Treason Against the King

"Time to go." Ren ordered, grabbing my hand, which I disliked, and pulling me along.

Soon we both running hard, our feet pounding on the ground, thank goodness we have shoes. The soldiers were right behind us. They were yelling for us to stop, while people screamed and jumped out of the way. Ren knocked over one of the stands and spilled fruit all over the ground. We continued running until we were almost out of the town, to be fair it was a pretty small town.

When all of a sudden another soldier jumped out from behind the wall circling the town.

I yelped in surprise, he tried to grab my wrists but I wacked him over the head. The other three arrived and I found myself in a pair of handcuffs.

The leader of the four took off my hat and my long pink hair fell down my shoulders. They looked at me suspiciously. The other three mumbled something under their breath.

"Madame, you are under arrest for treason against the king."

"What?" Ren gasped.

I blinked at him. "I'm sorry sir, you must have the wrong girl."

"You're only female in the country with that necklace, although the the hair was bit misleading. Take her away." He waved his fingers, and a small carriage pulled up. they started dragging me towards it.

"Galia!" Ren struggled, there was fear in his aqua eyes, he didn't want to be separated. To be fair I didn't really want to either.

"Wait, you can't take me and leave him!" I protested, digging my heels into the dirt.

The leader stopped for a second. "You're right, you sir are arrested for harboring a criminal."

We were both thrown into the carriage. It was bolted and locked behind us. We were trapped. The horses gave a sharp whinny and bolted, dragging us along. The carriage wasn't very stable at all, and over the first bump both of us were on the floor, I had landed on top of Ren, who blushed.

"This is an interesting turn of events." He said, pushing himself up with me still flopping around like a salmon.

I blinked at him, thinking he was talking about me landing on him, when I realized it was the fact I was actually a wanted felon.

"Oh! Yes, I'm a criminal." I answered, sitting against a the walls of the moving jailhouse.

"And you've commited treason. I don't even know who the king is." He shrugged.

"Neither do I! How can I commit treason against someone I don't even know?" I fumed, getting angry was no good for my complexion. My face get's really red when I get fired up.

He smirked at me. I glared darkly at him, hoping my burning stare would stop him from saying whatever snarky comment he was about to-

"You look adorable when you're angry."

My eye twitched. "Is that honestly the most important thing on your mind right now, we've been arrested and we'll probably be executed on the gallows-"

"Hey no sweat M'lady, once we explain that it wasn't you who committed treason, they'll let us go, easy peasy." He smiled and leaned against the wall.

"Unless it was me, and this Celeste person wants me dead. I might have been a perfectly capable vigilante before this." I stewed shrewdly, feeling bitter.

"You really don't like Celeste do you?" He asked, quieter.

I frowned. "Her name makes me feel angry, I don't know why."

"I guess we'll just have to wait and find out."

We carried on with the small talk for a while. The afternoon dragged on and the vibrating rhythm of the moving vehicle made me nod off.

I fell asleep, when I woke up I was resting on Ren's shoulder. He was still awake, and looked like he had been keeping watch this whole time. I pushed him lightly but was still slightly drowsy.

"We're in the city." He announced, ignoring my feeble attempts to injure him for letting me fall asleep on him.

I glanced around through the jail bars in the door in saw that we were indeed, in a city. Instead of a bazaar they had a full on market. The streets were mostly empty and lit by dancing torches. It was quite beautiful in it's own way. The houses were stacked on top of each other, most of the streets were thee stories high. People could live above their shops. The stores themselves were open in the front, or had glass, with thatched roofs and white plaster between beams for walls.

We were heading towards the palace, the buildings few bigger, with more space, until finally we pulled up to the palace itself.

I was forced roughly out of the cramped box and tied on a leash by my hands. My dagger was taken away from me, along with Ren's money and food.

Then we were marched into a large room, guards multiplying as we went through halls filled with ridiculous finery. The room was mostly empty, and looked like some sort of common room.

Three minutes later a young man, maybe seventeen years old came waltzing into the room. He was auburn hair that cascaded down his face and rested on his shoulders, with a slight mustache at his lips. He was no pheasant, for he was dressed head to toe in varying shades of gold accented by red. A fur trimmed cape fell down to his ankles, he was wearing a gold crown.

"Listen here sir." I started respectfully. "Can you please tell the king I did not commit any treason and would greatly appreciate-"

"I am the king, his royal majesty Felix the eighth." He interrupted. I blinked, he was a very young king.

"My love Eliza I though you would recognize me." He pleaded dryly. "After all you tried to kill me."

"My name's not Eliza." I protested.

At the same time Ren looked at me. "His love?"

"I admit you've dined yourself a clever disguise this time, but you carry around a vial of my blood, that you took from me with your own hands." Felix reached forward and pulled the vial necklace off from around my neck.

Immediately I started feeling very weak and I nearly fell. Ren was looking at me worriedly as my legs started shaking.

Felix popped off the cap and glared darkly into the mixture.

"Wait a second, you can't be Eliza, this isn't human blood. Why this belong to a-"

There was a loud ear splitting shriek and all of a sudden Felix's eyes went wide.

A large white beast flew over my head, the guards instantly dropped me, I collapsed to the floor, gasping. There was screaming, yelling. I'm not sure what was going on. The next thing I was aware of is that Ren was carrying me, and he was running.

"My necklace." I gasped, hoping he would get the signal.

I'm not sure what he said, but I felt it slide over my head again.

That's when I lost consciousness.

When I woke up again it was morning. I was laying on the ground, on some flowers in the middle of a wood. How in the bloody name of all things sacred did I get out here?

Ren was sitting next to me, he was also poking me with a stick.

I took the piece of wood from his hands and snapped it in half. Then I sat up.

"Galia! You're okay!" He said in delight, hugging me tightly. "I'm mean Lucille said you'd be okay, but I was still worried. I got your necklace back for you, you should have seen the look on Felix's face when I snatched it out of his hand-"

"Hold up, how did we get here, and who's Lucille?" I asked, glancing around the sunny clearing we were in.

"I'm Lucille." A new voice said, I glanced over to see a pure white deer starring at me intently.

She had wings. They were pure white. Her eyes were dark with wisdom. She stood to walk over to me and I noticed she had the hind legs of a very large bird, rough and scaly. She also had long tail feathers, pure white as well.

"I'm a Pertyon, the spirit of someone long forgotten. I have been watching you Galia." She said.

"I knew I felt someone watching me. Why are you following us?" I questioned, suspicious.

She cocked her head. "I sensed something off about you two. You both carry strong curses."

"We tried getting rid of them, a witch told me I should be dead." Ren explained.

"And I'm apparently a wanted criminal." I added.

She twitched her head again. "You are not a criminal Galia, they had the wrong person. As for you Ren, you died, but this world has grown to accept you again."

"I died? Then how am I here?" He asked, sounding unsure.

Lucille blinked. "Something with powerful influence over magic decided your time wasn't up. Probably the same person who cursed you."

"But that makes no sense." I gasped, why would someone bring him back to life just to take away all his memories?"

"Perhaps it would have been painful to live with them." She answered. "I know how you can lift your curses although. You have to agree to follow me."

"Anything to get my family back." Ren agreed.

I hesitated for a second. I wasn't a criminal, nobody recognized me. Did I even have memories to receive? Could I be like Lucille said, with too painful of a past to bear?

I still wanted to know. A broken identity was better than no identity at all.

"Sign me up." I announced.
