What would we find at the edge of the Universe?

What would we find at the edge of the Universe?

Let's say that mankind has created a method to travel immense distances in reasonable times, either using warp drive or wormholes. What would happen as we travel out and try to find the edge of the universe?

As I've said before, the universe has been expanding since the Big Bang 13.75 billion years ago and this expansion has been accelerating. Cosmologists think that the observable universe is around 93 billion light years wide. The reason it's so wide is because space itself has been expanding at faster than the speed of light so distant things have moved further away than we thought.

But, the observable universe is not the real size. The universe is much larger and possibly nearly infinite in size. Cosmologists believe that the actual universe is 10^23 times larger than the observable universe. That's because of the inflation theory. The problem is that we can't see beyond the edge of the observable universe because the light hasn't gotten back to us yet. It might be that when we got to what we thought is the edge it would appear that we hadn't gotten anywhere near the edge. In other words, the universe is like a curved space and it looks the same no matter where you are inside it.

So what the heck is out there beyond this observable edge? This is where we get into crazy speculation. One idea says that there are more of the same. Then there's the inflation theory that suggests that there are other universes beyond that edge, and these are universes like ours, an infinite number of them.

This multiverse theory proposes that there are an infinite number of universe in which every possible event has occurred in our lives and all other lives. In other words, there are individuals like us in these universes that made different life choices. But, these universes could be right near us in other dimensions, dimensions that are like the ones in our universe but yet not seen.

The big question is: could we go to these other parallel universes? That's a good question. One idea says that these parallel universes are separated and if they touch a new Big Bang will occur. That would suggest that we couldn't traverse the barrier between parallel universes. Bummer!

There is some evidence that there are massive structures beyond the observable edge because galactic clusters are being pulled at unbelievable velocities toward the edge. Maybe these massive structures are parallel universes and they are responsible for the accelerating expansion of our universe. In other words these other universes are exerting gravitational forces on our universe and that's the reason that space is expanding at an accelerating rate. If that's the case then these parallel universes are also expanding and eventually they'll collide with our universe and cause multiple Big Bangs, collapsing our universe back to a singularity.

The question then is: could we survive these collisions and end up in a new universe? If this were the case it would suggest that we humans could go on forever. Admittedly, this is a science fiction idea, but it could be possible. We just don't know.

Thanks for reading.
