Chapter Nine

The soft rays of sunlight emerging from the gap in her curtains came into view as Amy awoke. She turned to her side, and as usual, the sheets were cold due to Rory's absence. A sigh escaped from the redheads mouth, her arms stretched out above her head as she yawned. Yet again, she was alone.

But you aren't alone, are you Amy? The growing life inside you doesn't agree.

Her hand gently fell to her stomach, she stroked it softly, motherly. This was Rory's baby; her baby. No amount of loneliness or absence would change that.

Something had changed, however. The flame Rory had once ignited in her heart was dying, merely a tiny flicker. Whenever he touched her, kissed her, which was very rare, she didn't feel the butterflies she had once felt when they were teenagers. In fact, she felt barely anything.

Ever since the Doctor had returned, her relationship with Rory began deteriorating. It was as if she was falling out of love with him.

Had she even been in love with him in the first place?

Of course she wanted to marry him. Let's face it, Rory was a desirable husband. He was smart. He was kind. He was loving. He had great potential, ambitions that he would more than likely fulfill. More importantly, he adored Amy, practically worshiped the ground she tread on. But perhaps she had rushed it. Perhaps she didn't consider her true feelings. Did she really marry him for love? Or was it just to fill the gap that had been left by the Doctor?

The Doctor.

Her heart filled with sadness as she thought of him. She had turned him away. Her best friend. The only person that had truly amazed her, surprised her, challenged her.

A small tear brimmed in the corner of her glassy eyes. As it spilled down her face, she wiped it away quickly, viciously almost.

He lied to you, Amy. He lied about Rory. Or did he?

What if he had been telling the truth? What if that smell that had coated Rory was another girl? It broke her heart that she believed such accusations. Because whether she believed the story or not, it would always result in her losing trust and faith in either of them.

She sat up, removing herself from the sheets and sighing as a wave of nausea swept over her yet again.

Pregnancy had its faults. But it was worth it, for the result would be her happiness. A beautiful, perfect baby that would solve all the problems with her husband.

Could you really live a happy life without the Doctor, Amy? Don't lie to yourself. You need him. You need him more than you need food. More than you need water. More than you need air.

Before she could contemplate her thoughts, she rushed to the bathroom, and the contents of her stomach exploded out of her mouth into the toilet below her. She couldn't suppress the groan that fell from her lips.

At that moment, hunched over in pain, it wasn't Rory she wanted.

It was him.

It had always been him.

-----------------------------------------------------------

"Hello?"

"Hi, Nina, it's Amy. Do you know where Rory is? He was due home an hour ago, I was hoping you know where he is. When I woke up this morning he wasn't here, and it's been hours. I'm getting worried."

She hesitated for a second. "I-- haven't seen him, sorry. Have you tried reception? He's probably still working - You know him, always giving his best."

"I know. I've rung him twice. Never mind, I'll try later. Thanks, Ni."

"No worries, Amy. By the way, Rory told me about the baby, congrats . . ." Nina paused. ". . . I'm very happy for the both of you."

Although she did not see it, Nina sensed a smile forming on Amy's lips. "Thanks. Also, a little birdie may or may not have told me that you and Seb are engaged. Is it true?"

Nina laughed uneasily. "Yeah. . . Just last week. Still feels like a dream, you know. He couldn't believe it when I said yes."

"Aww, I felt the same when Rory popped the question. Good luck to you both. You'll be an amazing couple."

Her heart filled with guilt. "Hopefully as amazing as you and Rory."

"As if. I best get going, Ni, I'll see you soon."

"Bye, Amy. Take care."

The call ended and Nina placed the phone down. A deep sigh left her as she looked at a half-naked Rory laying on her bed, regret in her eyes.

She shook her head at him sadly. "We can't do this, Rory. Not anymore."

"Nina," he began, "please just listen to me. . ."

"You promised, Rory! You said you'd leave her. . ." Tears began to brim in her eyes, she pressed a fist to her mouth to remain calm as she observed the man.

"I will leave her, just give me time, sweet heart. One day, we'll be together. You and me against the world." His body shifted so was now standing, but Nina turned her back, facing the window. "Ni. . . please . . ."

The dark orbs of her eyes gazed upon the darkness of outside, streetlamps illuminating little parts and corners like yellow dots on a deep, dark canvas. "I won't let you leave a pregnant woman, Rory. You must take responsibility for your actions -"

His arms enveloped her from behind in a warm embrace, wrapping around her waist. He pressed his nose into the back of her neck, pressing soft, gentle kisses on her shoulder blades. "I didn't mean for it to happen. . . Come back to bed. . ."

"Rory," she warned, "You can't do this anymore. Seb - he proposed. I told him to wait, to ask me again. . . I'm waiting for you, Rory. I won't spend the rest of my life waiting. I've just had to lie about the engagement to Amy, I've lied about your whereabouts to one of my friends. If you loved me you wouldn't do this. I love you, so much - but you can't abandon your family. . ."

"I can't abandon this family either, Nina. You . . . the baby. . ." The hands around her waist moved lower to her stomach, and Nina's heart fluttered. "It's you who I love. Not her. So come back to bed. . . I'll tell Amy that I slept on Eric's sofa because I couldn't get home, I'm spending the night with you tonight."

She laughed quietly, closing her eyes and smiling. "I hate you, you know."

"No, you don't."

(In case you were wondering - Yes, Nina is also pregnant with Rory's baby *shivers uneasily* What a rat, am I right?

PS - Nina is portrayed by Britne Oldford, because she is so beautiful and I just -- *dies* No but siriusly (my phone auto corrects that word - don't judge) try not to hate Rory too much - he really, really does love Nina. A lot. Like, a lot.

PPS - I really can't thank you all enough for reading this awfully written story. You're all too kind to me.)
