Chapter 4

The next morning, I skip taking my kayak out on the lake to get ready for my date, or whatever it may be. I want to make myself look nice instead of the thrown together mess he's seen the last couple days. I shower and then throw on a pair of pink and white striped shorts and a fitted pink ribbed t-shirt with white sandals. I grab my hair dryer, taking my time drying my hair and applying make-up, although I want it to look natural. I'm just applying my lip-gloss when I hear the doorbell ring. I glance at the clock noticing it's exactly nine and my heart flips in my chest.

I run to answer the door, calling, "I got it Grandma!"

I pull the door open and Christian stands there staring at me with wide eyes and his mouth slightly ajar. He clears his throat and stammers, "Wow, um, hi." He smiles and compliments me, "You look great!"

"Thanks," I mumble, feeling the blush take over my face.

"Are you ready?" he prompts.

"Yeah. Grandma, I'm leaving with Christian for town. Are you sure you don't need anything?" I yell down the hall.

"I'm good dear. Have fun, Briann!"

"Okay, bye!" I grab my bag and pull the door shut behind me as I step outside.

My eyes widen at the sight of his big, white, Ford F150 pick-up truck. I'm immediately glad I'm wearing shorts, so it's easy to get in and out. He follows me around to the passenger door and opens it for me. "Thank you." I climb up and he shuts the door before he jogs around to the other side and slides in behind the wheel. He looks at me again and smiles before shaking his head, letting out a breath and then immediately starting up his truck.

"What?" I probe, nervous for his answer.

"Nothing," he murmurs, shaking his head again. "Let's just get these errands done, so I can enjoy the rest of the day with the beautiful girl in my truck." I blush and look down at my hands now fidgeting in my lap, but don't say anything in response. He turns the radio on and one of my favorite old Kenny Chesney songs blasts through the speakers, "Summertime". A huge smile covers my face as we both start singing along, "Summertime is finally here..."

We're both grinning and feeling much more relaxed by the time we arrive in town. We walk into what I call the "boating store" because I don't know the real name of it. I pick up a thick silver nozzle and ask, "Do you hook this to a water spicket or something? I don't get it." He laughs, shaking his head in amusement. He quickly grabs what he needs and pays for it before we make our way next door to the hardware store.

I decide to make a game out of picking up items and guessing what it's supposed to be used for. Christian joins in, but since he actually seems to know what he's talking about, he begins making up something completely outrageous for different things. By the time we leave the hardware store, the people working there are giving us funny looks and my stomach hurts from laughing so hard. "I never knew a hardware store could be so much fun!" I gasp between giggles.

"That's because you've never been to one with me," he claims. He smiles proudly, puffing out his chest causing me to laugh even harder. As he catches his breath, he looks at me and questions, "Is there anywhere you want to go?" I look up and down the street without a response, so he prods, "Or if you just want to walk through town and window shop, we could do that."

I nod my head in agreement, "Yeah, that sounds good." He reaches for my hand, lacing his fingers through mine. I smile wide feeling the warm tingles travel up through my fingers as we take our time walking down the street, enjoying each other's company.

We approach the opposite end of town too soon for my liking. "Are you hungry?" I inquire.

"Sure," he replies.

I point to the coffee shop behind him and inform him, "They have really good sandwiches here. We could order food and eat out here on one of the benches," I suggest.

"Sounds perfect," he agrees.

Watching people make their way around town as we finish up our lunch, Christian points to an older woman walking by wearing blue jeans, a red and gray flannel shirt and a red bandana on the top of her head, with gray curls sticking out from underneath it. "What do you think her life story is?" he ponders.

"Hmm," I ponder, grinning. His question instigates another game between us. For the next hour we entertain ourselves by making up unusual stories about the strangers walking by.

Christian looks at me his eyes sparkling, while I'm laughing so hard, tears fill my eyes. He smiles and quietly murmurs, "I could listen to you laugh all day. You have a beautiful laugh; it lights up your whole face."

His words calm my laughter but speed up my heart. I can't help but be mesmerized by him. I change the subject quickly, not quite knowing how to respond. "So, what's next on your list of your summer of fun?" I ask playfully.

"It's our summer of fun," he emphasizes. "Remember?" He pauses, looking at me and then suggests, "I'd like to go hiking in the parks and exploring some of the small towns around here. It's summer, I'm sure we can find a few local festivals to check out."

"That sounds like a lot of fun," I easily concede.

"I also really want to get you to try out more water sports if you're up for it. I can't believe you've never water-skied, and you've spent how many summers on this lake?" he prods, not expecting an answer. "We have to go skiing! Maybe my brothers or sister will be around to go with us sometime over the summer. Then, you'll have to come back this winter so we can try out all the winter things."

I look at him, not really sure how to take all of his plans, but it makes my stomach do another flip with the thought of spending so much time with him and seeing him even after summer ends. Although, I can't help but ask, "What's with all your plans anyway?"

He takes a deep breath and looks at me like he's pondering something. Then, he opens his mouth to speak, but shrugs his shoulders and smiles as if changing his mind. "I just thought it would be fun to show you the ropes, or try some things together you've never done before, but we don't have to."

"No! That's not what I meant!" I immediately insist, shaking my head. "I just, I...I don't know," I stammer. "I guess it's because I've only known you a few days." I smile shyly at him and admit, "I'm having a lot of fun with you. I really like doing things with you."

He smiles wide, making his eyes sparkle. "Good. I'm having fun with you too, so as long as we're both having fun, let's keep making plans to do these things together."

"Okay," I answer. He reaches his hand out to pull me up and continues to hold on tight as we stroll down the street past all the doors of the local shops.

As we approach the bridge, he tugs on my hand, detouring us to the side of the bridge towards the water. We sit down on some oversized rocks near the water giving us a little bit of privacy from the town. Watching the water flow quickly over the stones and onto the other side of the bridge that eventually leads out to the ocean is truly captivating. "It's so pretty," I murmur in awe.

He nods in agreement and looks at me quietly. Finally, he murmurs, "Thanks for coming with me today." I nod my head in acknowledgment. He reaches towards me, pushing a loose strand of my hair behind my ear barely mumbling, "So soft..." as he lets it fall between his fingers.

I hold my breath, hoping he's going to kiss me. Glancing at his lips, I wait, wondering if I should make a move and kiss him, but suddenly I don't have to wonder anymore. His hand holding my hair drifts to my cheek, and he leans towards me. Closing the short distance between us, I feel his warm, soft lips on mine. His kiss feels gentle at first. I kiss him back with my heart beating in my throat, barely breathing as he deepens the kiss. My hands slide up to his shoulders and curl around his neck.

Suddenly, I feel his tongue lick at my lips asking for entry into my mouth. I open for him, and our tongues collide in the most incredible kiss I've ever experienced in my life. He tastes sweet and salty with a little mint, heavenly. I finally pull back to catch my breath and we both sit there with our hands behind each other's necks and our foreheads pressed together, breathing heavily.

"Wow," I whisper.

"You can say that again," he mumbles with a soft chuckle. His phone rings and he pulls away with a reluctant sigh, while I let my hands drop to my sides. "Hi, Dad," he states. Pausing as his dad speaks, he replies, "Okay, I'm on my way, then...I'll be there in a half hour, I have to drop Bree off at home," he reveals. "Okay, bye."

"I guess it's time to go then," I state as he disconnects the call, wishing the day didn't have to end.

"Yeah, my dad needs this stuff," he grumbles. He grabs my hand and pulls me into a hug wrapping his arms around my shoulders while I slide mine around his waist. I turn my head and lay it on the left side of his chest, feeling his heartbeat against my cheek. He tries to put his head on mine, but I'm too tall with the top of my head coming to his nose making me laugh. "Hey now," he jokes as he steps back. I just smile as he holds my hand while we take our time walking back to his truck. My smile doesn't leave my face even after he drops me off at my grandma's house with a quick kiss, knowing he's already late.
