Are humans still evolving?

Are humans still evolving?

This subject is important in light of the previous post.

According to some scientists, we humans are evolving because our brains are shrinking not because we're getting dumber but rather because our brains are getting more efficient, and that's a good thing because a smaller brain doesn't need as much energy.

Another sign of evolution is that we are gaining resistance to diseases. This is another good thing because bacterial and virus are evolving quickly to overcome our new drugs. This idea makes sense because if we weren't evolving to become more resistant to diseases, we would die off as a species. As a matter of fact, all humans on Earth are descendants of people who survived the plague that killed off 40% of the human population. Some scientists predict that future generations will be immune to many diseases that ravage us today.

One way that we are evolving the wrong direction is that we have become too hygienic. We are obsessed by germs and use hand wipes with antibiotics and wash our hands too much. This makes me laugh because when I was in college I read a book on microbiology. What I found out was that we humans are literally a lush garden for bacteria, fungi and even viruses. They are all over our bodies both inside and outside. There are more bacteria in and on us than the number of cells in our bodies. People that are obsessed with doorknobs and toilet seats should read that book. They would realize the futility in trying to avoid germs.

Humans are losing wisdom teeth because we don't need them like our ancestors did. We have instruments to cut up food. They didn't.

We can drink milk. Once weaned off of mother's milk, our ancestors developed intolerance for milk. Modern humans have evolved to drink milk.

Probably one of the most obvious evolution sign in the human population is racial mixing. Ten thousand years ago, this was not the case and because of the lack of intermarriage they began to have more birth defects. With easy global transportation this is not the case. Interracial unions are always better because of genetic reasons. There is much less chance of passing flawed genes. The bottom line is that we are becoming more diverse, and this is a good thing.

The fact is that all species on the Earth are evolving. However, evolution is by its nature slow. It takes thousands of years to show, so don't expect to see it happen in your lifetime. There are some scientists that claim that human evolution is accelerating. They claim that 7% of our DNA is evolving rapidly. This is based on comparing our modern DNA to what it would be if no changes had occurred. This is a computer simulation, not real actual data from early man. It involves extrapolation based on the changes in human culture and population sizes versus the changes in other primates to which we are related. I don't like theories based on simulations. I think that the jury is still out on this.

Thanks for reading.
