Chapter Twenty Two
All six of them; James, Sirius, Remus, Peter, Amy and the Doctor, made their way closer and closer to the huge, ancient stone castle, past clusters of astonished young witches and wizards. Hogwarts was a very diverse school, that was certain. They reached the huge, cobblestone courtyard, surrounded by towering stone archways and groups of small first years clustered around the openings, and James paused for a moment, ceasing the movement of the entire group in the middle of the courtyard.
"Shit," he sighed, rubbing his face with his hands gravely as he realised something. "Fuck, fuck, fuck ..."
"Mind your profanity ..." Peter exclaimed in a high, stupid voice with a huge smirk. It disappeared when he realised no one was laughing.
"What's wrong?" Remus asked him, standing at James' side with concern.
"We can't get up to the Astronomy Tower on our own, Filch'll stop us. Unless we're accompanied by a teacher, which we haven't got," he groaned.
"Is this because of what happened last time? Because it wasn't my fault!" said Sirius rather quickly.
"You're the one that bloody jumped off it, fool." James accused.
"Moony dared me to."
"I most certainly did not!" Remus interjected. "I said, 'Sirius, don't jump off the Astronomy Tower' and you said, 'don't tell me how to live life, Moony' and YOU BLOODY JUMPED!" He almost shrieked, glaring at Sirius.
"Potato potahto," Sirius quoted, shrugging like he didn't care. "Same thing."
The Doctor shook his head, sighing. The corners of Amy's pink lips were upturned slightly, as though she was amused at the boys witty humour. People were not wrong when they said perfect people only exist in fiction ... However, the Doctor was the only exception.
"We need help, then?" Amy suggestively asked, making three boys groan and one boy sing.
"Help! I need somebody!"
"Sirius -"
"Help! Not just anybody!"
"Stop it -"
"Help! You know I need someone!"
"Si -"
"Heeeellllllpppp!"
Remus smacked him over the back of the head harshly, his rough palm colliding with Sirius' skull quite hard with a loud thump. "Now is not the time for your pointless Beatles obsession, Padfoot. Shut it."
Sirius rubbed the back of his aching, abused head with his hand, groaning quietly to himself. His dark curls of hair were messed and tousled, slightly longer than James', but messy like his, none the less. He looked down shamefully at his scuffed black shoes, experimenting with different steps and movements out of sheer complete boredom. Remus looked over to Sirius with slight regret.
"I'm sorry, Sirius. I shouldn't have been rude -"
Sirius shook his head dismissively. "Don't worry. I understand. I am a bit of a prick sometimes -"
"Guys!" James exclaimed. "We need a teacher and we need one now ..."
"How can we get one? We're not exactly psychic -"
"Psychic!" Amy realised, turning to the Doctor. "Doctor, your psychic paper!"
A look of realisation dawned on the Doctor, and she saw him fishing through the pocket of his jacket, looking for an item. "Oh, Amelia Pond! You are brilliant!" He grabbed her face and kissed her cheek gently, causing her cheeks to turn slightly crimson.
He pulled out the wad of leather and fanned it out, revealing his psychic paper. "There. Professor Smith. Partial replacement for Professor McGonagall whilst she's in Hogsmeade," He grinned smugly at all of them, showing it for them all to see. "Filch is a squib, so it's not like he'll be able to prove that this is genuine with magic."
"What exactly is that thing?" Prongs asked, completely puzzled as he studied it carefully.
"Our way to the Astronomy Tower - come on!"
---
"Sev?" Lily called out, her voice echoing back to her. It was dim and cold at the top of the astronomy, the stretching, dying light of the sun being the only source of sight. She walked around, her pale hands dragging across the cool stone walls delicately as she sought out Snape. "Severus?"
There was no reply; but someone, somewhere, was present, as she heard a whipping sound, as if someone were withdrawing their wand from their cloak. There was a sudden gust of gentle breeze, presumably from the whipping of cloaks, before she saw a luminous, soft light emerging from the tip of a wand. The soft glow brought the person's features to her eyesight: a pale, pointed face ... cold, grey eyes ... silvery blonde hair ...
"Lucius ..." She gasped quietly. "I -"
"Looking for your precious prince, hmmm?" His sharp accent emphasised the letter p, subsequently causing beads of spit to spurt from his mouth when he spoke. Despite this, his voice was unusually calm and quiet, as it always was, barely a whisper. "I'm afraid he's not the only person up here ..."
As he said those words, more people emerged from the shadows, the tips of their wands illuminated. She recognised their faces almost immediately: Narcissa and Bellatrix Black, Mulciber, Avery and -
"Severus?" Lily murmured with disbelief. "You - you're -"
"Stand aside, muggleborn. We have no intentions in hurting you," Narcissa commanded and held her wand out more defensively as Lily shrank away into a corner near the open balcony of the tower.
Bellatrix sighed loudly at her sister, dropping her wand arm slightly. "Oh, come on, Cissy! Just one little charm? After all, she's only a mudbl-"
Severus, for a split second, winced at the forming word, before his deep booming voice shouted, "do not say that word, Bella. No one is to lay a finger on her, understood?"
"But -"
"Enough!" He yelled, Bellatrix silently whimpering. "It's Potter that we're after," Snape spat, as if the name of his enemy were repulsive and poison for him to utter.
"I don't understand, Sev? What's Potter got to do with you holding me up here?"
"We all know that he'll stick his nose into things. And we're - I, mostly am - sure as hell that within a split second he'll be rushing up here ... Plenty of enough time to teach the mongrel and his rats a lesson ..."
"A lesson?" Lily laughed mockingly, courage bubbling. "And what'll that be? You can't cast a curse on him for pulling down your trousers -"
"You don't understand anything, Lily!" He snapped, briskly closing the distance between them and pointing the tip of his wand directly in the centre of her neck. Her eyes widened as she felt it delicately press into her neck; a warning, she assumed. A very compromising position, indeed. "You have no idea the torment he's ensured on my life - the pointless teasing, the charms -"
"I understand that you're the biggest drama queen of the century," she boldly stated, although her gaze remained terrified on his wand. Any minute now, he could skewer her throat and turn her into a kebab.
An eruption of gentle 'ooooohs' erupted from the sinister young group, and Snape silenced them with a sharp pivot of his head and a cautious glare, before snapping his gaze back to Lily.
"I'd watch my tongue if I were you, Lily. You aren't exactly in the best of positions."
"And I'd wash my pants if I were you."
A sharp jerk of Snape's arm caused his wand to press harder into her throat, causing her to stumble backwards ...
... right near the archway of the balcony.
"Help!" She screeched, her heels tipping backwards as she fell backwards, her cloak flailing ...
This was it.
She was going to die.
"Not so fast, Evans -"
She recognised that cocky, arrogant, charming voice anywhere. A huge pair of strong arms enveloped around her waist, a firm grip on her lanky figure, and pulled her back upwards before her feet had fully tipped back. Although her frightfully ginger hair obscured the vision of her bright green eyes, she knew perfectly well who that distinctive, messy mop of dark hair and glasses belonged to.
"Potter!" Severus yelled, holding out his wand again. "Say your last words!" His wand was pointed at James' unarmed chest.
James contained his smug smirk, glancing behind Snape for a moment. "Okay ... Look behind you."
With confusion, Snape began to turn, but instead, was met with a forceful punch to the face. As his unconscious form fell to the floor, Sirius clutched his fist, wincing noticeably with immense pain.
"Holy fucking Lennon and Merlins balls on the Queen of England!" He screeched dramatically, his face contorting into a look of burning agony. "Is his face made of bloody concrete?!"
Lily glanced around carefully, looking around. Mulciber, Avery and Narcissa had been stunned and were lying on the ground, Lucius had been forcefully punched, like Snape, by Remus, and Amy had a firm grip on Bellatrix, who flopped and flailed like a trapped wild animal struggling for freedom.
"Get your disgusting paws off me, you filthy muggle!" She spat viciously, her wild hair splayed savagely all over her gaunt, hollow features. "Let me go!"
---
"Fantastic!" The Doctor beamed at James, smiling warmly. Everyone; Himself, Amy, Remus, James, Sirius, Peter, Lily and Marlene, were standing where they were stood before, near the huge lake. James was protectively standing close to Lily, who was standing just as close to him. Sirius was leaning back against one of the trees, indulging in its shade against the warm sun, and Remus was sat on the ground with his legs crossed, as was Peter. The Doctor was stood next to Amy, his arms crossed with a soft smirk on his face as she displayed her dainty hands on her marvellous hips. The sun was beginning to go down, creating a gorgeously orange glow to everything. A soft breeze shuttled through the air, and there were very few other people around them. The perfect setting.
"Thank you so much," Lily smiled at Amy, pulling her aside to speak privately and nodding to Marlene to stay put with the boys. "It sounds like such an understatement to say, but thank you. If you and your friend hadn't have helped James ... I would've been getting scraped off the floor."
"Oh, please -" Amy shook her head, laughing. "The Doctor helped more. Besides, it was James that was so eager to get to you on time. If he hadn't rushed us to save you, we wouldn't have been able to do anything. He really cares for you, Lily. And not to mention practically adores you. It's true love," she smirked.
Lily smiled, blushing and looking down. "True love? Maybe in a different universe ... I mean, he's lovely, but he's ever so cocky."
"People change ..." She suggested. "And I bet my life, James would be a better person for you. Without you, can you imagine? I bet he only acts that way to impress you. He does care deep down for you, Lily. You're ... meant to be, I guess."
Lily nodded as if she understood, glancing back at James, who was having a discussion with the Doctor and the other Marauders, and she bit her pink lip. "I suppose you're right ... But I could say exactly the same for you and your Doctor friend."
Amy eyes widened, and she shook her head nervously. "Oh, no, no, no. Me and the Doctor are strictly friends. I'm married to someone else - well, when I say married ... I - Let's just say that in a few short whiles my marriage partner will no longer be my marriage partner, and the Doctor will be my friend. Nothing more ..." She tried to hide the sadness in her voice, but Lily, despite her young age, had already hinted it out.
"Amy ..." She ceased their movements, taking both her hands. "Something in your heart is obviously conflicting with you. I understand that you love your marriage partner, despite whatever has happened, but you love the Doctor. I can see it in your eyes, the way you look at each other when the other isn't looking, I see it in your smile ... The point I'm trying to make here, is that you should choose. It's hard, I know, but you need to choose. Once you do, all this conflict will be over, and you'll be happy."
Amy felt rather foolish, seeking advice in a teenage girl, but she couldn't help herself. "And how do I choose, Lily? Any suggestions for that?"
"Choose the one you fell for second."
"What? Why?"
"Because ..." She mumbled, walking on. "If you truly loved the one you first loved, you wouldn't never fell in love with the second."
Amy stood still, taking in the words Lily had just spoken wisely, before tailing after her.
---
"So, you and Lily ..." The Doctor began, raising a non-existent, questioning eyebrow. "What'll happen between you next?"
Sirius smirked smugly, a suggestive look on his youthful, handsome face, and James elbowed him in the ribs gently, not enough to hurt him, but enough to suggest that he didn't appreciate Sirius' insinuation. "Just friends, I think, so far. But I want to be more. So much more, to be honest, mate. It sounds ridiculous, I know. I could have any girl I want, and I'm here chasing after Evans. She's worth it, though. So worth it." He spoke so passionately about Lily.
"Maybe you should strive for that, then," the Doctor suggested. "Wisen up a bit, lad. And then she'll see."
"You really think?"
The Timelord nodded, smiling wistfully, before his gaze fell to Peter. "And maybe you should be careful who you trust. Sometimes the ones you love most can betray you."
With a confused expression, James nodded. He pushed his square-framed glasses up the bridge of his tall nose and ruffled his messy, dark curls. When the Doctor was about to walk away to find his female companion, James placed a hand on his shoulder, stopping him. "Doctor ... About Amy ..."
"What about her?" Oblivious Timelord.
James chuckled softly, rolling her eyes. "She's a firecracker, mate. And you obviously need her just as much as she needs you. I promise you to do everything I can for Lily, in exchange for you doing everything for Amy. Yeah?"
"Amy is married, James."
"So?" He smirked cheekily. "What's a little competition compared to ... you? One look at those stolen glances that you give each other and it's plain as day. Even Sirius noticed. And he's an idiot."
"Just because you're not facing me, James, doesn't mean I can't hear you," Sirius reminded with playful annoyance.
The Doctor sighed, his answer still stuck in his throat. It was true; he adored Amy, the very bones of his Scottish beauty. He would be willing to do anything for her, especially since the incident had occured with Rory. His Amelia, he realised, was his, and no stupid human boy would change that. Rory didn't deserve someone as fantastic as Amy, as brilliant as his firey young Pond. But neither did he.
Amy returned a few short moments with Lily, exchanging looks with the Doctor. Whatever views James held, Lily clearly did, and she had told Amy. They both avoided eye contact after that, hugging each student tightly before saying their goodbyes.
"Good luck to all of you," Amy smiled, winking at Lily. Lily smirked, her gaze falling to James and back, and Amy did the same with the oblivious Doctor. "Stay out of trouble."
"Yeah ..." The Doctor agreed. "And also, by the way, Sirius, I wanted to know something ..."
"And what would that be?" He smiled smugly as Amy and the Doctor began to stride slowly back to the TARDIS.
"Do you like playing fetch always, or is it just a thing for when you're a dog?"
Sirius' face dropped.
