In a world of shattered mirrors, attacking one another is an everyday normality. However, attacking is for cowards. That's the way it is, for, heroes stand their ground and defend.
Raimoti was successful in finding her father's revolver. She had no idea what awaited her outside the building, may be death... But, at the moment, she was prepared to defeat it, even worse!
A few more gunshots, but she was clueless who shot whom, and standing behind the hiding of the wooden doorway she saw two uniformed police officers, not white-skinned, but Indian. She saw another man too, right infront of the door behind which she had positioned herself, wearing a simple kurta and dhoti, the colour of which she couldn't make out, for he was covered with blood all over.
"Thats not Satyakirth, that's not..."
Raimoti raised the revolver at one of the policemen who had pointed his gun towards the man in dhoti. She tightened her grip on the trigger, and the blood-clad man suddenly turned his head and looked at her in the eye. One glance, and two consecutive gun shots... First by the officer, and then by Raimoti, and both the men fell on the ground, together, in a choreographed sequence, and both had bullet holes on their skulls.
Her first kill!
Raimoti felt every muscle of her body, suddenly aware of her power, her capacity, her strength...
She had to find Satyakirth, she had to save the world... from whom, that she would determine later.
Raimoti rushed out of the building. All she knew was in the space of a single breath, she saw two men taken out. Who were these policemen, and how had they come to know of their plan? Uniformed policemen didn't just appear out of the woodwork at random, especially when they were working as a team. There had to be someone who tipped them off somehow!
Raimoti flinched, for the first name that came to her mind was that of her father's.
She ran straight towards the shadowed bushes across the door, running through the stony pavement, and then she ran across someone who could move nearly as fast as she could.
Satyakirth!
He almost pulled her behind the bushes, and saved her from an eminent bullet wound on her back, the metal slashed at her and she twisted and dodged through the throng shrubs in full defense.
"What are you doing here?"
Satya growled softly, his eyes narrowed, and his hands busy shooting at the direction of the attackers.
Raimoti saw with widened eyes how he shot with both hands, in perfect sync, almost like a poetry!
An ambidexter, exactly what she had read! And now infront of her eyes... The legend himself!
She gasped.
"I came to fight with you." She remarked, and positioned herself beside him, her eyes focused on the enemy infront.
"You were right. It's your father."
Satya spoke again, his hands never ceasing in action.
"Where?"
"Nine o clock."
Raimoti turned her head towards the direction and saw her father standing behind a police jeep, two uniformed policemen standing infront in protection.
Boom!
Raimoti shot one of them, instantly, on the head, making him collapse on the ground like a rag doll, and the other one pointed his gun at their hiding place and started to shoot in a randomised defence.
"Shit! He now knows where we are!"
Satya hissed and rolled down on the ground, dodging the incoming bullets.
Boom!
Raimoti shot him too!
"Damn! You're good." Satya gasped, ducking his head, as he pressed Rai's head too, making her duck like him.
"I had told you, I'm good." She chuckled.
"Shit! Neelmoni Mukherjee..."
Satya had only uttered the words, pulling her to his chest, and Raimoti felt a firey metal grazing her left arm, missing her body only by an inch.
Two bullet wounds in one night!
Rai flinched her face in pain.
Neelmoni had picked up a gun from one of the fallen British police, and was now shooting at them in an unmannerly way, haphazardly, and Satya rolled on the ground, pressing Raimoti to his chest firmly, and shooting at him in counterattack, careful enough not to kill him.
Neelmoni shot again, this time right on them, and the bullet grazed through Satya's earlobe, and they both shuddered at the vibration.
"Enough!" He growled, and one shot, hitting Neelmoni right on his leg, and the old man fell on the ground with a loud scream.
"Did he die?"
Raimoti's face was hidden in the crook of his blooded neck, and she gripped his shirt with all her might, muttered the courage to ask the question.
She too was bleeding.
"No. Just his leg." Satya hushed.
Raimoti looked up, and positioned her revolver again, shooting in the same direction as Satya.
"How many more men?"
She hushed.
"Eight." He shot again. "Seven now!"
Raimoti pressed her lips and smiled, and
Satya glanced quickly at her, and as if instinctively, grabbed her shoulder, pushing her down on the ground. Raimoti writhed in pain, but she evaded another bullet successfully.
"Thanks." She groaned.
Boom!!
It was louder this time, deafening... A grenade!
"We've to move from here, they know our place."
Satya gasped.
"You see that tree? Beside the wall... You run and hide there."
"And you?"
"I'll be on your trail." He hushed.
"First, I'll cover for you, distracting them and then once you reach, you do the same for me... Alright?"
Raimoti nodded.
"Where are your men?"
"Dead. Both."
"And the rest?"
"Left. They had clear instructions."
"So it's you and me?"
Satya looked at her and smiled.
"You're stuck with me Miss Mukherjee, I had warned you."
"It's an honor Satyakirth Sen."
She smiled back.
They both awaited a clearance, and Satya yelled, "Now!"
Raimoti got up and ran, with all her might, and then dropped to the ground, as several bullets whisked over her head to embed themselves in the wall and tree trunk, she shuddered. A sharp, burning pain shot down her back and she knew one of them had grazed her. She hoped like hell it wasn't fatal.
But where was Satya?
The entire ground was smokey, and the air reeked of gunpowder, and as the policemen fired more bullets at Raimoti, and she threw herself backwards over the shrubs, behind the tree trunk to put something solid between her and her opponent. Satya hadn't reached yet, and with the speed of the bullets flying towards her, she only had a moment to decide on her next action, but, then she she froze when she saw a massacred dead body huddled beside her, eyes wide, a sharp branch of the tree poking out of his bloodstained uniform.
"Ahhh....ummm!"
It was like a reflex and she let out a loud scream, in terror, but then a firm hand had grip her body from behind, muffling her scream with his palm.
"Satyaa!!"
She turned around and jumped in his arms, making him fall on the grass, and she fell with him too.
"Shh...Shh.. it's alright...I'm here..."
He words were a soothing whisper in her ears, and suddenly the entire world fell silent.
The bullet fires had stopped, as if miraculously, and Rai raised her head to look into his eyes.
"Are we going to die tonight?"
She was aligned on top of him, his arms grabbing her body.
"Are you scared?"
He smiled, and suddenly Raimoti felt a strange feeling creeping up her stomach... A feeling of losing, a feeling of never seeing him again.
"I didn't want to lose you."
"Neither do I."
He murmured, the eminent possibility of death had taken away all their inhibitions.
"Why isn't anyone shooting anymore?"
She asked again, her heart pounding in an unrhythmic beating, as she felt Satya's dry lips on her forehead.
"They are preparing... Probably positioning themselves on the roof."
"And us?"
Satya sighed.
"Is there anything that you haven't done Raimoti?" His emerald orbs were intensified on hers. "Any final wish?"
Raimoti narrowed her eyes.
"I haven't done a lot of things." She gulped.
"I have never even sweared in my life."
Satya grinned at her words, her cheeks were bloodstained, blood had clotted in the corner of his lips too.
"Then swear now."
Raimoti gasped sharpy.
"Fu... Fuck!" She swallowed.
"Fuck you!"
Satya chuckled.
"Alright, Fuck you too, Miss Mukherjee."
In a terrible flash the ground was torn into pieces, a shuddering sound, and a blaring constant beep in the ears.
A grenade had dropped a little away from them, and it felt like crumbling walls and a sense that all that was good in the universe had cried out in pain.
Raimoti breathed unsteadily, her face buried in his chest.
"What's your last wish?"
Satya didn't reply, and she looked up.
His eyes were closed, and she slapped him on his cheeks, his face covered with black soot.
"What's your last wish Satyakirth Sen?" She let out a suppressed scream, and Satya opened his bloodshot eyes and smiled at her, his teeth had blood in them, he was hurt!
"I want to fuck you. "
He grinned, mindlessly, half concious.
Rai felt a twitch in her heart, and then a deafening silence, that constant beeping sound inside her head had amplified. Satya was saying things, but she couldn't register them, she could register nothing!
His words had acted as some sort of trigger, some sort of a sign, and Raimoti just smirked, a sinister smirk!
This can't be it!
This can't be the end!
Her hands were pressing on his body, running down, and she felt his tight well sculpted muscles, and she felt the grenade too, attached to his suspenders.
Raimoti gulped, and looked up, passed Satya's face, and infront of her eyes, she could see the half buried window of the basement, the one which she had opened.
Satya was mouthing something, but, she couldn't hear, and then, with all her might, she got up, pulling the grenade from his body.
Satya's grip had loosened and Raimoti sat up and closed her eyes, only a fraction of a second, remembering her childhood day when she used to ace in short put.
All in a daze, and she threw the ball, and her target was the window.
One chance, and she didn't miss it!
Raimotiii....!"
Satya's voice rang in her ears, as she sat there like a status, and then she felt his body on hers, rolling her down on the ground and sheathing her from the impact of the blow... But, perhaps it was only a little late, just a little. The grenade did its job, blowing up inside the basement, it's blast had made fragments of the broken wall fly towards them. Raimoti felt one on her forehead, a hard hit, and the world faded away slowly infront of her happy eyes.
"Remember what you said..." She smirked mischievously at him, her eyes half closed and Satya pressed her close to his chest.
Another blast, the boxes with grenades... It was way louder this time, like a volcanic eruption, and then an earthquake!
Raimoti gasped and Satya's face contorted in pain, as the large tree fell near them, it's branches sheathing the two from the impact and debris of the blast.
Satya smiled.
"You did it."
I blew my own house." Rai smiled too, blood mixed with soot had covered her beautiful face with an emblem of bravery.
"Now, you'll have to take me with you, wherever you go." She panted.
"It'll be an honor." Satya moved strands of her disheveled hair from her forehead, making her smile again.
"Rai..."
He called her, but her eyes had closed already.
"Rai... I love you..." He hushed, and smiled to himself at his sudden self realisation.
The blast had ripped her off her senses, making her drift to the land of dark dreams, her mind unable to register any part of the reality, and her lover, her Lochinvar, pressed his ears to her chest, the faint beating of her heart was the sweetest music he had ever heard.
"I love you so much." He hugged her again.
