Blessed in the Moonlight

In the scanty moonlight she clearly saw Batuk waving his torch at her, gesturing her to come down. Raimoti thought for a moment. This was the same man who had refused her love only this morning, it was the same man for whom she was pinning all day. She had never shedded tears for any man, until now, and seeing the cause of her sorrow standing below her window, she couldn't help but gaped at the surreal romanticism of the situation.

Batuk was clearly able to see her standing at the window showered in the bright artificial electric light. He saw her keep the binoculars and raised her right hand asking him to wait.
Batuk breathed out his anxiety in the dark.

Raimoti had quickly brushed her open hair and dabbed a little pink on her lips before dashing out of her room. Despite being aware of the outside chill, she intentionally didn't take a shawl or made any attempts to cover herself. The flimsy off-white gown very lavishly highlighted the seductive curves of her body, and Raimoti absolutely knew how to flaunt her femininity.

"Hey... Sorry... I mean I didn't mean to... Um..." Batuk chuckled nervously as Rai slowly walked towards him and stood infront.

"You didn't mean to what? Sneek up at midnight like this? Or insult me in the morning?" Rai crossed her arms, throwing the words directly at him.

"Both." Batuk muttered slowly.
"Miss Mukherjee... Raimoti... I didn't mean to make you feel bad in anyway. And, and I'm deeply sorry to have caused you inconvenience." He folded his hands together and joined them in an apology.

"And what about my inconvenience now?" Rai raised an eyebrow as Batuk looked quizzically at her.
"You made me walk out in this cold midnight, almost shivering my heart out... What about that?" She teased him.

"Oh... I'm so... genuinely sorry about this as well." Batuk paused as he saw her lips shinning in the faint white glow of the moon.
"Rai, I... I mean, I could've waited till morning. But I couldn't help myself from coming here now. I wasn't even sure whether I'll get to see you, but I just had to try."

Rai stood there like an artistic stone statue, bathed in the silvery light, her beauty radiating like an enchanted spell, captivating Batuk's mind.

"Good that you didn't wait till morning. Because I'm feeling particularly generous now." Raimoti turned around to leave, her long open traces fluttering in the gentle cold breeze.

"Rai!" Batuk called her.
"I had something..." He looked at the jute sling bag he carried, hesitating for a moment as his eyes met hers once again.

"What do you have for me?" Rai furrowed her eyes in curiosity, turning back and inching closer to him.

"It's nothing really... Very silly of me." He smiled awkwardly as he pulled out a red garden rose from the bag and held it infront of her.

Rai gasped.
"It's perfect!"

"Is it?" Batuk scratched his head and bit his lips in embarassment.

"Yes. It's perfect." Raimoti's eyes shone up bright, competing with the moon for a moment before she broke out into a suppressed fit of laughter.
"It's your first time giving rose to a woman I gather." She came a little closer.

"Um... Not really. I pluck them for Bondita all the time... I mean... Whenever she..." Batuk looked at her eyes and stopped in mid- sentence and mouthed slowly.
"No... This is my first time..."

"I too thought so." Rai rolled her eyes at him seductively making him gulp.

"Can we be friends atleast?" He blurted out as to his relief Raimoti nodded her head slowly in approval.

"What are you carrying inside that bag? They are making an awfully lot of clanking noise." She said instead.

Batuk's face suddenly brightened at her question, clearly relieved at the reduced heat that the question heralded between the two.

"These are medicines, Rai. For some wounded friends I'm headed to."

"What kind of medicines?" Rai asked.

"The basics, quinine and some choloform in glass bottles." Batuk replied.

"That's too basic Batuk Babu." Rai's expression suddenly changed into something unfathomable, strong yet compassionate.

"I know, but you know we don't have access to anything more than this in the medical shops. I got the chloroform from college."

Raimoti lifted the rose, taking a puff of its characteristic smell thoughtfully.

"I should leave now." Batuk remarked.
"Thank you for...."

"Wait here. I'll be back."
Without letting him complete his words, Rai quickly ran inside the building, as Batuk stood there alone, contemplating his next course of action.
It's been almost ten minutes and as he finally turned around towards his motorcycle to leave, Rai called him from behind.

"Batakrishna Babu."

Batuk turned around only to see her standing with a cardboard carton in hand and from the looks of it, Baruk knew it was heavy.

"Sorry it took me sometime, this is heavier than I thought." Rai kept the carton on the grass and smiled brightly at him.

"What's in it?" Batuk narrowed his eyes as he sat down to see it's content.
"Painkillers!!" He gasped.

"Yes, and Betadine, and Belladonna. The morphine is less in number, but I can get you more next time." She smiled again.

"My god... Rai these are priceless... You have no idea how much these would mean... " Batuk's voice choked in excitement and gratitude.
"How did you..."

"My father is the Raibahadur, remember?" Rai smiled.
"All the medical and ammunition shipments from London comes to our basement directly from Calcutta port."

Batuk nodded his head as he folded his hands once again thanking her with all his heart.

"I know what kind of 'friends' awaits you for treatment at night, Batuk Babu." She paused.
"And, I want to do everything I can for them... I too, have read the morning newspaper after coming back."
She forced a smile on her face as Batuk noticed a soft glisten in her eyes... And he knew this glisten was not for him but for their motherland.
"I have something else for you as well, a return gift." She held his hand and placed a rectangular golden bar on his palm.
"It's dark chocolate, from London... It's sweetness is a little bitter, just like me I guess... Have them, and may be... remember me if possible."

Rai turned to leave. The air suddenly felt silent as Batuk heard that familiar uproar inside his heart. It was again like that moment when he had driven her home, suppressing the vehement urge to pull her closer to him. But all he could do was push her away.

"Goodnight, Raimoti." Batuk murmured.

"Goodnight."
A sadness veiled Rai's face and he saw her slender mesmerizing frame walk slowly away from him.
Now or never, his heart thudded and in a lightning moment he ran towards her, and as she turned around to see the source of his inching footsteps, he almost pounced on her, cradling her soft body in his arms, and lifting her up from the ground.
Rai reciprocated his actions, snaking her arms around his body with all her strength, as if never to let him go.

"Rai... I... " Batuk tried to speak as Rai hushed him by pressing her lips against his.

"Shhh! Don't talk. You are extremely bad with words." She moved her lips up to kiss his nose.
"Action speaks louder..."
And this time it was Batuk's turn to return the favor. Without letting her complete the sentence he let her stand on the ground and cupped her face, as his lips filled the gap in between her parted lips, red and puffy.
The moonlight showered generously on them as the passion in her heart collided with the gratitude in his, making their lips meet in a romantic poetry.

'I love you Batuk', Rai thought with her closed eyes, savouring every bit of his taste.

'You are an amazing woman, Raimoti.', Batuk thought, giving in to the taste of her tongue dancing inside his mouth.
