The Hostile Hospital, part two
With the last episode being one of the only truly great episodes I enjoyed in this series, (although The Vile Village wasn't a total loss either) I watched this next part with great anxiety. a word which here means rocking back and forth in a chair with eyes glued to the screen with a feelings of terror running through your whole body. However, I'll admit that I enjoyed this part as well. Not as well as the last part, but enough to let me breathe a sigh of relief. There are of course more things I'm irritated about, but that's for the list.
Shall we begin?
THINGS I LIKED ABOUT THIS EPISODE:
1) Violet's attempts to run away from danger- Since the book shifts to Klaus and Sunny's perspective, we don't know what happens to Violet between the time they waited for her and then attempted to find out what Count Olaf did with her. (Although in the book they don't know that until Olaf mentions over the intercom about a branioechtomy for a certain patient). This episode shows that, despite being stuck in a terrifying situation, Violet can still handle herself. She manages to grab a scalpel and cut herself loose and then tried to rescue Babs. Not like it worked what with Babs being hysterical, but hey, A for effort.
(Actually, that's a weird expression. Effort doesn't even start with an 'A'...).
2) The butterfly guy- I think he's called a lepidopterist actually. (I had to look it up). I remember reading about it in the book and I thought this was kind of a fun scene to watch. Not much else about it. I just liked all the butterflies.
3) Hal's despair at the Library of Records' destruction- The scenes with Hal in it make you feel so sorry for him! In fact, I know his pain! As an avid writer, I have shelves upon stacks upon folders upon loose-hanging stories and I use them all to build upon or improve past stories or create new ideas or characters for the future. Or just reread them in fondness. However, I have lost several stacks of those precious papers I once owned and all I remember feeling was devastated. All my stories, my gradual shift in writing, my raw ideas from an innocent childhood...gone. Ruined. Missing. Long destroyed by now. So seeing Hal's reaction at the library being destroyed and knowing the children had tricked him...the pain on his face is just so raw you just want to go in and hug the poor guy! And this goes on several times. He and Mr. Poe bond over lousy secretaries (which I guess means Jacqueline's in the Hinterlands now...for some reason...) and then he confronts the children afterwards and is so upset. Even the kids felt terrible, though their apologies fell on deaf ears.
4) Klaus and Sunny have a much better disguise- In the book, they tried to disguise themselves as the two pasty faced women which, when I read it then, kind of confused me. Oh yeah, great disguise you two. This one is much better and honestly, Klaus' deep voice and his knowledge on practically everything makes him a much better fake doctor than Count Olaf. Not going to lie.
5) Babs gave Olaf the idea of hiding Violet's name in an anagram- In the book, Klaus and Sunny are only able to find Violet after guessing that if she's on the list for the operating room, she's probably on the hospital list somewhere. This episode however explains the logic behind this idea. Olaf could have easily just stashed Violet in the broom closet or in some locked patient room and Klaus would never have found her. However, in the hospital, every little thing is documented for the record, so someone would have found it rather suspicious that there was a patient prepped for surgery and yet they weren't even able to be located in the hospital records. So by Babs explaining that, it gives Olaf the idea to treat Violet like a patient and put her in the farthest room in the hospital where she would be out of sight and away from suspicious eyes.
6) The man who looks like neither man nor women survives- Now, I won't lie, I felt sad when this character died in the book, but not by a lot since he was kind of more like a grunting background character. Here, even though he's practically emotionless, I still enjoy him a lot and I'm glad he got out okay. Whether or not you find that fair is up to you, but I'm glad someone survived! Also, he made a third Shining reference. Not sure if that'll get old quick, but these directors sure enjoy that movie.
7) The pasty face women- Are these two okay? Oh they're still hilarious, but they definitely seem very weird this episode. They drink vinegar?
Well okay.....
8) Olaf's hunter and prey speech- Yeah, that was actually pretty terrifying. I'm glad they're trying to make him more intimidating instead of stupidly clumsy. That's all I have to say about that.
9) It takes a hot second for Violet to succumb to the anesthesia- This'll come back into play later, I promise. But as a newborn baby, I had TGA, Transposition of the Great Artery. Basically, my heart valves which were supposed to help me breath and circulate my blood were in the wrong spot. I underwent surgery, got a stent, and was sent on my merry way. Over the course of my twenty plus year lifespan, I've had to go back constantly to the doctor in order to make sure my heart was stable, though over the years I've had to go back less and less frequently. However, the last time I went, which was when I was fifteen, it took me a good ten seconds if not more to succumb to the anesthesia whereas normally I fall asleep instantly. So seeing Violet take a hot minute to fall asleep was pretty realistic. I know this sounded like a winded explanation for something so simple, but like I said...this will come back into play later.
10) Count Olaf starting the fire- I don't know why, but I liked how Olaf started putting the fire out but then stopped and was like , "Oh yeah. Starting fires. I like those." and then carefully made a fire start in the library of records. I feel like it alludes a bit to his past and how he was once on the 'good' side of VFD, but I'm not going to go too into detail on that. My English teachers do enough of that in all three years of my in depth college courses. So I'll just leave you with that scene and how I just liked the look and feel of it.
11) The scene where the androgynous assistant asks the kids to let him in- "The assistant who looks like neither man nor woman" is a long name, so from this point onward, I'm calling him the androgynous assistant or the monotone assistant. Just for the sake of my fingers. Anyway, I just like how he asked the kids to let him in and Klaus was like "No!" and he actually said, "Please?" <laughing> Call me childish, but that was amusing!
Also, p.s, this guy is in the Jurassic World movie. Remember the gyrospheres and the guy working behind the desk telling everyone the ride was cancelled? THAT WAS HIM!!! AND IT COMPLETELY FLEW OVER MY HEAD!!!! Actually, is he like this in real life? Hold the phone...
No he's not. Okay good.
Wow....that's a lot of comments about how cute he is..... He's got quite a fan base for almost no wiki information...
THING I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THIS EPISODE:
1) Olaf sees through Klaus' disguise- I really thought this disguise was a clever one and much better than the one done in the book. So I was slightly disappointed that Count Olaf didn't fall for it. Especially since this guy is an established idiot. He doesn't even know what the concept of "Roger that!" means!!! So how is he able to lure two intelligent kids into a trap?! If he was done closer to the books, this would make more sense. But with his current character, it's kind of out of place. Maybe it's because he's so stupid that he guesses (correctly) the doctor must be fake? I don't know.
2) Klaus and Sunny don't help out the hospital guests- Now this I figured was coming up since it's in the book, and honestly, I didn't really hate this scene more than I felt terrible for the people. Of course, they don't really reason why Klaus and Sunny can't get them anything, especially since their face is pretty noticeable if you know what I'm getting at, but I still felt bad for the people who needed physical help. I've been laid up in a hospital before. It's not fun. (It was somewhat amusing when the fake VFD people admitted they needed a doctor though...).
3) Babs appearing at the end- Now, the interaction she has with Mr. Poe was funny. I liked it. But where the heck did she come from?! The last we saw of her, Count Olaf found her and Violet trying to escape. And I'm assuming he probably tied her up again if not did something worse. SO HOW DID SHE GET FREE?! Where even was she? She just ran out of the hospital panicking about paper work as if the only inconvenient thing that happened was a terrible fire. What in the world?!
4) Violet waking up from the anesthesia- I told you my little story was going to come back into play here! I'll give credit to them trying to make Klaus clever by turning off the anesthesia machine. However, from personal experience, visual experience, and a tad bit of extra research to make my case credible, THIS IS THE MOST IMPLAUSIBLE THING I HAVE EVER SEEN! (I wonder if this is how doctors feel when they watch doctor tv dramas...). Anesthesia is a highly potent drug meant to knock out it's victim for an hour at the minimum! Even if you managed to sneakily turn the machine off, our little sleeping violet wouldn't be waking up for the rest of the episode! And that scene with the anesthesia time limit made no sense either! They want to hurry up before the anesthesia wears off even though Violet's still wearing the gas mask and the anesthesia machine is still on? What the who? And then there's the little scene where Violet's waking up. I love how when Klaus yells that they're trying to cut off his sister's head and Violet sits up like, "What?!" and then there's a good five minutes spent with people shouting accusations and then she's wide awake. And yet Klaus still wheels her out on the gurney even though she's not tied down and clearly wide awake and focused enough to panic and have fully intelligent conversations with her siblings while being luxuriously wheeled away from an angry mob.
Now I've mentioned this point before and a few people have told me that it's a show. Not everything is going to be exactly like real life. And that's true. What, you think all those Home Alone traps wouldn't kill someone in real life? However, my issue comes in one tiny little form....
THE ORIGINAL BOOK GOT IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!!!!!!!
In the original book, Violet was off the anesthesia gas so they could hide her face with her hair! Klaus stalled long enough to see her start twitching and waking up! By the time the disguise was revealed, Hal came in, and the children made their escape, she was still drifting in and out of consciousness! That's what happens when you go under anesthesia! It's like waking up from a long nap where you feel completely discombobulated, confused, you stare off into space, and if you're like me, you barf right after waking up. You don't just wake up and continue on with a conversation! The reason the kids hid in the closet was because Violet was weak and dizzy and wobbly from the anesthesia and she needed Klaus to support her just to get inside the closet! Here, Violet's just carrying Sunny like she does in every. single.
EPISODE!!!!!
The reason I loved this book was because this is the first time Klaus and Sunny are without their older sister. Violet is always there to help them and come up with ideas when times are dire. But this time, the tables have turned and Klaus and Sunny need to save their sister. It's their turn to be the protective savior siblings. NOT THIS RIDICULOUS NONSENSE!!!!
And that's honestly it. I was thinking about putting the VFD people down, but I decided not to. They're not bad. They're just...very weird. This episode was pretty decent and much better than the previous ones in the season, but that doesn't mean there aren't things that didn't get ruined for me. That chase scene was so anti-climatic. Oh well. It was at least the better of all the episodes. Of course, we're not out of the woods yet. Unfortunately, there's still the matter of The Carnivorous Carnival...the two parter to wrap up this unfortunate season.
