Intermission Chapter

1989

The family Chevrolet Celebrity pulled up to the pound and turned off. Gwendolyn turned around to face her kids. "We know how much Rusty's death affected you two, so we've decided to let you guys get a new dog. Now this dog is not gonna replace Rusty. She watched you two grow up while you two will watch this one grow up."

Rusty was the Anderson Family’s Golden Retriever who had died the day before. She was a ripe 12 years old and had passed peacefully in her sleep. Her death had been noticed the morning after by the kids when they went to go play with her. She had been four by the time Micheal was born, and he was incredibly attached to the dog. However, she'd already been eight by the time Heather was born, so she had never really connected with the dog.

"Momma, I don't wanna." Micheal sniffed and rubbed the runny snot from under his nose.

"Micheal, the new dog isn't going to replace Rusty, ok." Gwendolyn smiled before getting out to open the door for Micheal.

"I can't wait to get a puppy!" Heather said, shaking violently in her car seat. Kane opened her door and took her out of the seat. The family walked in through the glass doors. Gwendolyn and Kane talked to the receptionist, but Micheal wasn't listening, and Heather was moving crazily like a rabid animal on her leash.

The woman let them into the back to look at all the dogs. Heather quickly dragged their dad to the end of the room as she looked at all of the dogs in about a second at max.

Micheal looked at a few of the dogs. They were cute, but they weren't Rusty. He went up to his mom to tell her that, but she was talking to the receptionist. He was about to go back to looking at dogs when he heard a noise. He looked behind his mom and the receptionist to the slightly open door.

Micheal sneaked out and looked around the lobby for the source of the cries. He made his way into another room. The room had one wall that was just animal cages, like for rabbits or something small. However, they were all empty. He made his way to the opposite wall where the calling was coming from.

He looked into a cage to see a tiny baby kitten facing him, eyes closed and calling out. Micheal was in a trance as he watched the tiny creature try to move around on her tiny legs.

Suddenly the door opened again and a girl walked in, she paused when she saw Micheal. "Oh, hello there." She waved and walked over, noticing Micheal stared at the kitten. "Ah, I've seen you've taken a liking to her."

Micheal looked at her in confusion, "Why hasn't she been adopted yet?" He asked with childish innocence.

"She's the runt of her litter. All her other siblings have already been adopted. No one wanted her cause they thought, um, well... they didn't want their kids to get attached to her." She said, not wanting to tell the strawberry blonde the kitten would probably die.

"Can I hold her?" Micheal said, looking at the brown fur ball again. "Uh, sure?" The volunteer opened up the cage and sat the kitten in his hands. The baby cat instantly calmed and stopped crying out, instead leaning to Micheal's warmth and purring. Micheal started petting her tiny head, and the girl was taken aback.

"Wow, that's the first time she's stopped crying since her last sibling was adopted. She must really like you." Micheal looked up at her, "Really?" She nodded.

Micheal looked back at the kitten as it raised its head, slowly opening its eyes at him. The two of them gasped as she stared at him, purring at the blonde peacefully.

Suddenly, his family burst into the room. "Oh Micheal, there you are!" His mother ran over to hug him, but he stopped her, holding the kitten up to her. "Can we keep her?"

Gwendolyn looked surprised, "Don't you want a puppy?" Micheal gave her the sad baby eyes look, and she instantly retracted the statement. "I mean, of course you can keep her." This was followed up by Heather throwing a fit from behind them."I WANTED A PUPPY!!" She started screaming, crying, and Kane took her to the car.

As Gwendolyn filled out the paperwork for adopting the cat, she looked at her mesmerized son. "So what's her name, sweetie?"

He looked back to the kitten as he petted her. "Stella"
