Chapter Five
He gently knocked on the door. His stomach was churning inside him, like it was begging for a way out of his body.
"Coming!" He heard a muffled voice say. Shortly afterwards Amy opened the door wearing a silky dressing gown. "Oh, sorry about this. I thought you were Rory." She mumbled bashfully. "Come in, anyway, I'll put the kettle on." She invited him inside and put some water in the kettle before rushing upstairs to change. She came down wearing a pair of pyjama bottoms and a tank top, walking into the kitchen to get the Doctor a cup of tea. He took it gratefully, although he felt like if he tried to put anything in his stomach it would irrevocably deny it.
"So...expecting a fun night with Rory?" The Doctor asked, taking a small sip of the hot beverage Amy had handed him.
"Yeah...it's our anniversary today." She smiled, which made the Doctor choke on his tea. "Are you alright?"
"I'm— fine—" He spluttered, placing his hand over his mouth and setting his tea down. "Tea must've gone down the wrong way." He could feel the guilt eating his mind, rotting his heart and consuming his soul. He had to tell her.
Amy laughed slightly. "We've been trying for a baby recently." She sipped her tea. "He's a wonderful husband. He's quite good-looking, charming, loyal-"
"Amy I need to tell you something, something important." The Doctor shot up from his seat and walked over to Amy, sitting next to her on her sofa and taking her hands in his. "Rory is not to be trusted, Amy-"
"What're you on about, you Dumbo." She giggled, pulling her hands away. "Rory's amazi-"
"Rory was cheating on you, Amy. It all started when he was acting suspiciously, so I paid him a visit in the hospital. He was snogging another girl in the cupboard, quite viciously too. I'm sorry, Amy..." He expected her to burst into tears, or to pick up her phone and call it off with Rory. Instead...
"You lying bastard." She spat. "What kind of sick, twisted old man would lie about one of his best friends like that to make them split up?!" She jumped up from her seat on the couch and hit him on the shoulder. Hard. "Who the hell do you think you are, doing this?! Get out of my house-"
The Doctor looked puzzled. "Amy..."
"GET OUT!" She angrily yelled, grabbing him by his jacket and dragging him over to the door. She opened the door and threw him to the wet pavement below. "Don't you dare come back here, Doctor. Don't you dare!" She slammed the door before he could protest.
The Doctor lay on the pavement, clutching his throbbing shoulder. What hurt even more, though, was his broken heart. As if it were bad enough that Amy believed Rory, she didn't believe him...
And that left him broken.
