9- Her best interest
A month had gone by, Harlow was getting weaker by the day and the pain that she has throughout her body had been getting worse. Sadie took Harlow to her doctor's appointment, since Antonio was to be due in court all morning.
After Harlow's screening and her exams, the doctor prescribed her some more medication and a stronger medication for the pain. Dr. Walters explained to Harlow, as well as Sadie, that her bones were extremely frail right now, and to try avoid any activities that could fracture her bones.
Sadie wrote everything down in a notebook, while the doctor was explaining where Harlow is at with her cancer, and what she should be doing at this point. She knew Antonio would be asking questions about it when he got home later, and figured this was the best way to let him know what the doctor said, so she wouldn't forget any of the information that was explained to them.
The doctor also printed off paperwork with his findings, and instructions for what she is supposed to be doing at home. He also provided them with names and phone numbers for hospice care if they were to choose that route.
"Harlow at the stage where you're at, it would be in your best interest to enter hospice. All they will do is help for you to stay comfortable, they will also help you with your medical care and with your pain management.... now, I'm not saying that you must do that, it's just something to think about." Dr. Walters explained to her.
"Thank you, I'll have to talk about it with Antonio." she sighed, she didn't want to hear about entering hospice just yet, and it tore her up inside. She shook his hand, and looked over at her girls who were both sitting next to Sadie, and began to tear up. She sighed and looked at Sadie. "I'm ready to go home."
Once they got home, Harlow went straight upstairs and into her room slamming the door. She didn't want her girls to see her cry, she had been holding her tears back from the doctor's office all the way home, and couldn't hold back anymore. She dropped down on the bed, lying down on her stomach and let it all out, screaming into the bed. "Why me?" she kept asking over and over, while punching her fists down on the bed.
After she calmed herself down, she stood up and walked over to the bottom drawer of her dresser, and grabbed a journal that she had been hiding, she climbed into bed, covered herself with the blankets, and started writing in it.
Sadie had gone upstairs to check on Harlow, she knocked on the door and slightly opened the door, peeking her head in, Harlow grabbed a pillow, and put it over her journal, not wanting her to see it.
"I'm sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if there is anything that I can get for you?"
"No thanks, I'm OK for now."
"OK, let me know if you need anything." she says, before shutting the door, she then heard Harlow call out for her and re-opened the door.
"Did you need something?" Sadie asked, as she stood in the doorway, holding onto the door knob.
"I have a question to ask you." she says, patting the bed for her to sit down.
Sadie felt a little nervous, she wasn't sure what she was going to ask, she didn't think Harlow liked her that much, and was curious as to what she was going to ask her. She walked over to her, sat down on the bed next to her, looked at her, and could see that she had been crying. Harlow looked back at her nodding her head.
"What do you think of my girls?"
Sadie looked at her surprised, and confused by that question "What do I think of them?"
"Yes, I'm curious as to how you feel about them."
"Well... I think they are great kids, they are beautiful, very smart for their age, and I love them as if they were my own children. Why do you ask?"
"I was just curious.... they sure seem to like you. You're like a second mom to them, and I do appreciate everything you do for them. At first, I was nervous with you watching them, but they have clinged to you since the first time I saw them with you." Harlow says with a smile.
"I would never do anything to hurt them, I do hope you know that." Sadie says to her, assuring her. "And I'm glad I got to know them, they're very special... well actually, you all are special to me." Sadie says, smiling.
"Thank you, that's all I wanted to know, you can go now. I'm sure the girls are looking for you anyway." she says quietly.
Sadie left the room wondering what that was all about. She thought it was strange and unusual for her, since Harlow usually ignored her. She checked on the girls, and found them both asleep on the couch, she grabbed a blanket, and laid it over them. She knew they could use a nap and if she tried picking them up, they would wake up. Thinking she could use a nap as well, she sat down on the other couch, covered herself in a blanket, and quickly fell asleep.
Antonio came home from work, and walked into a quiet house, he thought it was odd since normally the kids are always running to greet him when he got home. He walked further into the house, and saw the kids sleeping and noticed Sadie sleeping also. He knew since Harlow wasn't downstairs, that she must have been sleeping as well.
He walked into the kitchen and noticed paperwork from the doctor, as well as Sadie's notes sitting on the breakfast bar. He picked them up, and sat down at the table, looking them over.
He started wiping his forehead as he read each page, his stomach dropped and let out a loud gasp when he got to the hospice paperwork. He stood up, and walked over to Sadie, wanting to wake her up to see what all the paperwork was about, he leaned over the couch, and got next to her ear. "Sadie!" he whispered loudly.
She could feel his hot breath on her, and opened her eyes. Her eyes widened when she saw him inches away from her face, with his eyes staring back at her.
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" he asks quietly, standing back up.
She slowly slid the blanket off her, stood up and followed him into his office. Once they were in his office, he stopped and turned around holding up the papers. She knew he was going to ask her about the papers, and what it all meant.
"What are these hospice papers about?" he asked, demanding that she tell him everything that was said by the doctor.
"Did you look at all the papers?" she questioned. She didn't feel like repeating anything, especially the way he was questioning her.
"I did, but what is this all about?" he asked, flashing the information about hospice care, and pushing the paperwork closer to her.
"Antonio, she's in a lot of pain, and she's very weak. The doctor thinks that it's in her best interest to hire a professional, to help care for her." she says pausing, she walked closer to him and grabbed the paperwork out of his hand. She felt a lump in her throat as she was about to tell him the next thing the doctor told them. "Her cancer is so aggressive, that it has spread everywhere, the way the doctor sounded, it's not good, not good at all." she said sadly.
Antonio stood there in shock, he looked at the papers in her hand, and looked back at Sadie, feeling broken. "You do know what hospice means, don't you?" he asked, feeling as if he was being stabbed in the heart.
Sadie nodded her head, quietly responding back to him "I do."
"This here means the end is near, and I'm not ready for that." he says, walking away from her.
"Harlow didn't take the news well either, she's been up in the bedroom since we got home."
Sadie thought about telling him what Harlow asked her earlier, but thought that it was best to not say anything, at least not right now.
"The doctor did say it was completely up to you and Harlow for the hospice care, but he did say that he highly suggests it, saying it would make life a lot easier for her." she said, as she walked up to him, giving him a hug.
He wrapped his arms around her, and held her tight while resting his chin on the top of her head. At first, she wasn't going to hug him because of the sparks she felt between them recently, but when saw how hurt and broken he was, she knew he could use a hug.
As they were holding each other, Isabella quietly walked into the room, tapping on Sadie's back. "I think mommy needs help; she was just yelling."
"Thank you honey, daddy will go check on her." he tells her. He released his arms rom Sadie and looked her in the eyes. "Thank you, I needed that."
She smiled at him, and nodded her head. "Go see what she wants." she says, pushing on his arm to leave.
Sadie leaned down, and picked Isabella up, hugging her. "Is mommy sick?" Isabella asked, as she rested her head on Sadie's shoulder.
Sadie's heart dropped when she asked her that, not knowing what to say to her. "Yes honey, she isn't feeling the greatest right now, how about I go play you a song on the piano?"
Isabella hopped down, and pulled on Sadie's hand, bringing her to the piano, excited to see and hear her play.
Sadie sat down at the piano, and started playing Ave Maria. Isabella sat next to her, watching her play with a smile. Gabriella came running in the room after she heard music playing and stood next to Sadie, watching her fingers as she played the song.
Antonio was upstairs helping Harlow out with her medication, his heart felt heavy seeing her in so much pain, and wished he could trade spots with her, so she wouldn't have to feel it anymore.
"Antonio..." she said softly. He looked at her and pulled her in his arms, holding her tight and running his fingers through her hair.
"Just keep resting you need it... I'm so sorry you're going through this and that I can't do anything more for you. I pray every day for a miracle, hoping that I could take it away from you." he tells her, pulling back and placing a kiss on her lips.
She pulled away from him, and laid her head back down on the pillow, taking in deep breaths.
"What would you say about all of us going on a family vacation? The girls birthday is next week, and I was thinking maybe we could take them to Walt Disney World, would you like to do that?"
She shrugged her shoulders "I don't know if I could?"
"Come on Harlow, we both know what is about to happen, wouldn't you like to take a family vacation, and see the girls happy? You have to be strong for them too, you're still here and you deserve time away from what's going on here as well."
"I guess you're right, I can try and be strong, and enjoy whatever time I have left, especially with you and our girls." she says quietly.
He leaned to her and kissed her lips "I'll go tell them." he happily says, grinning ear to ear,
As he walked back down the stairs, he heard the piano being played, and recognized the song. He thought that it was being played beautifully, and headed over to the music room to see what was going on. He stood in the doorway of the music room, he was in awe when he saw the girls sitting next to Sadie, while she played the piano.
He had no idea she knew how to play piano, and was flabbergasted. He started to walk in, and the girls turned around when they heard him behind them, clearing his throat. Sadie stopped playing, and turned around.
"Wow, I'm impressed... you never said that you could play the piano." Antonio said, surprised. "You were playing it so elegantly, it's also one of my favorite songs to play."
"Thank you, I've been playing piano since I was five years old. Hope you don't mind, I wanted to play them a song."
"No, I don't mind at all, you can play whenever you feel like it." he said thrilled, hoping to hear her play another song.
"I actually came down to let you all know, that I'm going to bring everyone on a vacation, the girls' birthday is next week, and Harlow could use a break away from everything, including me." He looked at the girls with a smile, and chuckled as they began jumping up and down. He looked back over at Sadie, and smiled. "Would you mind joining us? You also deserve a break from here."
