Realization
Making my way back to the infirmary, I began to wonder what my mom was really like. According to her letter, her thirst for power made enemies and she wanted to keep me safe so she couldn't have been all bad. Maybe she was just coping or something, either way I would like to know more about her and what happened to her after she left me behind. Feeling as if Mr. D would be less then helpful about giving me answers, it would be better to find out on my own. Approaching the big house, I made sure to try to avoid being seen by Mr.D and mad my way around back where I saw both Ben and Eve walk out.
"You're finally awake." I said with a smile as I hugged Ben. "Yeah, surprised to be alive after getting struck by that blast." Ben said with a smile. "Did you do that?" Eve asked with a hint of anger in her voice. "No, that was all you two." I said as I crossed my arms in front of me, making an x "Besides, there's some new stuff going on." "Like what?" Eve asked. "Like being related to more then one God." I replied gesturing them to follow me back towards the cabins.
"Chiron said that yesterday during capture the flag you two and Arch were claimed by another God." I informed. "From the corner of my eye I could see Ben smiling to the point that he resembled the joker which made me think that his face may stay that way. "So who's the other God that claimed us?!" Ben asked excitedly. "Mr. D says that your grandpa was Zeus himself meaning that your dads were demigods." I answered him as we stood in front of my cabin. "So who exactly is Zeus, what exactly is he the God of?" Eve asked a bit confused by her brothers excitement.
"Zues is the king of the God's and the ruler of Olympus. He's the God if the sky and...." Ben paused as his brain started piecing all the information he'd gotten today before speaking again "...lightning!! He's the God of lightning and we created a lightning strike! Oh My Gods!!" Ben started to shout out getting extremely hyper and excited forcing me to try to calm him down. "Ben calm down, you know I hate it when you draw unnecessary attention towards." I told him as I grabbed his arms.
"Ow!" He yelped as he jumped back and out of my grip. Looking at him, I can see that his shirt sleeves were smoldering as if they were being burned. Looking down at my hands and saw that my palms were covered in a low dark ember red flame with green tips causing me to freak out a bit. 'That's my flame?' I heard one of the girls giggle in my head as she said that causing me to remember the hellhounds on my arm. 'Your flame? You can burn things?' 'Burn burn!' She giggled causing me to worry a bit.
Forgetting my little chat with the hellhound, I quickly apologized to Ben and notified them to go find Chiron before I headed into my cabin. Inside my cabin I walked over and sat on my bed as I watched the flames in my palms begin to die down and fade. Rubbing my hands together, they felt completely normal with no added warmth it heat which was good since there wasn't any pain or burns either. "There's more to this spell then I thought." I whispered to myself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Making sure that Ben didn't have any burns, we made out way towards the Demeter cabin where Chiron was currently standing. "Hey Chiron," Ben greeted as we approached him "Avery said that we should come to you after we wake up?" "Yes, that's correct." He said with a smile "Where's Avery, did he go to his cabin?" "He nearly burned Ben." I informed him as I jabbed the spot where his shirt was burned which caused Chiron to look concerned. "He didn't do it on purpose, I don't even think he knew he could do it." Ben informed as he glanced over at me
"Anyway," I said shrugging "he's in his cabin and seems like he needs some time alone." Nodding, Chiron turned back towards the Demeter cabin as Arch exited while carrying a big woven basket in his hands. "What are you doing?" I asked. "Moving into cabin three." Arch replied causing me to look over at the cabin with the shells and coral embedded into the walls. "No way! Your the son of Poseidon?!" Ben practically screamed causing several campers to look this way. "Could you have said that any louder, I don't think everyone heard you." I scolded at him which made him turn away from me. "Well anyway," Arch said "I'm his grandson apparently so I'm going to live in his cabin since there will be more space for me to practice and think."
"So does that mean we can move into Zues's cabin?" I asked hopefully as I really didn't want to stay another night in the Ares cabin. "It does but I wouldn't suggest moving from one cabin to another."Chiron informed. Without missing a beat, I quickly made my way towards the Ares cabin to gather my things out of my foot locker. Upon entering, I saw Clay throwing some of his stuff on an empty bed which confused me. "What are you doing in here clay?" I called out towards him which caused the boy to turn around. Looking at him, he seemed to look just like clay except that he had fury red highlights, tanner skin and brown eyes instead of green.
Staring at him, he seemed a bit confused before understanding what was going on. "My name's Ethan not Clay." He said nonchalantly "He's like my doppelganger, so people get us mixed up." As he was saying this, he grabbed a large one sided axe before heading out of the cabin. Shaking my head at realizing that there's a pair of lookalikes in camp, I grabbed my duffle bags, sword and my shield as I left the cabin. Shoving my way through the members of the cabin who were relaxing on the porch, I quickly made my way towards the biggest cabin that stood over all the others as I saw Ben casually leave his cabin.
Opening the doors, I was completely stunned by what the inside of the cabin looked like. In the center of the cabin stood an intimidating statue of Zues with several golden eagle statues with some being above or on the side of the alcoves. Despite the complete and utter lack of furniture and low rumble of thunder, the inside of the cabin still reminded me of a bank. As I took in the scene of what this cabin looked like compared to the Ares Cabin, the only thing it lacked was some beds and chairs. As I began planning where I wanted to set my bags and weapons down the room, there was a thunderous echo that rung throughout the cabin which caused me to reflexively throw my hands up.
Glancing up to see if there was a hole in the ceiling , I saw that there were no fractures or cracked in the dome ceiling but the moving mosaics with thunder bolts and clouds moving lazily about. Hearing the door open, I quickly straightened myself up and fixed my hair before turning to see Ben walk in with Jason following behind him. "Oh wow!" Ben exclaimed "This is amazing!" Jason smiled "So this is Cabin one." He said "Pick any of the alcoves you like, there are no furniture in here at all unfortunately but you can always buy what you need at the cabin store."
The moment he said that there were no furniture, I knew I wouldn't be staying here very long. 'I can't stay in a place with at least a bed and some chairs, this is ridiculous' I thought as I scanned the alcoves to see a sleeping bag rolled up in the corner of an alcove with several belongings that must belong to Jason. "So I'll allow you two to get settled in. If you have any questions then you can find me or Chiron." Jason informed before leaving the cabin. Not knowing whether I wanted to stay or not, I watched as Ben quickly made his way towards one of the alcoves with the golden eagle above it.
Deciding to try to make the best of this, I picked up my things from the ground and moved them into an alcove with the an eagle statue off to either side of it. Not wanting to possibly get crushed in my sleep by the chunk of metal, I sat down as I watched Ben pull out a sleeping bag. "Where did you get that?" I asked him. "One of the kids in cabin six gave me it as a moving out present." Ben replied as he looked back at me. Seeing that I didn't have anything to sleep on, he began to look concerned.
"I can go see if they have an extra one for you if you like?" He suggested. "If I need anything from you or needed your help then I would ask for it don't you think?" I snapped at him which seemed to shut him up and made him quickly turn around. Feeling the atmosphere in the room thicken Ben spoke up again. "What do you think we can do as the descendents of Zues?"he asked slowly which I shrugged in reply. "Do you think we can control the weather, or fly, or even lay down and make beds from clouds!" He began rambling, becoming increasingly louder the more he talked causing me to become even more annoyed.
"What if we can...!" Ben began. "Shut up!" I yelled "You honestly can't go five minutes without talking and getting carried away and you wondered why you never really had any friends." "Okay I'm sorry." He apologized which seemed genuine. Even though there was more I wanted to say, I felt as if he had enough for now. "I'm going to get some air, don't break anything." I told him as I grabbed my sword and left the cabin. Heading towards the training grounds, I looked for someone I could at least take my anger out on and to help me get better at fighting with this sword.
Arriving at the training grounds, I quickly noticed both Ethan and Clay were sparring against each other. It almost looked as if he was fighting a mere reflection of himself with the only noticable difference was that Ethan was using his axe which caused him to move a bit slower than Clay who was using two long knives. Watching as they went against each other, it seemed that Ethan was having a bit of a hard time drawing back his axe after each swing leaving him a bit open for a counter attack which he barely dodges at times. Looking at his axe, it seemed to be as long as he was tall and made from the same metal as my sword as well as the other weapons here.
As I watched he swing, it was clear that the axe was heavy which added power to it's swing but made it hard for him to recover from it which leaves him open a bit. I don't know why he would bother using an axe, not even the other kids of ares are crazy enough to stick with a weapon like that so I couldn't grasp why he would use it. Seeing as they we're taking a break and resting, I approached Ethan. "Hey, that was a good match." I complimented him. "Thanks, um... what's your name?" I asked. "Oh, it's Miller, Eve Miller." I stated to see if he would recognize my last name.
"Cool," he said with a smile which wasn't the reaction I was expecting "so what are you doing out here?" "I was looking for someone to spar with, are either one of you up for it?" I asked looking at both Ethan and Clay. Pulling out a small pouch made from snake skin, Clay uncapped it and drunk some of it's contents before handing over to Ethan and spoke up. "Can't, have to help with a personal cabin project." Not particularly caring to ask what his project was, I looked over at Ethan who had finished drinking from the snake skin pouch and handed it back to Clay before looking at me.
"Sure why not." He said as he stretched "I could use more practice and sparring with someone with one weapon instead of two should help alot." "Why do you use an axe? Wouldn't it be smarter to use a lighter weapon or a small one handed axe at least?" I asked as we took some steps away from Clay was currently still sitting. "My dad gave it to my mom as a gift. He wanted her to give it to me when I was old enough but unfortunately he wasn't expecting a son like me." "What's wrong with you?" "Compared to the other kids, I don't look as physically fit if you haven't noticed, so I look the weakest physically and to my father it's unacceptable. If you look weak them you are weak, that's the basic rule of combat for all of Ares children." He said dully as if he was use to being criticized for his appearance and skills.
"Wow that's terrible." I said as I drew my sword from it's sheath. "I'm use to it." He replied as he rested his axe on his shoulder. "Are you ready?" "Yeah, I'm ready so don't think I'm going to go easy on you." I told him which made him smile.
After settling into my new cabin with Percy and listening to all of his adventures he had when he first came to camp, I was partially exhausted. As I sat on the top bunk of one of the six bunk beds, I enjoyed the veiw of the windows looking out towards the sea. Hearing a knock on the cabin door and seeing Percy still taking his nap, I hoped out of bed and touched one of the bronze horse fishes on the ceiling in the process as I went to go answer the door. Opening the door, I saw Miranda standing there with a smile on her face with a girl standing of to the side of her. "Hey Miranda, what's up?" I asked
"Hey Arch," she replied "this is Willow and she was the person I told you about who could train you." I looked over at my new training instructor and saw that besides her hair being a dark brown with green streaks in it, she seemed pretty chill. She wore simple blue jeans and a short sleeve green top with what looked like green rope wrapped around her waist and dangling from the side of her hip. Seeing as she was currently wearing no shoes, I stared at her which she noticed and she smiled nervously.
Not seeing any harm in this, I shrugged my shoulders and went back to my bunk to grab my whip before following them towards the beach. As we arrived on to the beach, I saw the my horse laying down on the sand as it stared at the sea and paying little to no mind to us. "Hey," I greeted him " what are you doing?" 'Don't worry about what I'm doing, what are you doing out here?' He assed in a tone leaving which left no room for me to try to question him further. "My friends are gonna teach me how to use my whip." I informed him as I gestured to the whip dangling from my waist. 'If that's what your going to be doing then I suggest you keep your feet in the water.' He advised as he looked at Willow and Miranda 'Or not, it's your choice in the matter.'
Looking out over the water, I could see the son in the horizon slowly setting which means that we didn't have much practice time. Walking over towards them, I informed Willow that I was ready whenever she was which made her smile nervously. "Do you know any hand to hand combat or do you have another weapon?" She asked sweetly. "I have a break able bo staff." I replied in which she nodded. "So with the whip, I'm going to show you how to not hit civilians and teammates as well as personal safety. This way you won't hurt yourself either." "Okay, then afterwords you can show me the basics for fighting?" I asked with a smile. "Once you show me you can use it without hurting yourself and the people around you then we'll move on to some basic stuff." Nodding, I unbuckled my whip from my waist and grabbed the handle while letting the rest of it drop to the floor.
"His whip looks to be about ten feet right?" Miranda said as she looked at it. "Looks that way, so it seems like you were right." Willow suggested "But anyway, you need to learn how to bring the whip back to you since you can use the bladed end as a dagger. As she said this, she unhooked the green rope from the side of her waist and unraveled it revealing it to be a whip with three tails all ending in six inched bronze thorns. looking out towards the sea, she quickly drew her arm back before flicking it forward causing the whip to follow suit and stretch over the water to it's full length as it made a metallic snap in the air as if lightning struck wind chimes. As the whip seemed to give off the appearance of hovering in mid air, she flicked her arm back causing it to quickly return back to her in a blur.
Watching her carefully, I saw as she was able to catch the end of it where the three tails merged together. "Oh wow." I said amazed "That looks hard." "You'll get it." Willow said as Miranda handed me a Vine that was rolled up. "It's the same length as the whip." Miranda informed "but not as heavy so good luck." She said before walking off towards the cabins. Turning towards the water, I tried to repeat the motion Willow had done early. Flicking my arm out, I saw as the whip flew out and stretched over the water causing a 'snap' to ring out in the air. Seeing that it was heading towards the water, I quickly flicked my arm back causing the whip to fly back towards me. Not realizing how fast the return was I tried to duck out of the way, dodging towards my left I felt the tip of the whip strike my cheek causing a sharp pain.
Putting my hand up to my cheek, I felt that I was bleeding which caused me to carefully look at the tip of the whip. At the very top of it was a small thorn with a bit of blood at it's tip causing me to freak out a little. "I thought this was a practice lesson?" I asked. "It is, just be happy that it was a thorn instead of your actual blade. Not to know whether to feel relieved or not, I just stood there as I felt something behind me. Looking over my shoulder I saw the horse with the sun light reflecting if it's gem on its forehead. Starring at my scar, he shook his head before glancing back out towards the water. Remembering the advice he told me, I headed towards the lakes shore and stood in the shallow end to see what would happen. As I stood there, I began to feel something run up my legs as a strange sensation started to wash over me.
Looking down, I saw that the water from the lake was quickly climbing over my body causing my heart to skip a beat. As the water climbed higher I lifted my head up as it went pass my neck and up to my cheeks and ear before quickly reversing direction and flowing back down towards the lake. "Oh wow." Willow gasped. Feeling that the stinging was gone, I felt my cheek to confirm that there was no pain at all. Looking down at the surface of the water, I could see that there weren't any scars or anything which amazed me. "Oh cool, thanks you Syntrofos." I whispered as I admired how the water healed my cheek before grabbing the vine again. 'What did you call me?' He asked. "Syntrofos, it's your name isn't it?" I asked him
Refusing to answer, he walked away causing me to stare off after him and wondering what's with him. "Syntrofos.." Willow said "it means companion." "Really? " I asked. "Yeah, I thought you should know in case you didn't." "Thanks, so I should really get this thing down." I said as I readied myself for more pain from training.
After a long day of sparring and resting in the infirmary, I headed back towards my cabin to get cleaned up and put my sword away until I noticed Adrien exit his cabin. Turning my head back towards my cabin, I quickened my pace back towards the only Haven I had from Adrien seeing me like this. Seeing as I was merely a few steps from my Cabin, I suddenly heard Adrien call out my name. Acting as if I didn't hear him, I entered my cabin and closed the door before running over towards my alcove, passing Ben along the way and tried my best to make myself look presentable by brushing my hair and spraying some perfume before I heard a knock on the door.
Opening the door, I saw Adrien standing there with a sly smile on his face. "Hey, I was calling you." He stated. "Sorry, I had a lot on my mind." I apologized to him "So what's up?" "Oh nothing much, just wanted to know if you would like to sit next to me during the amphitheater while some of the Apollo kids play some songs." Feeling my face warm up, I nodded "sure, it seems like fun." "Great, I'll see you then." He replied as he walked off. Closing the door, I felt my whole mood lighten until I glanced over at Ben who seemed to be doing something.
"What are you doing?" I asked him in an authoritative tone. "Well I've been trying to figure out some stuff and watch." He said excitedly as he closed his eyes. As I stood their waiting, his hands began to make cracking sounds like firecrackers going off on the fourth of July. Before I could say anything, his hands had electricity running over them as if they were gloves before fading out. Ben looked extreme drained causing me to worry and seeing him smiling as if everything was ok made me angry.
"Are you insane, are you trying to kill yourself!" "No." "Then what's going on in your head, because that obviously is killing you!" "It's not killing me, that one just takes up way more energy. But after a nap and some food then I'm fine." "That one!!" I said hysterically. "Is this what you've been doing all day?!" "Yeah, and I'm going to keep doing it." He replied. "I don't think so. You're not..!" "You're not my mom!" Ben yelled back which cut me off "Stop acting like you're the boss of me because your not. While I'm here, I'll like to get stronger in any way I can unlike you who seems to only want to stay here for that guy and that this is the only place where those monsters can't get us! What happens when you're forced to leave, who's going to protect you? Your sword can only do so much, especially if you have no friends."
As Ben said all of this, my mind started to wonder back to what Avery was saying before the game of capture the flag. 'Could I really that self centered?' I thought to myself. Looking up at Ben, he seemed to be on the verge of tears which left me feeling awkward for I didn't know what to do. As I stood there speechless, he wiped his tears before leaving me in the cabin alone with my thoughts and the rumbling if thunder that echoed throughout the cabin.
