Chapter 5
"It all began fifty years ago." Began Shuttle. "The White Witch ruled Narnia and kept it under ice and snow. We three dwarves shamefully admired the power she had and desired a share in it."
The second dwarf, Shuffle, who had a green hat and dark hair, countinued. "We were eagerly welcomed and flurished during her reign. Time passed on, then you and your siblings arrived. The Witch panicked. Then that horrible day." He finished with a catch in his throat.
The last dwarf, the eldest went on. "A day we wish we had never lived to see. The Witch was particularly pleased as we traveled that dark night. Torches burned brightly as we walked that long way. At last we arrived at the stone table. Among the crowds of horrible creatures there was gleeful talk of a sacrifice that night. At that time we did not care for innocent lives, only of ourselves."
Shummle stopped and Shuttle took over the tale. "Feet began to stomp and battle cries rang out as the victim arrived. A lion A beautiful and majestic lion. We watched as it humbly came near. No threats it made though it could have easily destroyed us all. Before long the beast was tied, shaved and beat down. We watched on at the unbelievable sight of this peculiar sacrifice. By then our eyes were opening to the evil we had done but we could do nothing. The lion was killed. We slipped away from the large gathering and fled far far away in hopes to escape our past.
Here Renchion spoke. "That is where our tale begins. Indeed the dwarves fled far, all the way to our country which lays south of the Lone Islands. They came weak and weary. So badly that they were caught stealing food from the market. They were brought before the court and sentenced to work for the people they had stolen from. The dwarves worked in my home for two years. We become good friends."
Tranhil picked up the story. "I and the queen-"
Edmund immediately looked to Sindrilan. "Are you a queen?"
Sindrilan gave a smile. "Does it surprise you, my king?"
Edmund shook his head. Their first meeting he had noticed she was different somehow. A regal air laid about her. No, Edmund was not truly surprised.
Tranhil cleared his throat and countinued. "The queen and I had often visited Renchion as we are old friends. Before long the dwarves had conquered our hearts as well."
Shuffle spoke up then. "We thought we would live forever in the home of Renchion but then just a few short months ago we began to thirst for Narnia. We had not forgotten our past and the evil we had done for the witch but we could not shake the desire to go."
Edmund was beginning to understand where this story was going.
"It was I who told them to go home." Sindrilan said. "They greatly feared returning as they did not know what they would find. A ruling witch, angry that her servents had fled? Or a good and free people seeking revenge. Once we received news that Narnia was again free, we three were to follow after and speak to you and your siblings about the dwarves."
Edmund frowned. "Why do you not just explain things at dinner tonight?"
Tranhil shook his head. "The dwarves seemed to have made quiet a scene with their roaming through the woods and making such a racket. When we were warned of the odd occurrences we knew it would be folly to wait, as the Narnians seemed to be planning their own expedition to discover the truth and prehaps flush them out."
"I brought up the subject at dinner to see what would become of it." Said Renchion. "And you, king Edmund, expressed much intrest in the matter. We decided to see what action you would take."
"You followed me here? But you said you were on your way to Archenland."
Tranhil nodded. "Yes, that was not a lie. We had planned to go there to discuss trade between our countries.
Edmund frowned as he tried to absorb all of this information. Edmund turned his attention to the dwarves.
"So you are the mysterious tribe!"
Shuttle quickly raised his palms in self defense. "We ment no harm Sire. We only wish for mercy and forgiveness."
Shummle shook his head sadly. "We have done so much evil to even dare ask for forgiveness."
"I wish we could apologize to that lion." Shuffle said quietly.
Suddenly the tunnel seemed brighter. The ground became more comfortable. Edmund beamed as he saw Him.
"Aslan!" He exclaimed and jumped to his feet to meet the lion. Immdiently he winced in pain as he forgot his arm.
The great Lion walked toward the boy and let out a breath on his sling. Edmund smiled as he felt the pain vanish. He took off his bandage and bowed before the Loin.
Aslan turned to the three strangers. Sindrilan, Tranhil and Renchion knelt before him.
"Welcome friends." He said kindly.
Then turning to the three dwarves, who were frozen in fear, he looked at them curiously.
"You wished to see me?" His tone was not mocking or rude. Simply stated honestly.
Shummle stepped foward. "Are- are you the great Lion who was slain by the Witch."
A very low, almost inaudible growl rumbled deep within the Lion. "Yes I was slain. But those of an innocent heart who give their lives on the stone table as a sacrifice for others will rise again."
"He is a ghost come to haunt us." Shuffle whispered to Shuttle.
Aslan turned to the disbelieving dwarves. "You doubt my word? Come, touch my mane that was shaved."
Shuffle stood up as if he had been waiting for such an invitation and stepped close to the Lion. Hesitantly, he brushed this dirty fingers over the golden mane and gasped.
"It is Him!"
He then bowed and began to weep. Shuttle and Shummle came foward and knelt also.
"Forgive us dear Aslan, I wish the terrible thing had never happened."
"Dry your eyes children, all is well."
The great Lion then turned to Edmund. His eyes grew serious.
"A small army is approaching."
Edmund raised his eyebrows and glanced at the humbled dwarves. He knew they were in danger. Edmund wasted no time. With a renewed strength that only Aslan can give, he hurried through the long tunnel that led back out in the woods.
