anyway. As I stood there I couldn't help but think about Obi-Wan.

Today had been a real twist when it came to the situation here. Where we first tried to kill each other, we were now working together to fight a common enemy.

I didn't know what to think about it. It was weird knowing that I'd have to work together with the men who bombed Velen. Yet it all seemed to fit together perfectly.

"Good evening, princess."

I almost jumped in fright when his voice broke the silence. I turned around and saw Obi-san casually strolling towards my side.

"Obi-Wan." I breathed his name as I watched him come near. "You scared me."

"You seemed a bit lost in your thoughts, yes." He smiled as he looked at the view. "Not overthinking, I hope?"

"Let's leave that for the politicians." I chuckled and turned back to my primary position until I remembered my promise. "It's good that you came, Obi-Wan. I nearly forgot about our deal."

"Deal?" He frowned when I grasped his shoulders and practically planted him on a chair.

"Take off your shirt!" I yelled over my shoulder as I retrieved some supplies from my closet. I came back and looked at him.

"What?" He seemed utterly confused as his eyebrows knotted together,

"Don't get all excited, Obi-Wan. I'm only talking about your wound, remember? " I chuckled as I set all the supplies on the table next to him. I scooted another chair close to his and sat down.

"Right, of course." He hesitated at first. After an encouraging nod from me though he finally obliged, first taking of his belt and then his Jedi robes.

"Isn't that a bit too hot, all those layers?" I frowned as I watched him take off layer after layer of cloth. "You know, we're on a tropical planet."

"Yeah, well." He said as he took off the last garment covering his chest. He pulled it over his head, revealing a surprisingly toned chest. "One time I had to wear it on a planet covered with volcanoes. I'm used to it."

I had to hide my surprise and wonder after seeing him. He wasn't too muscled like most of the men here, he was lean and just toned enough. He had scars, too.

"Lyanna?" He tore me from my thoughts. "It's not that bad, is it?" He frowned as he looked down at his wound which was covered in dried blood.

"What?" I muttered in confusion as I looked at his eyes. He had absolutely no idea what he was doing to me, I was sure. It was like he didn't even know or understand the concept of love.

"No, no, of course not." I denied and wettened a cloth with alcohol. "I just... I'm surprised to see so many scars." I lied.

"Being a Jedi isn't exactly safe." He chuckled and tensed up lightly when I put the alcohol on his chest. Furthermore, he didn't even flinch.

"I can imagine." I whispered and continued with my work. He noticed my concentrated mood and so decided that he should just watch. I could feel his eyes on me the whole time, making my cheeks go light pink.

"Lyanna, I wanted to thank you." He said after some time when I was busy doing the las stitches. I looked up at him with one eyebrow raised. "For taking care of my men."

"Not all of them." My eyes darted back to my work.

"I know." Obi-Wan sighed, thinking about the losses of that day. He had brought 200 men with him to the planet. Only 40 remained of which 22 were wounded with 8 in a critical state.

I sighed, sitting back when the last stitches were done. "I just... Maybe if we hadn't been so keen on destroying and hurting each other we would've seen what was truly happening. If we had just been thinking rationally, we..." My voice got caught in my throat. "We could've saved those 140 men."

"There's no saying what could've happened, Lyanna." Obi-Wan whispered as he directed my face to his. "All we do know is that our minds were elsewhere and not only on fighting, but something far worse."

I frowned as I looked at him. "What?" I muttered. "What do you mean?"

Obi-Wan closed his eyes for a moment and sighed deeply. I could see pain in his eyes when he opened them again, leaving me wondering what had caused it. "Have you ever heard about the Jedi's rules? That attachments are forbidden?"

"I did, but..." I watched him as he tried to mask his feelings. "I don't understand. Attachments are what makes a person stronger. It gives one purpose and a sense of familiarity, happiness. Forbidding it is asking for people to disobey."

Obi-Wan chuckled sadly and casted his eyes down to the floor. "Then we have a different opinion about that." He said. "It only brings trouble."

I could feel frustration building up in my stomach. "Why? Why would you think that?"

"Because I experienced it first-hand."
