A Prowling Danger
Anger doesn't solve anything, it builds nothing, but, it possesses the power to destroy everything! Bondita was angry... But, instead of directing her anger towards the problem, she ended up being infuriated towards a person... The only person in the world who would believe her in a heartbeat, the only person to whom her happiness mattered the most!
In a metro moment of futile indignation, Bondita had walked out of their bedroom, sternly commanding Anirudh not to follow her out. Her angry steps marched towards the terrace garden, as she leaned against the terrace wall, darting her eyes into the unfathomable darkness outside.
'How could Barrister Babu be so inconsiderate?
How could he just turn a blind eye?'
Bondita's heart thudded with these questions as indomitable emotions started flowing down her eyes.
The nature too, had probably realised the futility of her shedded tears, and hence started to cry in reciprocation.
Bondita felt a droplet of water on her forehead, followed by another one and suddenly it was an unwelcoming shower that drenched her countenance without a warning.
For a moment, Bondita thought of running back inside the room, and clasping her Anirudh back in her arms to protect herself from this chilly rain. But, her impotent ego didn't let her follow her heart.
She stood there in the rain, as the shower drenched her body and soul, calming her slowly into senses.
'I shouldn't have... Should I apologise?' Bondita asked herself as her eyes gazed at the darkness outside, as if searching for an answer.
Suddenly, she narrowed her vision, as her eyebrows furrowed up in automation.
"Who's there?" She muttered softly, as her eyes traced the outline of a masculine figure lurking in the darkness in the Banglow estate, adjacent to the vegetable garden.
The silhouette emerged out from behind a maple tree and a sharp chill ran down her spine as she realised that the sinister shadow had raised his hand up, beaconing her to him.
Bondita swallowed hard, the raindrops had muddled her vision and she thought it would probably the best idea to call Anirudh first. But, in the next moment, a sense of false empowerment took her over.
'Why would she call the man who had refused to understand her!'
She tamed her heart with the answer as she tied her loose hair in a bun.
She took a deep breath and slowly walked down the stairs, reaching the main door leading to the garden.
She hadn't taken an umbrella, neither did she had any plans of sheathing herself from the rain.
But what about the stranger?
Bondita hadn't thought even once about the implications of her own safety as with every passing step she inched closer towards the lurking uncertainty.
She traced the maple tree at the south eastern corner of the estate and walked towards it desparately trying to shield her eyes from the large droplets.
"Anyone here?" She spoke out, as the rain muffled most of the sound.
"Bondita!"
A gruff male voice called her from behind, starting her as she turned around swiftly to see the owner of the voice.
"You?" Bondita murmured, swallowing a dry lump in her throat as she saw a shiny slivery knife drawn out from inside the man's drenched long coat.
"What are you trying... " Bondita muttered as the man inched forward, holding her hand and pressing her to the trunk of the maple tree.
"Suresh Da... Don't... " Bondita muttered again, but this time she looked straight into his eyes, as her hand held his fist that held the knife.
"You don't want to kill me, do you?"
Suresh looked at her face with a strange expression laced in his eyes.
He suddenly left her hand and paced a few steps backward, as his eyes continued to stare at her in disbelief.
"Oh... So thats all this is about..." Suresh let out a dry laugh. " So you think I have killed Kshitija!"
Bondita moved forward towards him.
"Yes. I know you have!"
"Huh... Fine I have... I have killed her... Or, if I may say I caused her death, but, do you even know what she had in mind that night when she had walked inside this Banglow?" Suresh's voice was laced with pain and abhorrence.
"Bondita, Kshitija had carried a knife to kill Anirudh! And, had I not have pierced the knife in her throat, she would have killed me as well."
"Why would she want to kill Barrister Babu?" Bondita asked loudly, in desparate attempts of defeating the sound of the rain with her rage.
"You are naive! Bondita, I had gauged you to be someone smarter." Suresh paused brushing the water away from his face.
"Do you know Kshitija used to scream your husband's name while climaxing with me inside her!" Suresh let out a sinister laugh." You silly woman... And, you are asking why would she kill him?
Infact, you were her target too, Mrs Bondita Roy Choudhury!"
Bondita looked at the shiny knife in Suresh's hand as her heart suddenly started to palpitate in an unknown apprehension.
"Why are you holding a knife?" She asked him suddenly.
"Because, I want you to kill me with this if what you said in the hospital is true..." Suresh paused. "And, if it's not, then I'd kill you for playing such a nasty game with me... So, tell me Bondita... Whatever you said, is it true?"
Bondita swallowed hard. By now she had realised the gravity and danger of the situation. She cursed herself for coming here alone, she cursed herself for leaving the room, she cursed herself for not listening to her Barrister Babu... But, she couldn't think much longer, as Suresh's gruff voice blurted the question once again.
"Tell me..."
Bondita took a deep breath and started to speak.
"Yes... It's true whatever I said." She paused to arrange her next set of words carefully.
"Kshitija was pregnant with your child when you had killed her... So, Suresh Chatterjee... You killed not one but two lives... And, you should pay for it!"
