Chapter 3: Explanations

Sage eyes the young man in front of here before reaching towards the hand and grasping it for a handshake.

"It's a delight to see you here, Sage." Harry smiles.

'Delight my ass.' Sage mocks in her head.

"Come follow me." Harry smiles as he turns around and begins walking off in the opposite direction.

Sage is pushed by the two men in Harry's direction.

She would fight back and run. But that would just get a bullet to her head. Her life was too precious to lose. She had gone through so much and suffered, that dying would be all for nothing. She had to achieve something in life. And she would do that once she escapes this place.

As she is lead through a hallway with dark grey walls, Harry explains the origins of the association.

"The Unwanted Association was formed not too long ago. It's been up and running for about 25 years now. Any parents can deem their children (or child) as unwanted when they can clearly see their child will never amount to anything. They then send them here so that we can shape the young children into successful people. We do not like uselessness."

Sage is then lead through a large pair of doors. When she enters, she stares in disgust at everything around her.

This place reminded her of the old classic movie she watched called "Divergent". This place looked exactly like the place where the dauntless trained. But ten times filthier.

They walk through the place, passing the training room and the dining hall, until they reach a hallway of doors.

"There are many rooms here with four people each. You are in room 17 with three other members." Harry explains.

Sage nods, although she did not exactly pay attention. Instead, her attention was focused on what was in front of her.

There seemed to be two unwanted and they were following an old lady. The two of them looked straight forward and had no emotion behind their eyes. To Sage, they looked dead.

She wanted to further question this, but before she could, she was pushed into a room.

As she entered the room she saw two sets of bunk beds. Three people sat on each bed, one girl and two boys, leaving one bed empty. They all stared off at something, having the same emotionless eyes as the other unwanteds she saw just a moment ago. And just like the other unwanteds, they were dressed in a white top and shorts.

"I'll let you get situated. Enjoy your stay!" Harry smiles and speaks as if she was just escorted into a five-star hotel.

Harry steps out with the two other men and leaves Sage with her three roommates.

As soon as the door closes, the three people on the bunk soften their stiff shoulders and look at Sage with normal eyes.

"Hi, I'm Anna Stewart. I'm seventeen." The tall, blonde girl greets Sage.

"The name's Cole Bhard. I'm sixteen." The pale, blue eyed boy smiles.

"I'm Drake Ellis, but everyone calls me Drex. And I'm sixteen as well." The tanned boy explains.

"Well, nice to meet you all," Sage says in a confused tone. "I'm Sage."

The three of them stare at her as if she was crazy.

"Wait. You said your name is Sage? Like, Sage Lyell?" Drex questions.

"Yeah? How do you know my last name?" Sage replies as she tilts her head in confusion.

Drex flails his arms in the air. "Dude, everybody knows about you here! You are the famous Sage West Lyell."

"Ok. Seriously. What the hell? I'm not famous and how does everybody know me here?" Sage demands, eager for answers.

Cole stares at the brunette girl in confusion. "What do you mean? How do you not know? Don't you know how your parents were killed?"

Sage's dark brown eyes stare into Cole's azure blue eyes and she shakes her head.

"Well, I guess that's a story for another time." His voice starts out in an awkward tone and eases into silence.

Sage wanted to further question the boy, but she recalled what had confused her.

"Anyway, as I was lead here, two people we passed.. seemed... off? Like their eyes were.. zombie-like. And even you guys, you were like that too."

Anna speaks up. "Oh. Everyone here is brainwashed and disciplined to the leaders."

"Except for us." Cole adds.

"We call ourselves  'The Fakers'! We pretend to be brainwashed when around officials." Anna exclaims. "It makes us feel scandalous."

Drex rolls his eyes. "Anna, I honestly regret helping you. Shut up."

"You didn't even help. How about you shut up." Cole speaks rudely to Drex. Before Drex could shoot back an insult, Sage interrupts,

"Can someone please explain to me what's going on here?" She urges one of them to speak up.

"Oh my god! Ugh, you guys are so annoying and didn't even bother explaining the situation to the poor girl." Anna whines in high voice, causing Sage to cringe involuntarily.

Cole rolls his eyes and begins to explain, "Basically, when an unwanted gets here, they are brainwashed. To do that, they inject a serum into you which messes with your brain and then they put you through a series of illusions that make you disciplined to them since obviously some people here are not disciplined. But smart me," Cole begins to praise. "I messed with the system and managed to change the liquid in the needle right before and I pretended to be brainwashed."

Drex smiles, "The dude did the same for me when I first got here. Then we helped Anna for a reason only god knows."

Anna glares at the two boys and steps into the conversation, "but don't worry Sage, we'll help you too."

"Yeah," Cole started to speak. "They'll be coming by soon to brainwash you."

"Hold on. So this isn't some grand organization where everything is as perfect as they make it out to be."

The three of them shake their heads and Cole says, "No. They false advertise this association. They claim it's the perfect place for children to learn and help the nation. In reality, we are tortured mentally and we do all the labor. Once you're in, you can't get out. Even after you reach age eighteen."

Before Sage can further question, the door to the room opens.

Cole, Anna and Drex all stiffen up and look straight forward, feigning a brainwashed state once again.

At the door stands a man, wearing a dark green suit.

"Hello, Sage." He greets. "Hope you befriended your roommates. Oh wait, they can't talk unless I make I make them. Come with me. I'll make you just like them." He laughs a sinister laugh after his words.

Sage almost yelps as the man grabs her by the wrist and pulls her out the door. She hopes Cole and the others can help her.

But that would be too good to be true. She had to be smart.

She had to think and fend for herself.

Just like she always has.
