Today makes is two weeks sharp since I've been here, and I'd be lying if I say things has been easy for me. When I first got here, I gave myself a week to sneak out but I haven't even bothered to find the exit even though I can see some students tiptoes outside after curfew.
School hasn't been easy because they make going to classes compulsory and I loathe lectures. I wake up six thirty everyday to engage in some sessions with the headmaster. Some days it's meditation, others is poor attempt to get me to open up. I would have preferred it if he added boxing to the growing list.
Well, apart from the fact that most of the students here are terrible. I discovered the nightmares that almost brought everything down is still a hot topic around here. I'm getting popular but it's not in the good way, don't get me wrong I don't care about good but being labeled as a freak is ruining my street credibility. Part of them that don't mind getting punch in the nose makes it their life mission to remind me how of an outcast I am here. Ironic, I know, pots calling kettle black. Others avoid me altogether.
One might think after almost breaking her jaw that Penelope would know I'm not some doormat she can walk all over, but no, she still manages to piss me off from wherever she is. Just yesterday in class, Miss Locke, the Calculus teacher asked me to solve a question, which I couldn't solve. Penelope was quick to come to my rescue in a way of an insult.
"It appears Cami is struggling with answering the question, so I'll just solve it. Not a surprise though, I guess the only thing she's good at is ruining people's afternoon and screaming our heads off at night."
I didn't comment even though my palm was itching to slap the hell out of her, but violent isn't in my nature… lies, It's definitely in my nature, I just don't want to get another detention for allegedly assaulting a student. And I can't use magic against her, because, well I suck at doing magic and also Penelope is a coven leader and she's fucking good.
I have been attending my Witchcraft 101 class and it's been, well, let's say useful. I know some basic spells but I still can't do magic on my own and my supposedly magic mentor is on a break because I haven't been seeing Roman around after he ignored me following my nightmares. I was going to thank him for staying with me. I waved the asshole but he looked through me like I was fucking nothing and I haven't seen him since.
I glance out the window to see the driver pulling in, in the familiar parking lot of West High. Roman, that asshole said we have a game with them in a month. I didn't realize we journeyed from the woods to my old school. It's weird to be back here. If I had known we were coming here, I wouldn't have bothered to come but this is the only time I get to see outside the gate.
Fuck! I'm in West High. My friends are going to see me. Shit! The students are going to see me. And hiding in the bus isn't an option.
I doubt that they've missed me, we are all humans, and it's not as if I'm irreplaceable.
Out of all schools in the country, they picked The Vale against West High. It's like four hours difference. And I have never seen The Vale play, but I have seen Xander play like a pro. It's doesn't matter if they either of the schools loses because it's a Charity game.
Speaking of quarterbacks, Roman is the quarterback of The Vale and I'm not surprised. I just hate how the Headmaster made it compulsory for everyone to where the school's jersey: Yellow shirt with the school logo and blue short. Brie and Ari painted blue and yellow on my cheek, they say it's tradition.
As expected, Penelope and Alyssa are cheerleaders where Penelope is the captain of the squad with the guidance counselor, Miss Mulligan as the squad coordinator, and the librarian, Mr Groff as the school coach. I heard rumors from Ari that those in the cheerleading squad have no bone in their body because of how flexible they are. The twin convince me to tryout for the team but being a part of a team is not for me. They've been encouraging me to join other teams like drama club, music, art. They are trying desperately to make me belong but they don't know half of what's going on in my mind.
I snap out of my thoughts and stand up when the bus is properly parked. I look back to see the headmaster and Miss Mulligan having a conversation. I shake my head and walk out of the bus. I stalk behind Ari and Brie, those two are somehow always there when I need them. They are the only people I've spoken too, well, them and Nate. They might be creepy but they've showed me in multiple occasions that they there if I need them.
I step out of the bus after the twins, and look around the school. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually miss it here. I miss everything: the freedom I had, the pranks I pulled, the jokes I made and lives of the people I made miserable. It was all good and I miss it.
I hear my name and I turn to the direction, only for a ball to collide with my face.
Who would dare to throw a ball in my face? I can make a list. It was a direct hit and very intentionally.
"Cami Stark, as I live and breath." I remove my hand from my burning face and see the West High Tigers, the entire team and the cheerleaders. "I thought you were dead."
My friends or should I say former friends since Xander's way of saying hello is hitting me with a ball, anyway my former friends are here, they are all here.
"She looks pretty alive to me." April, the one they call the nicest one among us replies Xander, and I don't miss the way she clinging to him with her arms wrapped against his.
They weren't a thing two weeks ago, in fact Xander and Jessica were in a relationship. What happened?
His teammates chuckles at April's reply and I'm trying to figure out what's funny. I can't believe they are doing this me, I used to the one on the other side talking shit to people, not the other way round.
"Now I see why she blocked us," Justin adds. "She transferred."
"Hello Alexander.” I deliberately called him Alexander because he hates to be called that. I might be on this side of the line but I still have my mouth. They don't call me the meanest for fun. He glares at me, and I smile with satisfaction. "April." I acknowledge April, she looks the same in her cheerleading outfit. "I almost forgot about you," I say and look at Justin. "Justin, you're looking well for once. Nice to see you guys too."
Justin was hospitalized for substance abuse around a year ago and lost his skin color and weight. He looks like he's been working on himself, which makes me guilty somehow because I saw them almost three weeks ago and I didn't notice he's changing. And I called him my friend, I didn't even notice it.
"Why didn't you say this was your old school?" Ari and Brie asks.
I shrug. "Didn't think it mattered." Probably if someone had bother to inform that we were coming here, I would have prepared for this.
"It does, those guys are trying to bully you."
They can try though and see if I let them. And where the hell is Jessica?
"You are right, Justin. We are better off without her, just look at how she looks in that outfit, she's never followed a single rule in her life and never attended a game, but now she's here like a good puppy. I feel so sad for her." April shakes her head like she can't believe I'm here.
"I guess going to a boarding school for freaks will do that you," Xander jokes and they laugh.
I can feel The Vale students angry behind me. Our little conversation is starting to attract audience.
"I dare you to repeat it." They know better than to do this.
Xander chuckles with no humor. "You don't get to do this, Cami. You are on the wrong team, you are on the loser side of the coin."
I chuckle and take a step towards them, but I feel fingers curls around my wrist, pulling me back. I look back to see a familiar face.
"They are not worth it." She tells me.
I raise my eyebrows. "Jessie?"
She smiles and pulls me into a hug. "I missed you so much." At least someone's happy to see me, which makes me glad that I still have someone on my team.
I hear someone clear their throat behind us, I reluctantly pull away from Jessie. I notice that Xander and the others are gone. It's funny how people change in a short time, maybe I am the one that didn't know them well enough or I know them, just didn't think they'd behave like that to me. I mean I know they aren't the best set of people, I was a part of their team and this was how I behaved. They haven't changed and I don't think I have, I'm just seeing everything and everyone a little differently now.
"Let's go." Roman's demanding voice booms as the headmaster and Miss Mulligan get off the bus oblivious to what just happened.
"I'll have to catch up with you guys later." I inform the crowd and pull Jessie away from the crowd before the headmaster notices I'm gone, part of the speech he gave on the bus is for everyone to stick together but there's no way in hell I'm going to miss catching up with Jessica.
