Chapter 4
Lucy stopped at the top of the grand staircase. That morning as she had dressed, she fought a battle in her mind. To confront Susan or not.
The battlefield was wide and deadly as both sides made their point clear. Fears flew from both directions. Lucy had stood before her mirror as she brushed her hair. Her face was drawn in concentration as she heard both armies attack. Finally, finally, the battle was over; as was Lucy's tolerance. Her mind clear and a plan made, she left her room and headed down to breakfast, but not before placing her crown on her head.
At the staircase, she took a deep breath and descended. She immediately took in the tension that hovered in the morning air.
Peter was the first to notice Lucy's appearance.
"Queen Lucy, we have been waiting for you."
Lucy looked at her other siblings. Each held a solemn look with a hint of worry. Lucy took her seat quickly.
"As this is my first time announcing something like this, I shall come right out to tell you." Pausing, Peter looked over at Edmund.
Lucy noted that Ed gave a slight nod of encouragement. At that moment she was able to remember that these kings of Narnia were still just children from England.
Peter continued. "Followers of the White Witch are growing in the north. Blackhoof the centaur has heard rumors of an army being formed."
Edmund spoke then. "Peter and I are leaving today to go to battle against them."
Susan remained silent while Lucy gapped in amazement.
"Are we to go to battle as well?" Lucy asked, perhaps a bit too eagerly.
"No Lucy it is dangerous." Answered Edmund.
"It's dangerous for you also!" She responded quickly.
"Lucy." Susan said in a warning tone.
Lucy ignored her sister and looked pleadingly at her eldest brother. "Let me come Peter, please!"
"No Lucy. You and Susan are to stay here at Cair Parevel." Peter replied evenly.
Lucy could feel her eyes begin to moisten. This was not going at all according to her plan. Even worse was she felt a single tear fall down her cheek. The remainder of breakfast, Lucy choked down her meal and said nothing.

Later that afternoon Lucy and Susan were found standing by the gate as they bid their brothers and their fellow soldiers off to battle. Centaurs, fauns, cheetahs, bears, dwarves and tree people alike marched onward as they followed their proud kings.
The sun shown brightly and gleamed off the many shields and armour as they marched by. The Narnian banner fluttered proudly in the wind and there was an unrelenting air of excitement. This was to be the first battle between evil and the new kings of Narnia. A lot was depending on this battle.
Little Lucy stood by her sister's side and looked on at the army, fervently wishing she could be in the midst of it all. Instead she was a mere spectator, waving them off.
The last of the soldiers marched past and with it, any last minute hope that Ed or Peter would look back and say,
"Come along Lu, we need you!"
Although the chances of this were slim, this was Narnia after all and quite a quantity of unexplainable events had taken place in Lucy's life since she first walked into that fateful wardrobe. But alas, all that remained of the army was the dust that had been stirred up. Her hopes crumbled.
Beside her, Susan finally spoke.
"I suppose it is time for our music lesson now." She said this as she turned to leave, expecting Lucy to obediently follow.
Instead of following, Lucy stood her ground.
"Susan I need to talk to you."
Susan turned slightly, almost in one swift graceful movement.
"What about?"
"I do not wish to learn needlework and landscape paintings. I want to be a real queen of Narnia."
Susan gave a confused look.
"You are a real queen of Narnia."
Lucy shook her head in frustration.
"I knew you would not understand."
"Lu, you are not making sense." Replied Susan.
"You are such a bore!" Lucy shouted, as it was the only thing she could think to say.
She then turned and ran off toward the grassy courtyard. Ignoring the shouts that came from her sister, she did not stop running.
