18- Confronting Melissa

Antonio was sitting at the table looking at a couple envelopes that were for Isabella, and Gabriella, and heard the door fly open. He turned his head, and watched the girls run up the stairs, with bags in their hands.

"Girls, come here a minute." Antonio called out. Sadie started walking inside, and over to Antonio, then sat at the table giving him a serious look.

"We have to talk after you hand those letters to them."

"Now what?" he asked, sighing.

The girls walked down the stairs, and slowly over to Antonio, scared he was going to tell them they couldn't go to the dance.

"Sit down." he smiled. He looked down at the envelopes in his hands, and handed them the letters from Harlow "These are from your mother, you can read them here, or in your room, wherever you would like."

The girls smiled, and looked at what he handed them, the girls looked at each other, then over at Sadie. "If you don't mind, I'd like to read mine alone." Isabella said quietly.

"That's fine, they're for you, and you can do whatever you would like with them. I'm sure she had something very special to say to you." Antonio says, smiling. Even though he was curious as to what she said, but knew it was meant privately for them.

The girls stood up, and headed upstairs to read their letters. Sadie then walked upstairs to make sure the other kids were in bed, hoping they were asleep, and not fooling around, before she had her talk with Antonio.

While Sadie was checking on the kids, Antonio walked into his office to look over the paperwork that Ethan finished for him, saw numbers that were music to his ears, and grinned.

Sadie walked in, and sat down on his lap, looking at the papers on his desk. She didn't understand what all the numbers meant, but what she saw she assumed was a huge profit if he sold one of his properties.

"So, what I have to tell you, I'm not sure what to think, but it's something that needs to get looked into." She proceeded to say. His hands wrapped around her stomach, and turned her a bit so he could look at her.

"What would that be?"

"It has to do with Ethan... we ran into Melissa at the mall, and she had a little girl with her. Her name is Faith, and the little girl told me that she was four years old. After it hit me, I did the math... what if that is Ethan's little girl?"

Antonio pushed himself back, and widened his eyes, as he looked at Sadie "Seriously?"

"I'm dead serious, I asked the girls who she looked like without giving them any clues, and they both said Ethan. I also thought the same thing. Melissa was acting nervous around us, and kept looking around like she didn't want to be around us. When Faith mentioned how old she was, I watched Melissa squeeze her hand tighter."

"I believe Melissa told Ethan that she had been married for three years, so it could be a possibility. But I also remember Ethan claiming she had been cheating on him." She paused, and thought about what the little girl looked like, and scratched her head "She looked exactly like Ethan, and I mean, exactly like him." Sadie stood up quickly and turned to Antonio "He needs to know."

******

A couple days later, Antonio was looking at his laptop screen thinking about what Sadie told him. He had been doing some digging into Melissa, he called the courts, and paid to have the information faxed over to him about the birth of Faith, he called his secretary into the room, and had her do some more digging on her, to help speed things up.

He made a phone call to Ethan, and asked to meet him for lunch, hoping to have more information before he left go meet him. Throughout the morning Antonio made as many calls as he could, and called the hospital the little girl was born at. He was told due to confidential information, the paperwork that was signed at the time, they were unable to give him any information about her.

Feeling drained from being on the phone all morning, and bummed that he hadn't received any more information about Melissa, and Faith, he grabbed his jacket and started heading out the door until he heard his fax machine going.

He shut the door, and walked over to the fax machine, waiting for the fax to complete. He pulled the sheets out when they were finished, and sat down in his chair, looking over the paperwork. The little girl was born five months after she and Ethan were supposed to be married. Shit.

Antonio walked into the restaurant with a file in hand, and sat across Ethan, setting the file down in front of him "Sorry I'm late, I had some paperwork that I was waiting for to be faxed, and it came just as I was leaving." he says while looking at the menu.

"So, what's with the lunch today? Usually when you want lunch, it's about something that isn't good."

The waitress interrupted them to take their orders, filled up their coffee, and left. Antonio looked down at the file, picked it up and stared at it, debating on how to present it to him.

Ethan looked at him with a questionable look, and tilted his head "Something is up, you have that look in your eye, and you're kind of scaring me." Ethan sat up straighter, and took a sip of his coffee, wondering what the hell Antonio has on his mind, and why he's holding a file in his hand.

Without saying a word, Antonio handed Ethan the file. Ethan, with a confused look, took it from his hands, and opened the file. He pulled the papers out, and looked them over, confused "What is this?" he asked, as his heart sank when he saw Melissa's name "Where did you get this?"

"Sadie ran into Melissa the other night at the mall, and had a little girl with her. Sadie talked to her and the little girl, and the little girl mentioned to Sadie that she was four years old. I did some digging, and it looks like she could very well be yours."

Ethan leaned back in his chair, covering his face with his hands. He couldn't believe what he was hearing, or seeing. "According to Sadie, she looks identical to you. She has long dirty blonde hair, and green eyes... I know you can request a DNA test, but Sadie insists that she is yours, and that there's no question or doubts about it."

Their food was placed in front of them, and Ethan suddenly felt that he was no longer hungry, almost feeling sick to his stomach "If that little girl is mine, and she kept her from me, I swear...."

"I'm sorry Ethan..."

Ethan sighed "Before we were about to get married, I made a comment to her, telling her that if she continued to eat like she was, that she wouldn't be able to fit into her wedding dress. I noticed she was gaining a little weight, and was growing a pouch. She was eating a lot of sweets, and I didn't think anything of it, I just assumed she was getting nervous about the wedding. I didn't mean anything by what I said, and was only teasing her... you know how I am."

"I guess, now you know why." Antonio felt bad, he knew how much Ethan loved kids, and how he wanted to start a family with her. But then wondered why she would do such a thing, especially to him. Melissa knew how he was with kids, especially seeing him with Antonio's kids "I do have her new address, so if you would like to go over there, I'd be happy to come with you."

"You're damn right I want to go over there." Ethan said feeling pissed, and hurt at the same time.

"I took the rest of the day off, you might as well too. Now eat, lunch is on me."

Ethan picked at his food, thinking about how he possibly had a daughter out there, hating the fact that he knew nothing about it, the more he thought about it, the more upset he got. After lunch, they headed over to Melissa's house. When Antonio pulled up, they sat in the car for a minute "Now don't say anything stupid that you're going to regret, she could use that against you in court."

"Yes, I know. I'll try not to, but it may be a little difficult for me." Ethan sighed, while holding onto the door handle.

They finally got out of the car, walked up to the house, and knocked on the door. Ethan's heart dropped when the little girl answered the door, and leaned down "Is your mom home?" Ethan asked, choking up as he looked at her.

Faith ran off, looking for her mom. Melissa came out from around the corner, and stopped when she saw Antonio, and Ethan standing at the door. "What are you two doing here, and how did you find me?" she asked, snapping at them as she walked towards them.

"Awww... are you having a bad day? Because I sure the hell am." Ethan snapped back. His heart was pounding, and wanted to question her badly about Faith "I came here wondering what you ever did with the engagement ring I gave you." Antonio quickly looked over at Ethan, wondering where that came from.

"You came here for that?" she asked, sounding relieved "I still have it, hang on I'll go grab it."

"What are you doing?" Antonio whispered.

"Just wait, I remembered that she never gave it back to me, I want that back before I question her about Faith." he whispered back, looking at the little girl that was curiously looking at them.

Melissa came back with the ring, and handed it to him "I wish you would leave now." she said angrily, while placing the ring in Ethan's hand. Ethan took the ring, looked it over, and wondered how he should ask her about Faith. "We will leave, but after you tell me about her." Ethan says pointing to the little girl.

"Her name is Faith; now will you please leave."

"Is she mine?"

Melissa laughed, and picked Faith up "No, she's my husband's." she says, acting like he was crazy for him to even think that.

Ethan didn't believe her, and placed his hands on his hips "She's mine, isn't she?" Ethan insisted, as he stared at Melissa.

"No, now go. My husband should be here any minute."

Ethan looked at the file, and opened it up "According to the paperwork I have here in my hands, she was born five months after we were to be married, so don't give me this bullshit that she isn't mine." he tried handing her the file, and she refused to look at it "It's all right here, I deserve to know... now tell me, is she mine?"

Melissa set Faith down, telling her to go play in her room, while she talked to the men. "Melissa, I suggest that you be honest with Ethan, he could take this to court, and it could get ugly... you don't want that to happen do you?" Antonio asked, piping in his two cents.

"Take me to court, I'll fight it. She is not yours, and I will fight to prove it." She walked up to Ethan, and began showing him towards the door "Please leave, or I'll call the cops."

Ethan resisted her shoving him to the door, and stopped to look at her "She looks exactly like me, and you're going to deny me that?" He took her hands, and held them up to her chest "How could you?"

Antonio stepped in, and pulled Ethan's hands off her "Ethan we can take this to court, let's just leave." Ethan's eyes wouldn't leave hers, and his heart was breaking even more, now that he knew she was lying to him. He decided to quit resisting Antonio's grip, and stepped back.

Faith came around the corner, and walked over to Ethan, she drew a picture and handed it to him "I'm a good drawer, aren't I?" she asked, smiling proudly while looking at him. Ethan took the picture, and looked at it "Funny... she has the skills like her DAD." Ethan says, raising his voice.

The front door opened, and Melissa's husband walked in "Daddy." Faith excitedly said, running up to the man. Hearing her call him that, pulled at the strings in Ethan's heart. Ethan looked over at Antonio, and had the look on his face to where he wanted to punch the guy. Melissa then introduced them to her husband. The guy knew who Ethan, and Antonio were, remembering seeing them at the Halloween party.

"Self-control, it's the only way to survive in a world full of idiots." Antonio said into Ethan's ear. Trying to get him to not say anything bad to Melissa's husband.

"What can I help you with?" he asked, while looking at Ethan.

"Like I was telling your cheating princess over here, I'm here to claim my daughter, that little girl right there, the one that had been taken, and hidden from me, for the last four years."

"Excuse me?" he questioned, looking at Melissa.

"Oh, she never told you? Or are you just street smart, as in Sesame street smart." Ethan retorted. Holding the file in front of his face "The way this paperwork reads; she is my daughter. I have to say; she did admit to me that she was cheating on me, with who I assume was you, but you look at that little girl, and tell me that she doesn't look like me."

Melissa's husband James, looked at Melissa, and set Faith down. He now figured out who Ethan was, and wanted to make things right. Antonio stepped in, and tried talking some sense into them, wanting them to either admit that she was his, or they go and take a DNA test to prove that she is in fact Ethan's daughter.

"Just so you are aware, two wrongs don't make a right, in fact just look at your parents." Ethan says to Melissa, crossing his arms and giving her a dirty look. She huffed, and looked over at James "I can't hide this anymore, he needs to know the truth, the last thing I want is, for this to get dragged out in court, and for Faith to be stuck in the middle of it."

Ethan choked and gasped, hearing Melissa possibly finally admit that Faith was in fact his daughter "You stole four years of her life away from me, why? Was everything that I did, that bad? I never once laid a hand on you, never raised my voice at you, and the only thing that I'm guilty of, was loving you. Apparently, that wasn't good enough, and then something you knew I wanted the most, you hid from me, for no fucking reason."

"You were a child; she needed an adult father in her life."

Ethan couldn't take it anymore, hearing all what was coming out of her mouth, and started blowing up on her, until he looked over at Faith. She didn't understand what was going on, he closed his mouth, and started walking towards the door.

"You may not want to take this to court, but I will fight for custody. She needs to know who her real dad is, and not someone that pretended to be her father. You know I could have raised her just fine. Don't think for one second that I won't fight, because I will."

Ethan left the house, slamming the door as he left, leaving Antonio inside with Melissa, and James. Antonio pulled out a business card, and handed it over to James. "I guess we'll be in touch. I do however, suggest you figure things out before court, the right judge could rule in Ethan's favor, being that you hid her from him." he says, smirking.

Antonio left the house and got into the car with Ethan. Ethan was leaning his head against the window, nearly in tears. "What the fuck did I ever do in life to deserve to be treated like this? First it was Melissa, then Grace, now it's Melissa again, hiding me from my daughter? FUCK..."

"You didn't do anything, and you don't deserve this at all."

"I'm always being shit on, I ask Harlow for guidance, and what does she do? She has a fucking bird shit on my head... story of my fucking life."
